So Long Bill Buckner

Twins Video

blog-0995423001559050259.jpgA nice note from CNN:

Say the name Bill Buckner, and what do you think of? Probably a baseball rolling under his glove and through his legs. And that's just not fair. Buckner, who died yesterday at age 69, was an elite hitter, winning a batting title with the Chicago Cubs in 1980 (hitting .324), and he was an All-Star in 1981. He managed to hang around the big leagues for 22 years, an accomplishment in itself. But he'll always be associated with that fielding error in the 1986 World Series that led to the Boston Red Sox losing Game 6 to the New York Mets.

Most people seem to think that if he had fielded that ball cleanly the Red Sox would have won that game and its just not true.    If he fields that ball cleanly they go into extra innings with Mets having home field and momentum.    I watched that whole game intently and was pulling for the Sox but as soon as the game was tied late I thought the Mets were huge favorites to win that game even without Buckner's error.   So its possible the error cost the Series but probably not.    Certainly he didn't deserve all the backlash.

He makes the play=extra innings.  Who knows what happens then?  They had an opportunity in Game 7...guy was a great ball player for many many years.  66th on MLB all time hit list according to baseball-reference...guy had to move his family to Idaho...at the end of the day it is a game/entertainment...not good what he went through after that...RIP Buck.
