Should they retroactively award contracts to those more deserving players? Mauer was on an absolute tear the years before his contract extension and in all honesty the Twins got the hometown discount to keep him. The Twins had to shell out to keep an MVP level, beloved player. It hasn't worked out perfectly, but we still have a first baseman playing excellent defense, with a high OBP and a solid batting average.

He's cheap, relatively young, and has a few positive aspects to his game. As others have said there is no real market for him and he isn't taking a spot from somebody. Until Buxton stops being bounced between levels we could use a solid, on-base producing, fourth outfielder.

The odds have to be low for Suzuki being as offensively capable next year and we know his defensive range. Centeno can potentially be a temporary stopgap until some of these younger guys get their shot. It's a tough market, there is a dearth of catching talent across the league.

If they want to see what Polanco can accomplish I don't see how they can keep Plouffe. Shipping out Grossman might be premature yet, he is still reliable, gets on base, and is more valuable than Santana in the OF. We saw already this year the overconfidence with the outfield and how that blew up in their face in April/May.

In a lost season there is no point to this. Buxton has crushed AAA pitching already this year, another month won't serve much of a purpose. Facing AAA pitching won't magically fix his plate struggles. We already know Santana gives below average offense and defense; Buxton at his absolute worst is a high caliber defender. I can't say anything about Plouffe yet, if they start benching Polanco or Sano to give him worthless at-bats then there is a problem.
