Friedman encountered a very similar situation 6 years ago when he traded Kemp for Grandal. Similarly it was leaked medicals about Kemp’s hips that put the trade on hold for 8 days. The Padres wanted more. Friedman said no. The trade closed without the Dodgers adding to the previously agreed deal. I don’t know why the Sox think this would end any differently. For better or worse (I think better) Friedman has in mind a deal and doesn’t cross that line at any cost. Some Dodger fans harp on his process as costing the Dodgers for a player that matters. But they also know he won’t budge. The real question is how the Dodgers/Sox (maybe Twins) construct a new deal that doesn’t cross said line but also let’s the Sox save face.

Right?!? Look, it was a good deal for the Dodgers, better than I was anticipating. But my general rule in life is a deal is a deal. Dodgers don’t get back some compensation for Yonder Alvarez Ex post facto. Everything balances out over time. But we’ve seen a breakdown in good faith conduct across baseball and it’s troubling.

Here’s what’s funny reading the Dodger boards all day, they completely agree. There are 2 main themes. 1. F the Red Sox 2. Graterol-Maeda should be done as a stand-alone if the Red Sox bail on the deal. If you’ve watched the Dodgers fail in the playoffs oh I don’t know, the last 7 years you’d know that the bullpen falls a close second to trash cans as culprit. The Dodgers have plenty of starting pitching. Maeda would be a great in the bullpen but his contract incentivizes starts/innings. Graterol’s sinker is NASTY and he’d plug a hole in the same way Maeda will the Twins rotation. So a deal really works.

I disagree. Bowie Kuhn, while imperfect was absolutely right to intervene in Charlie O's trades. The same should be done here, except to push the trades through. There is precedent.

My username should make clear where my allegiance resides. Quite the mess this has become. The Dodgers shouldn't be required to add the deal. The Twins shouldn't add to the deal. Boston has got to complete this deal as is...and now. The way Graterol's name has been sullied is just unfair. This could seriously affect his career earnings down the road. About 10 players don't know what the hell they're doing next week. After seeing what Manfred did in the Astros scandal it's clear the man lacks cajones but he's got to do something good for the league. Right now it's a free for all, with teams doing as they please without regard for propriety.

Twins are 3rd team in Betts trade
DodgerFan1234 replied to Andrew610i3's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Dodgers fan here. Twins are going to love Maeda. I read in this thread that he's lost his spot in the rotation the last 2 years. Not true. His stuff plays up as a bullpen piece in the playoffs for the Dodgers but that mostly has to do with the Dodgers having other options that can't relieve, like Kershaw and Buehler. But he's still a solid rotation piece and the perfect fit for a small/mid market team where he's only guaranteed 3MM/year base with bonuses based on performance up to 12MM/year. Twins give up a power arm but probably a solid deal overall for both (all 3) sides. -
REPORT: Twins Lose JT Chargois On Waivers
DodgerFan1234 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The only thing I can think of from the Twins FO is they figured most 40-man rosters were filled the first few days of spring training and could sneak Chargois through. It’s not the worst idea. Guys who can pump it hard but fail to stay healthy are hardly a rare commodity. From the Dodgers perspective, the FO has a habit of throwing a bunch of pitchers with health issues against a wall and seeing what sticks. Morrow is a perfect example last year. Talk about a guy who couldn’t stay healthy but who could pump it up there much the same as Chargois. Same could be said of Hill and Wood before him. Blanton as well. But it hasn’t always worked out. Kazmir, McCarthy, and Brett Anderson were quite costly mistakes with known health issues. The Dodgers figure that if they get 5 pitchers with 80-level talent that can only stay healthy 20% of the time, then they have 1 80-level player in the end -

Passan: Dodgers Nearing Deal for Forsythe

Assuming Dave's source accurate, that the Dodgers had already agreed to give up prospects 33 & 49, was not getting prospect 82 really worth passing up on two top-50 prospects? I guess I'm at a loss on that one. I like Willie Calhoun's bat a lot (hate his glove a lot) but I would not let him get in the way of the other two if I was the Twins. -

Morosi writing a post-script says Twins asked for JDL, Alvarez, Calhoun. To be completely accurate Morosi doesn't say that the first two pieces were agreed upon and Calhoun being the 3rd. He also doesn't give a time reference to that request. This neither enforces nor refutes the rumors swirled on these pages. Just what Morosi heard after the fact and I share it with you. From DodgerLand, I think that offer is rediculous. Dodgers got a player as good as Dozier by wRC+ for 1/3 that asking price. -

The one thing I haven't read on this (or other threads) is what you guys and gals think this does for F/L when negotiating with other teams. There's going to be a set of GM's that probably think DeLeon (plus something, what is anybody's guess) should have gotten a deal done. Others probably don't value DeLeon+ as much. But 28 other teams saw a perfect fit drag on for months. No matter which side of the DeLeon/Dozier trade you come out on I have to think some GM's will wonder whether they are going to be able to get a deal done with the Twins with a gun against the head like at the trading deadline. "And if so, why waste my time with the Twins?" Just something to think about. -

I hope Dave is right. This Yadier Alvarez kid the Dodgers just re-aquired with Forsythe in exchange for not doing the Dozier deal looks pretty special . . Well, it's not spin if that's what actually happened. My wife asked me what I thought about the trade. I told her that I was fine with it because JDL was a good (not great) prospect and with the rumor of the more being Alvarez, Foresythe was more than fine. If you go by wRC, Dodgers got a steal. -

Well said. Let me also that that some on this board like to trash DeLeon and his upside. Some have said that there's got to be something wrong with JDL if the Dodgers were so eager to dump him. Not so. Dodgers had an obvious need at 2B and look at the acquiring team, the Rays. I would argue that they've been one of the best teams at evaluating pitching talent over the last 10 years. Price, Archer, Garza (ouch), etc. I know trashing JDL makes you feel better but I wish nothing but the best for the kid. And here's to him pitching CGS's against the Twins over the next 6 years -

FWIW, Chris Camello (a guy that's actually broken real Dodger transactions this offseason) is saying that the failed Dodger-Twins trade was actually a 3-way involving Seattle and Alex Wood going for the prospect that would have been the 2nd big piece going to MIN. That deal obviously never happened, nor did the Dozier trade. -

The general consensus on the Dodger forums is, and I'm quoting a couple of people "eat it Twins!" (The FO, not the fans). IMO, the Twins are taking a HUGE gamble and I see a lot more downside than upside for the FO. Good luck, Twins fans.
