    With the long arms creating leverage it would seem like the tall pitchers would fall into the Randy Johnson/Alex Meyer high velocity but wild category, but then you have the Chris Youngs, Mark Hendricksons and Doug Fisters who seemingly defy physics and don't throw hard and do have good command. Slegers definately looks like the Chris Young type.

    I was and still would be interested if the Cardinals would listen on Michael Wacha. He had a poor year last year and his numbers mid-June also weren't pretty, but he's got good velocity and lots of pitches. He's also still young and controllable. ?(Un)fortunately? He's pitched much better the last month so he might be harder to buy low-ish on.

    I guess I'm in the minority, but with his record of poor strikeout ability, poor walk rate, poor velocity, an NL only starter going from the worst division in baseball to the AL, I'd actually trust Gibson and Santiago more. And I don't trust them at all. For what it's worth, I've always had an aversion to soft tossing lefties who don't miss bats, not just Garcia. I've also had a strong aversion to NL only starters for quite awhile now. Those wells have been poisoned for me.

    I suppose my disagreement is with the pitcher himself and not the actual move. They can make a move or two if they want, that's fine by me. It's just that to me Garcia looks like a guy who half the board will be screaming to DFA after a month and the other half will be screaming about losing Prospect X for nothing. If others think Garcia looks like an honest attempt at improving the club I understand why missing out on this trade is frustrating.

    But trading for Jaime Garcia isn't aggressive, he's not a very good pitcher. He would be more half measures; I'm so tired of these kinds of putzy moves which are more PR than substance. If they aren't going to make serious moves to contend this year, I don't want them to trade for a pig, put makeup on it and try to sell that as an honest to goodness attempt to win.

    Maybe, but it seemed to me this site has been deriding Santiago since his first start in a Twins uniform.

    Is a soft tosser with an increasing walk issue going to be average in the AL though? He looks like the kind of guy who will be a liability in short order. I don't have an issue losing Burdi, I just think the odds of this guy actually patching a hole are quite slim. Isn't this basically replacing Hector Santiago with a softer tossing Hector Santiago who's only pitched in the NL.

    After nearly every sports surgery in all of mankind's history, the team and player call the procedure "a success!!!". I'd guess sometimes they are exaggerating.

    He could be pitching hurt. What we learned after the Padres shady dealings last year, I believe any issues or discomforts a player mentions to the trainer must be added to his medical file.

    2nd tier sounds generous. He looks an awful lot like Hector Santiago to me.

    Sounds like I might be alone, but I'm not expecting a soft tossing career NL'er to do well in a mid season trade to the AL. Particularly one who is barely average when he's at his best and has a walk rate trending in the wrong direction.

    This won't be popular, but the Rays released Danny Farguhar, I'm intregued by him. He's had control issues that range from effectively wild to unusable but when he's on he misses a lot of bats and he's controllable until 2021. With the strikeout potential and controllability he looks like a great lotto ticket.

    To me it makes little sense to have guys drafted out of the SEC, ACC or other power conferences to ever go to rookie leagues except for a wood bat tune up, and even then I don't see the issue with adjusting to wood bats in A ball. I'd also bet lots of GMs feel the same. But most organizational players don't get demotions, they get released and I'd also guess that the rookie leagues are much more likely to be filled with players who appear certain to washout. Meaning there's rosters to fill in the rookie leagues and the higher up you go, the better players you have to cut loose. There probably are teams (maybe this one) that are conservative or hesitant or coddle guys or whatever way we like to describe it. But most teams still do it and we don't view all teams in these terms. So I'd guess it's systematic. Though I'm usually for trying something new.

    And the fact that a 2016 2nd round draft pick doesn't have "priority" in the Appy League really speaks volumes about how many exciting SS capable prospects there are in the system.

    I'm willing to compromise for the Kernels. Rooker goes to Ft. Myers, but CR gets a consolation prize in Lewis

    As far as I know they haven't made any trades. I wouldn't expect a ton in season. As far as the pitchers they add on minor league deals, every club does that. I was never expecting that method of acquiring players to be a big part of putting a team together. Like I said, I'll give them the year to evaluate; come snowfall they better be making the trades and free agent signings needed to put together a contender.

    It hasn't but I understand why his track record is appealing to others. I admitted I've been wrong predicting his demise every year but I still don't care much for crafty lefties; not just him.

    Ha, it is really difficult to determine if this is a tongue-in-cheek pot-shot at the Twins or not.

    As far as the AAA scouting skills, is there someone you're referring to? Or do you just mean the Breslow/Rucinsky/Tepesch/Wilk stuff? Yeah, none of that was impressive. I'm not sure it was supposed to be though; I sure hope not. I always said I'll give them the first year free to evaluate. After that I'm going to expect to be wowed by their moves because I'm not settling for half measures made to desperately try for a .500 record and one-and-done playoff appearances.

    I wasn't a fan of Quintana last year either when his name was mentioned as a trade target for teams. I've never been a believer. Perhaps it was always the fact that he was a scrap heap pick up who had been DFA'd by two different teams despite the fact that the teams had never even needed to use an option on him. These kind of guys always seemed to be a flash in the pan who's bubble soon burst. I always thought he was a smoke-and-mirrors lefty though I'll readily admit that for the previous five years my lack of faith was in no way supported by his results. He clearly proved me wrong every year. But he's still a 2 1/2 pitch pitcher with sudden control issues. I'll never trust him.     I'd like to think the new front office has their teams looking for the undervalued guys. I'd rather look for the upside guys you can buy low on. Get our own Arrieta, or Straily or Scherzer (2009) or Kulber or Robbie Ray. Except for the elite arms, trading for good-not-great pitchers rarely seems to payoff for the buyers. I don't think many of these guys available are elite.

    Perhaps, but as we saw with the Dozier situation last winter, demand is more important. It'll probably always be relatively high for pitchers though I concede.

    He hasn't been nearly as good this year and he's all of a sudden developed an issue with walks when his success has always been based almost exclusively on good control. Also, he's all but a two-pitch pitcher now as he rarely uses his change-up. I mean if you can get him based on the value of his numbers this year, sure, I'd be interested. I doubt the White Sox would trade him under that pretense though. Also there's the issue of helping the White Sox reload. Yuck.
