He runs the transitions, he drives the content, and he tells all the jokes! North Dakota fans, unite! In addition to our North Dakotan flare, we talk about the ongoing Twins manager search, what it means that no one will go to games in 2015 at Target Field, and way too much about Aaron Hicks. Eric also has a moment of clarity talking about beer that changes his life, and of course, beer, baseball, and the news. 93 minutes of blues and baseball. Source
2. Chics do, in fact, dig the long ball. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CDMQtwIwAw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DqLECMCargd8&ei=C0NLVI7INMTJgwTkzIDwBQ&usg=AFQjCNFasM__rzo8XE8hsSkT6IXFzLDk8g&bvm=bv.77880786,d.eXY
3. I really enjoyed your postseason review series. Maybe we'll see an first half review of the same next year around the ASG? Maybe? Please?
4. man I love player interviews. This one was excellent. If you guys havent gotten onto the new Twins podcast, Talking Twins, they had Cole DeVries on a couple weeks ago, great interview. Keep it coming fellas.
5. He's a Paul. I'm a Paul. Hire him, Hire me. I don't care, just hire somebody already! jeesh!
6. I'm a big Nikko fan, and while I don't think he would be claimed in the rule-5 draft if left unprotected, I think there will be room to add him to the 40-man, and the Twins should do so rather than risk losing him, even if that risk is small. I really think he can stick at the MLB level with another season or 2 of MiLB experience. Of course, this is pure conjecture, based soley on what I've read, a large portion of that by Seth.
7. My thoughts on Joe Maddon coming to the Twins: Bahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahaha bahhhhhahahahahahahahaha. Never happening. bahahahahahahahaha
8. You can download the new Talk to Contact (@TalkToContact) episode via iTunes or by clicking here, and if you want to add the show to your non-iTunes podcast player, this is the RSS Feed. The Royals and the Giants are playing for baseball's biggest prize and we're all sitting around talking about Paul Molitor, Torey Lovullo and Doug Mientkiewicz and how to build a coaching staff when your new manager has never been the skipper in the big leagues. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JcIauocHqno/VEo12aLmSMI/AAAAAAAAJSA/60UAABTITFg/s1600/maulpolitor.jpeg We also revisited the Twins payroll situation with half of our team back from a week long hiatus. Down on the Pond we talked all about Eddie Rosario and the differences between what he's doing in the Arizona Fall League this autumn and what he did all year long in the Minor Leagues. Of course we finish with beer, baseball, and the news. 65 minutes of postseason fun. Thanks for listening and enjoy the show. If you enjoy our podcast, please tell your friends about us and take a couple extra minutes and rate and review us on iTunes. Ratings and reviews are the bubble gum wadded up in Paul Molitor's cheek.
9. Hey Ricky you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Ricky. Let's hope Ricky Nolasco turns into Rick Vaughan, aka Wild Thing, and becomes the most dominate closer in Twins history, complete with the lines shaved into the side of his head and the black framed hipster glasses. MAJOR LEAGUE!
10. Great look at the depth of 1B in the system. here's a specific question for our current and near-future 1B all-star, Joe Mauer. Should the Twins bat him in the leadoff spot? Maybe move Sandana, who has trouble walking, down to 6/7 in the order, along with guys like Hicks and Escobar. I'd love to see Mauer/Dozier/Vargas/Arcia/Plouffe/Santana/Escobar/Schafer/Hicks, something like that. Anyways, let's hope Joe can find his swing again, and continue to be his usual .400 OBP guy with doubles power. That will play anywhere in the lineup, really, roster construction doesn't change too much either way.
11. Dave, can I call you Dave?, what are you most concerned about going into this winter? What exactly do you, as the team president, even do? Were you behind that fantastic failure of a PR move about comparing the Twins to different types of cars? Where do those ideas come from? Who chooses the give-aways for games? Is there a suggestion box for such things? I'd love to see more gnomes. Now that Gardy's gone, I think a Perkins gnome, or a Dozier Gnome would be great addtions to my garden. I'd love to have a whole roster of Twins gnomes running around my property creating chaos.
12. I love that someone is addressing the bullpen issues, which I think have been a bit misrepresented by the fanbase. Everyone kept saying how we have an above average bullpen, but this last season, that wasn't the case. Yes, they may have been over exposed as the season wound down, but most guys were right in line with recent usage over the past several years. bullpens are ficle. It's hard to predict who will be awesome from year to year, and even harder to trust free agent acquisitions. Look at the Tigers and Dodgers for a case study in bullpen construction. It's tough. Luckily the Twins have some great assets moving up through their system. Hard throwers with control and legit out pitches. The bullpen could once again become the real strength of this team.
13. or splitting the content to create a larger revenue stream. more handbooms, more money. more money, more problems. That's what biggie said. Or maybe it was someone else. Mo money, mo problems.
14. http://assets.podomatic.net/ts/19/ad/da/paulpleiss/1400x1400_10022097.jpgDarren Wolfson returns to Talk to Contact to update us on the Twins' managerial search, and he shares with us some insight on Paul Molitor and more. Just Paul and Eric on the podcast this week, a throwback to the days before Cody and Jay joined the team, and the brothers spent time talking about the Twins payroll, their indifference to the winter free agency period, and of course, beer, baseball, and the news. Thanks for listening! Source
15. What can I say about Phil that hasn't been said here and splattered all across this site already? Phil was a beast in 2014.
16. Does the continually deepining pool of managerial candidates indicate that the Twins are not or have not been wowed by any of the guys who have already interviewed? Or are the Twins simply trying to do their due dilligence? Should we imply that the Twins internal candidates, especially Molitor or Doggie Fresh are no longer the leaders in the club house?
17. Let's not get into the semantics of OBP and what is does and does not measure. It means different things depending on what you're trying to quantify. You're both right. It measures how often a guy didn't make an out. But OBP can feel a bit empty when you're looking at OBP and thinking about how that translates to moving guys around base. Obvi a .340 OBP guy who gets more hits is more valuable than a .340 OBP guy who takes all walks. But the big take away here is that if you can sustain a .340 OBP, that's solid offensive value.
18. All you have to do is get to the post-season, then it's a bit of a crap-shoot. Anything can, and does, happen. This has been one heck of a fun post-season. Can you imagine how much fun it would be to be having this run for the Twins? WOWSERS! It would be awesome to be in this same position as Twins fans in the next two-five years. So much potential.
19. Bravo for Margaritas, that's something I say every time I saddle up to the bar at my local Mexican restaurant and have a salty delicious 'rita on the rocks.
20. Aaron Hicks is no longer the CF of the future. A guy named Byron Buxton was drafted and apparently knows a thing or two about playing baseball, both on offense and defense. But Aaron Hicks very well may be the CF for 2015. I like what Ashbury John has said, that Terry Ryan needs to make sure to have a back-up plan in place for Aaron Hicks, in case he fails. Maybe SanDana is that piece. A lot will depend on where Danny is going to play next year. I think that Hicks and Santana are somewhat tied to each other, and that the new manager will play a big roll in deciding how to handle the two of them. So as much as I want to scream that Hicks will figure it out and he needs MLB reps, I think we need to see who the new manager is, and see what his past says about what his future may bring. That being said, Aaron Hicks, after Trevor May, is my breakout candidate for 2015.
21. Trevor May seems like a likely candidate for great success in 2015. What does great success mean? Well, if you want me to use pitcher wins, I'll say he can get 15, 15 on this ball club, yes. He's got the stuff, he just needs to find that mental toughness, stay within himself and don't let the game get away from himself. he's a cerebral guy, graduated #1 in his high school class. If he can stay out of his head and let his stuff do the talking, he'll be much close to the good Trevor May we saw in September, than the guy who was throwing the ball anywhere but over the plate to start his MLb career. I can't wait to see Trevor May go HAM on opposing batters. It's going to be fun.
22. freaking awesome interview with Mr. Mustache. Great show, one of the better ones you guys have had, and easily the best since the season ended. Great great great.
23. Sandana was a fantasy stud for me down the stretch, mostly because, as Physics mentioned, he was elligible at 2B, SS and OF and somehow just kept hitting all season long. I even had Plouffe on my roster for a bit when he was hot. I picked up Hughes early in a couple leagues, and although he had a rough stretch heading into the ASG, his season was fantastic, especially since I was able to get him on the waiver wire for nothing!
24. I like Eddie as the starting SS going into 2015. If the Twins go out and sign a true CF or Aaron Hicks can show more than on base skills early in the season, then SanDana can start getting regular, or at least semi-reglar reps at SS, but I think the best bet is to have both Eddie and Danny in the lineup everyday, and that likely means Eddie at SS and Danny in CF. This is a good problem to have.
25. "Consider this, on ground balls in the middle of the diamond, opponents hit .500, the highest in all of baseball." This is going to give me nightmares all off-season.
