Very true, though Santana will be 35 in 2018 and 36 in 2019 - pitching 400 innings over those two years would not be unprecedented, but it's still a mark of a pretty good pitcher. Those options vesting seems unlikely, but if Santana can pitch effectively enough to get that many innings, he's earned that extra $14MM.

Yep. If Santana reaches those milestones, he's almost surely worth the paycheck so the option is entirely irrelevant IMO.
