    Ottavino has awful control and was a bit of a one year wonder from my view, I didn’t want him. I would have wanted Robertson and Soria on those two-year-deals though.

    There are still 8-10 relievers I’d like and several of the bigger names free agents I had very little interest in. But yeah, at least as far as the pen goes it seems like they’re using last year’s strategy of waiting to see who’s still standing after the music stops and offer those guys below expected contracts, despite the front office implicitly saying that strategy might have been misguided last year. It would be nice if we had some local reporters who could get us some insight or at least educated speculation as to why this is happening again so the fans could at least understand what we’re dealing with.

    Yeah, metropolitan large market coastal cities. They look down on us too. Neither of you two live here, but did you? What’s the reaction of at least 50% of the people you tell that you’re from Minnesota? I’m not trying to be a jerk but surely everyone has experienced the “You’re from where?!” reaction when traveling. Why would pro athletes be any different? It’s an obstacle that can be overcome, but it’s not imaginary.

    That was my original and resentful take, but after just spending a week in Florida, I’m once again reminded how everyone south of here makes our area the butt of the joke. Everyone is incredulous that we simpletons would subject ourselves to such inhabitable environments. It would take an act of God, not money, to talk a young Floridian man into committing his formative years to live in Siberia.

    Yeah, I bet 1 year for $30-35M beats the Sox offer. But I still bet he gets 10 years $30M plus, and I’d bet he’d have little interest in spending the next decade in Minnesota. For all the grief I’ve given Terry Ryan, I think his frustration toward the end of his career was legit when he was on MLB Network and said the Twins couldn’t even give their money away to attract free agents.

    I’m all for the Twins spending more then they have, but I wish everyone would stop assuming Cleveland is starting to backslide. They have one of the best rotations in the league and two of the game’s best young hitters. I think they are closer to the Red Sox and Astros than they are to the Twins. My money would be on 2018 being an outlier, I think rveryone’s in for disappointment if they assume the AL Central will be taken with 90 wins.

    Prediction, this quote will be rebutted more than any other post in this thread! But unless Herrera could convince me that he could get his K/9 back over 9.0, I agree. I want guys who miss bats in the pen.

    Allen wasn't very good last year, but I'd still be interested. Proven is kind of a subjective word in this case, but of the guys most people would think of as "proven" Familia, Robertson and Soria were the only relievers who I am disappointed we didn't/couldn't get. Those are the big names that as far as I can tell were still productive last year, are still piling up strikeouts and apparently at full health. Not that I don't want other relievers, just that my interest in all the rest vary and may not line up with perceived value. Buy yeah, if Parker is the best we do for the pen this year, I'll be pretty resentful.

    Unexciting but better than most players the Twins have signed after being DFA'd.

    He had a 100% fielding percentage in the outfield the past two years. If we don't dig into his fielding any further past that we could stay satisfied with the idea.

    I wouldn't vote for Bonds or Clemens but my view of the HOF has changed from seeing it as some kind of sacred tiered referendum to just honoring players who sportswriters and former players want to acknowledge, so I'm not going to be upset about who gets in any longer.

    I would condone not adding any sinkerballers, they're not a fit for this team. Nor any team that thinks intentionally putting the ball in play is a bad idea. The free agent starters were brutal this year, I wouldn't have wanted to add one just for the sake of making a move. I don't know, maybe take a chance on Gio Gonzalez or Clay Buchholz if they have any desire to come here. Otherwise, yeah, I don't see any of those free agents making the team any better.

    If this team is still rolling with Sano and Polanco on the left side of the infield, they'd be insane to want anything to do with an expensive sinkerballer who can't miss bats.

    Yeah, local teams are allowed to value players differently than sportswriters in Vermont do. I'd prefer the retired numbers don't get watered down, but I don't think they are at this point. The Twins Hall of Fame has made some selections that make me slightly hesitate.

    I think plenty of teams would take Austin as a third or fourth piece in a deal. Though perhaps not if he has another half season with a 35% K rate. So I’d look to move him now while other teams can still project potential on him.

    I don’t have strong enough feelings about him or Cron to much care. Seems to me Austin or Kepler along with some combination of Gonsalves, Gordon, Polonco, Mejia types would be a nice package of “MLB Ready” players teams are always asking for in trade scenarios. You

    I guess I kind of thought the Padres only made that move for the draft pick and figured there was no downside to seeing if magic happened with Hughes. I mean no downside for them, plenty of downside for Hughes' health, which San Diego has already shown they don't much care about with the shenanigans associated with the Drew Pomeranz trade. Or was that Kimbrel? Or both?

    This team has talked about being creative with the pitching staff and using the 'opener' again, but so far the only useful bullpen arms they have are Rogers and May. At this point, I think Gibson's ability to pitch beyond the 5th inning is still much more valuable than any benefit that Odorizzi can counter with.

    The committees rotate the eras they review and vote upon, it will come back to Kaat's era again. It's possible that Kaat and Oliva might work against each other as far as the voting goes, but fortunately those committees can vote for as many players as they believe in.

    I don't like the available starters at all. If they're going after pitching in the free agent market, I'd rather it all be in the bullpen.

    I think his future is in the bullpen, maybe even as soon as this spring. He throws a lot of different pitches, but none of them are standout. His off speed stuff is basically a curve that he rarely uses because it's not good and a splitter which might be even worse. His four-seamer is pretty decent despite it's low velocity though; a move to the pen could make it better. In the pen maybe he could just concentrate on FB/Slider. If the Twins want to extend him with an eye on his long-term spot being in the pen, that's OK by me. I don't really care for him to be a rotation staple going forward though so if an extension encourages that, I'd pass.

    The Twins didn't retire Blyleven's number until AFTER he got elected into the HOF which always seemed a bit backwards. Kind of like, whelp, I guess we got to do it too. My money is on Johan Santana getting into the HOF with a veteran's committee shortly after he's eligible for their vote, in which case the Twins will feel obligated to retire his number as well.

    I think Rowson and Kepler made a concerted effort to change his swing last year. in 2017 Kepler had a GB-FB split 43%-39% and in 2018 what flip-flopped to 38%-46%. I'd have to think it was all about achieving better launch angles and sending more balls over the wall, it just didn't happen, which is kind of odd considering that Eddie Rosario had nearly the exact same 2017-18 flip-flop of GB-FB percentages and it did seem to work for him until he slowed down at the end of the year. Their near identical reversals makes me think those two were put on the same re-development plan. Certainly Kepler's BABIP hurt him, but obviously the goal in hitting more flyballs is to avoid balls hit in play. I wonder if despite Kepler having a decent hard-hit percentage if he just doesn't have enough strength. Hopefully along with getting Sano in top shape and keeping everyone healthier, the new strength and conditioning team is able to put a few more pounds of muscle on Kepler to help some of those fly balls carry a bit further.
