  1. Trying to tie the LGBT debate to my baseball team yesterday was frustrating, but his reporting of this might be unforgivable.
  2. I don't like the idea that he shouldn't be able to ask a well constructed somewhat relevant question either. However these kinds of introductory press conferences seem to have had an unwritten rule where the gag-worthy discussions were about love and togetherness since Ivan Drago roid raged in Rocky IV. I'm fine with the game changing, and no one should have to clear their questions with the powers that be like the shams we see at a presidential debate. However since the Twins surely thought the old rules were in effect, fair warning of tough questions may have been kind. Torii was still an idiot either way.
  3. A velocity uptick in a contract year? Who would have heard of such a thing! Yuk. Please no. Surely the team can find a better road block for Meyer and May than a 37-year-old pitching in one of the NL's most pitcher friendly parks last year.
  4. Torii's playing in the wrong era. He would have had a shot in the late 70's through early 90's as his counting stats look or will look an awful lot like Jim Rice, Andre Dawson and future Veteran Commitee nominees like Dale Murphy, Steve Garvey and Harold Baines. His 9 Gold Gloves would have carried a ton more weight back then as well. The advanced stats still paint him as a very good player, but they aren't as kind as the counting stats, advanced metrics are used quite a bit for judging players now, they're why Blyleven got in. The one thing Hunter has going for him is that the BBWA votes on HOF players, and Torii has been a media darling for a long time. Well until yesterday.
  5. Whatever Berardino's intent, I'm guessing the Twins aren't thrilled that their beat reporter decided to tie LGBT discussions to the team. They'll probably be answering somewhat politically charged questions for the foreseeable future now. Not that I normally have a problem with the beat reporters straying from the requested puppies and rainbows theme. I wish it had been a fair fight though, Berardino should have given the team the heads up that he wouldn't be playing softball today.
  6. Hunter was clearly wrong, I don't like his political views (and thinking LGBT rights should even be subject to debat offends me). However, in the past it has occured to me just how fast I'd lose my $#%* if I happened to get grilled by a Fox News employee on air. I wouldn't last long. Though I also don't get paid $10.5 million to keep my cool. I might hold it together. Might.
  7. I hope so. We'll probably get a similar statement from Hunter too, and as skeptical as I am, I'd guess on some level both mean it. This circus will be entertaining for all of about a week. Then we need to move on, this crap better not carry over into the season.
  8. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the direction journalism has taken. But had the question even come from a homer like La Velle, there probably would be more shock and less outrage.
  9. We don't, but Berardino won't be holding any press conferences for us to grill him about it.
  10. I really don't disagree with this at all. Everyone involved probably expeted the traditional fluffy introductory news conference. I'm fine with changing the expectations for these things, though it might have been more of a fair fight had the subject been notified of the updated unwritten rules. Still, Berardino's motives appear to be of the selfish variaty. He got burned reporting that Hunter was most interested in signing with a contender, his recent Tweets about Hunter's defense seem to indicate Berardino wasn't a fan of bringing him back and clearly he doesn't agree with Hunter's political views (good for him). All that points to him being an instigator for the purpose of burning a guy in embarassing fashion. The question would have appeared to be more impartial had it come from someone, well who appeared to be more impartial.
  11. I think a good rule of thumb is, if the title of the thread has the word "prick" in it, all bets are off as to where the beast will head.
  12. And presumably the team wouldn't need a ten second delay for their news conferences.
  13. Probably not, but I think that really has more to do with the quality of the available OF than it does with the split among us TD posters. Perhaps Alex Rios would have been the compromise that would have brought us together, I haven't heard too much complaining about him even though everyone would be counting on bounce back offensive and defensive production from him.
  14. I don't think I've heard the Twins or Twins pitchers blame the defense, which is noble. Still, if good defenders make the pitchers look better, or good pitchers make defenders look better are the options, I think you win more with the later. Good on both ends is ideal, but I think you fix the pitching first, as it seems more important.
  15. Ideologically I'm on (the presumed) side of Berardino. It doesn't change the fact that by tossing that grenade at what was assumed to be a run-of-the-mill cushy introduction press conference, he was looking to grab the headlines himself. I haven't been able to read all the reactions, but is anyone rally defending Hunter? I would assume those that are ripping Berardino simply assume everyone already agrees Hunter was a complete moron for calling him a prick while cameras were rolling.
  16. Ha, this so fits the theme of Minnesota sports right now! What a freaking mess. Hunter is probably right about Berardino, who was probably still a little stung from the fact that he'd been reporting Hunter was planning to sign with a contender. But what the hell was Hunter thinking?! Good lord, embarassing. But Deadspin is hardly legitimate. They get scoops and some are actaually newsworthy, but it's all sensationalized, there is no objectionality about them. Did no one notice their headline: Anti-Gay Bigot Torii Hunter Calls Reporter "Prick" Four Times Um, yeah, that's quality journalism right there.
  17. I agree, the pitchers themselves likely are not able to change. That doesn't change the fact that the finding plus outfielders (and infielders) because the pitchers put too many balls in play isn't fixing the problem, it's just putting a band aid on it. If the team wants to make the pitchers look better, sure, you can get better fielders, but the team isn't going to contend until the actual pitching problem is fixed. We're basically just arguing if Torii Hunter is an adaquate turniquet. To win, they need to do more than simply try to stop the bleeding.
  18. Yeah, which is on par with every other Twins mid-season trade lately.
  19. Ha, thanks for the disclaimer Brock.
  20. My take on the comment was perhaps the pitchers should find the catcher's glove more often instead of making the outfielders get all of their outs for them.
  21. Agreed. This is the best discussion we've had since the trade deadline!
  22. I don't think we should get too enamoured with Vargas' small sample size. I have high hopes for him, but there was a reason Arcia was rated a top Twins prospect since he was a teenager and Vargas was not. Most of Arcia's problems seem to stem from stubborness and mental lapses. I'd really like to see what happens with another year of maturaty and a manager that seems a lot less likely to put up with nonsense.
  23. I agree with number 3 but only in so far as I'm not sure which direction the club is aiming for here. I wanted to go younger. However, how do we know that they aren't using advanced data? Perhaps they are using information not found on Fangraphs or any other fan accessable baseball site. All things being equal, he's a bad outfielder, but all things are not equal, namely Comerica Park and Target Field are not equal, not even close. Perhaps the Twins are thinking the now accepted defensive measurements don't work when comparing their stadium to stadium X, and perhaps they have forumals that adjust for range needed in TF compared to stadium X. We don't know Hunter's affect on the defense. I know many want to go by the book, but I find it highly unlikely that he's not an upgrade over Willingham and Arcia. And the fact that any data would suggest it, probably is good reason not to trust it. As for #2, I don't know what Law is on, but Hunter hasn't been barely better than a replacement level player since his early days for the Twins. Perhaps he will be in 2015, but he wasn't in 2014 or any time in the previous decade. Also, while it's likely he was the Twins top target, for all we know Rios, or any other OF already told them no, or that they are waiting until February to sign. The pickings were slim, I'm not sure how high you could really aim with this group.
  24. True, but the same can usually be said about 39-year-old outfielders. I don't think he'll hit as well as he did protected by that Tigers lineup. On the other hand, I think there's a pretty good chance that he'll hit better than any other free agent bat the Twins could/would bring in. Rios was my choice if they were going to get a free agent OF, but if you have to wait for him, you might get nothing at all.
