In defense of Dozier, (I know, I know, this is old school) he does have the best fielding percentage among QUALIFYING 2B, at .993 – with only 5 errors. Pedroia had a better fielding percentage - .995, with only 2 errors, but in only 98 games - compared to 152 games for Dozier. (A batter must have 3.1 plate appearances per team game played (1.86 PA during spring training) to qualify for league leadership in AVG, OBP or SLG). I'd say that should also be true for Gold Glove awards – or base it on innings at the position.

With five on the DL, and 40 others on the list, you have suggested 13 drops. That brings the total down to 32 (45-13) – if all the guys are dropped. With 6 players you suggest needed to be added to the 40-man, that leaves only two spots left to get a starting pitcher, two relief pitchers, a right-handed power bat, and maybe a backup catcher. it seems to me some more trimming needs to be done...

Another reason Mauer was snubbed: Lack of errors. Mauer had two errors all season long - Hosmer had 4, Santana and Moreland 5 each. Mauer was robbed!

Ron Gardenhire hired as Detroit manager
Lee-The-Twins-Fan posted a blog entry in Lee-The-Twins-Fan's Blog
Former Twins skipper Ron Gardenhire has signed a three-year contract to manage the Detroit Tigers, according to MLBTradeRumors. Here is the link. -
I'm not opposed to expansion, but, I would tie it to a reduction of one minor league tier, in A level. I think there's too many players languishing in the minor leagues; it takes a long time for these guys to move through to get to the majors. By eliminating one tier, you reduce expenses for that tier, and you would have fewer marginal players in the minor leagues. It would make all the other levels more competitive, and would allow for the expansion teams to pick up some players off of other teams' minor leagues. I don't think any other major sport has 28, 29 or 30-year-old players reaching the top level. As for alignment, I would hope they keep the AL and NL intact, with the same rules they have now. There needs to be some inter-league play – otherwise the Twins and Brewers would never play. That's a lot of revenue for the clubs. As for the proposal from Tracy Ringolsby, I suspect most of it is conjecture on his part. it could be kind of a trial balloon, to see what the reaction is. I hope the Chicago, New York and LA teams are in separate divisions – otherwise it gives those teams a huge advantage in travel. And I would not want the Twins in the northern division with the Yankees and Red Sox – that's a lot of travel for us.

Article: The Falvey And Levine Machine
Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One thing I believe Falvey and Levine have brought is BETTER analytics. Molitor has commented during the year about how the analytics staff has worked to make the information more concise and more useful. I think that's part of the reason Goin was dropped. It's not just about assembling the data, it's also about how do you present it to the players so they can understand it and put it into practice - like those little cards the OF carry. I presume it's information on how to position yourself against a given hitter with the given pitcher on the mound. I think that has contributed to the improved defense, the improved hitting and the improved pitching. The players still have to be the ones implementing the information, but I believe that's part of the Twins' success. -

Article: The Core Seven?
Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seth – Good story. I would prefer Hildenberger over Mejia. Granted, not a starter, but has been a very valuable reliever. My prediction is, if the Twins do not sign a "closer" this winter, he'll be it next spring. BTW – Twins Daily needs to update its Twins roster and salaries. Several current Twins are not even listed. Article: MIN 6, CHW 4: Polanco Does it All
Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wow – Did anyone expect the Twins to still be in the hunt on Aug. 29? It looks like this team has woken up – with new heroes every night. It's fun to watch them. Let's hope they can continue to win, and overtake Cleveland to win the AL Central!- 47 replies

A Deep Dive Into The Twins 40 Man
Lee-The-Twins-Fan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Good story, but I think the Twins will likely keep Polanco, Escobar and Adrianza. I'm not sure how long the rope is on Polanco; he's not hitting like he should be. He's out of options, so this winter the choices will be to keep him, trade him or drop him. I like Adrianza – I think he's the best SS of the three. But Escobar is more of a true utility guy, who can play 2b, 3b and SS. Of course all of this is contingent on what they do with Dozier, and what they think Gordon will do, and how soon he could be up. As for Diaz, I see him and Blankenhorn battling it out, with the winner working with Sano (either at 1B or 3B), after Mauer is gone, of course. I just don't think they're ready to release him after 2018, but he won't get the big bucks again either. Maybe he'll follow his brother and become a minor league manager. Some day, he'll be managing the Twins, I think. -
Deadline Comes As Twins Time Begins
Lee-The-Twins-Fan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
While I agree that most of the top position players are already at the big league club (except for Gordon), The Twins still have a few pitchers (Romero, Gonsalves and others) who could make an impact - and likely will in the next 15 months. The Twins will have to make a move Tuesday, to get Colon on the 25-man roster. Who will they send down? Who will they remove from the roster? I'm just not sure Colon is better than any of the others on the 25-man roster. More moves are coming when Breslow, Haley, Santiago and Buxton come off the DL. I guess time will tell. As for going after outside pitching, Gray would be my top choice. -
Twins Searching Out A Bat?
Lee-The-Twins-Fan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
I think so too – but it won't happen. Management won't acquire a player by giving up prospects - unless the player can help in the future as well. Bautista is on a one-year deal. It just won't happen. -
Twins Starting Depth To Be Tested
Lee-The-Twins-Fan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
I disagree. There is light at the end of the tunnel – and it's Stephen Gonsalves, Fernando Romero, and Felix Jorge. Of course, in reality, that tunnel has no discernible end. Hopefully, there are kids that will be born in 20 years who will be pitching for the Minnesota Twins someday... And maybe their grandkids on a later someday... Yes, the Twins may be able to sign two really good starting pitchers this summer, but I'm not convinced that will solve or even reduce the problem. Gonsalves, Romero and Jorge – and others at AA right now, don't look like the light at the end of the tunnel; nearly all of the starters have more than a 4 ERA at AA. They're not ready yet. Aaron Siegers and/or David Hurlburt may be part of the short term solution, at AAA. Ultimately, the draft may be the best help for a medium-term solution Only time will tell. Personally, I'd send Gibson back down, and give Justin Haley, Tyler Duffey and/or Adam Wilk a shot at starting again. They're all on the 25-man roster, and they all have experience starting. Duffey seems to be doing very well this year. The Twins could try a 4.5 man rotation – using all four current starters plus using one of the three, say Duffey, as a spot-starter - just when needed. It gives guys like Santana and Berrios more starts than a traditional 5-man rotation. And it would get them through this season. Just an idea. Start stretching one of them out... -
Gordon Commanding Spotlight Among Twins Prospects
Lee-The-Twins-Fan commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
I was at Chattanooga for four games (May 5-7, with a double-header) and Gordon is the real deal. He played very well, and appeared to have no problem at SS. -
Right now, Berrios is pitching behind Santana and ahead of Santiago and Hughes in the rotation. One could argue that he is the team's number 2 pitcher – in more ways than one. I hope Santiago and Hughes get back on track. It's hard to get anywhere in the playoffs with just two decent pitchers. (Yeah, I'm thinking playoffs. I know there's a lot of baseball to be played yet, but hey – the Twins are in first place!)

Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Justin Haley will be just fine. His 5.79 ERA may be second-highest on the team, but his 0.86 WHIP is still impressive for a long-man.- 75 replies

Article: Five Takeaways From A Fun First Week
Lee-The-Twins-Fan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Here's your stat for the first week of play: The Twins' MEDIAN (a median is the middle number of a list of numbers – it is not the average of those numbers) ERA is 0.69, by Ervin Santana. They have six pitchers with 0.00 ERAs, and six pitchers with ERAs higher than Santana. Only three of 13 pitchers have ERAs above 5.00. Good pitching.- 75 replies

So when was the last time the Twins had a better record than the NY Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, the San Francisco Giants and the Chicago Cubs??? Relish it while we can.

Is it foolish of me to think they are just keeping Danny Santana around until Adrianza is healthy? If Mauer is playing nearly every game at 1B, he's going to get injured. That's when they'll make a move and call up Park. If park and Adrianza are up with the Twins, and I hope they are soon, the offense will click. We need the pitching to click too.

I really hope Adrianza feels better later this week, an the Twins say Bye-Bye to Danny Santana, rather than have him on the opening dat roster. And I hope you're wrong and its' Mejia instead of Duffey getting the call to the rotation. Don't get me wrong - I really like Duffey, but I'm not sure he's ready to start. If Mejia starts and Duffey is in the pen, they wouldn't have to call up Wimmers yet.

I disagree with the word "rarely." Maybe "infrequently." would be better. i know most players don't think bunt, but in some cases it can be a very effective tool. If the corner infielders are playing back to avoid the extra-base hit, depending on who's following, a bunt for a base hit down the line could be very effective. The best true hitters IMHO make use of at least the threat of a bunt, so as to draw corner infielders in so they can hit hit the ball over their head. It's all about using the whole field – not only horizontally, but distance-wise as well.
