  1. I don't understand why it wouldn't impact guys with just one option left. The Twins still wouldn't want to pay major league salaries to those guys if they got hurt.
  2. Not too surprising. Ellsbury was amazing last year, and it seems every Twin under performed. When you lose 99 games, you are bound to have a lot players that are worse than replacement (-WAR). This is the concern this year as well, if Mauer and Morneau don't return to pre-2011 form, the Twins are without any star quality players and it will be a fight to win 70 games.
  3. I definitely have Gordon at the top here, but find the ranking the others a bit tougher. I think Delmon could put up good numbers in Detroit, but then I saw too many lousy inside-out swings in his time here to take him seriously, was that the player or the coaching? I also think Detroit may DH him more, depending on how Cabrera handles 3B. Viciendo looks like a player, but is really unproven, Brantley is pretty blah, though he's a good defender and has speed. I think we've beat the potential of Revere to death over the last week or so, what else can we say. He has to learn to get on first, or his ceiling is going to be that of a 4th OF.
  4. Yea, what he said. I do think it there's any issue, it isn't with pulling the ball to right, but guys like Morneau and Mauer who had a lot of success going the other way. Either way, it makes sense to get more data from a healthy lineup before messing with the dimensions. Don't forget the home record in 2010 when you start talking about moving the fences in.
  5. Ramirez Cabrera Peralta Escobar Carroll Ramirez is consistently decent with the bat, and excellent with the glove. I have to see Cabrera do it a second year before I believe it. He tailed off in the 2nd half last year, still ok, but not the monster he was in the first half. I don't really believe in Peralta, Escobar is an excellent fielder with excellent speed, but still questionable if he can hit. Carroll is a utility infielder masquerading as a starter for the Twins. I fear he will perform like he did in his previous AL stints rather than like he did in the easier NL. He's an improvement on what we ran out there last year in that he should at least provide steady defense. Quite a contrast in quality between SS and 2B in the division though.
  6. Any Offense for the Twins yet? Looks like the heart of the order is what we hope to start the season with.
  7. Where did all the love for Plouffe come from? He has done nothing yet to show he can hit the way a corner OF should hit, yet everyone is penciling him as a solution, or even a DH. Yes he hit a few HRs last year, but really that was the first sign of life from his bat, and he's been in the system a long time. Revere does not have any power, I get that, but his speed can be a weapon, if utilized properly. From my perspective the biggest issue is that we really have no depth/options in the OF this year. If Span's sore neck is related to his concussion and he's shut down for a period, does anyone really want to go into the year with an OF of Plouffe, Revere and Willingham? That's one legit hitter in the OF and two huge question marks, and no impact players in the minors ready to step in. We're all hoping Benson can step up this year, but really he needs time in AAA to refine his approach. I'd be excited about Plouffe's offensive potential if he was still a middle infielder, but there's nothing in his past to suggest he's going to hit enough to be an everyday corner OF on a winning team.
  8. Actually on Prop or Moneyline bets such as this that isn't necessarily true. It MAY be true, if you see something like Twins over 73.5 -110, Twins under 73.5 -110. But you also will see something like this Twins over 73.5 -110, Twins under 73.5 +100. NOTE: I haven't actually looked to see what the moneyline is for the Twins this year, just know that the traditional 10% vig we are used to from football pointspreads does not apply to props or moneyline bets. Casinos often win and lose big on these sorts of bets because they don't have enough money coming in on both sides of the bet to ensure equal $s on both sides. On a bet such a this the VIG may be built in, but doesn't always exist.
  9. Who's the Troll that voted for Kotchman? Care to explain the vote?
  10. How many world series appearances to the Twins have under Ryan? ZERO. Relying purely on scouting while ignoring sabermatics is as silly as ignoring scouting. The best system would seem to be to use a combination. The Twins haven't ignored "numbers" under Ryan/Smith - however, they have constantly focused on the wrong numbers, such as BA, RBI, Wins and Saves.
  11. I've never understood the Twins stubbornness to stick with mediocrity. It seems like we have these discussions every year. The Twins make a decision to give a job to a mediocre player such as Casilla or Carroll, and then refuse to consider a change when there may be a player either producing better, or with a higher upside. It's one thing to say there is no sense in rushing Dozier because we have a combo of Jeter-Cano at SS-2B, but it's quite another to stunt a guys growth behind Carroll -Casilla. Seriously if the guy is ready then play him, you aren't benching a future all-star! I'm not sure if he is ready, but I do know Gardenhire liked him out of Spring Training last year and he has done nothing but shine since. The Twins offense is already stunted when you consider almost 1/2 the lineup has little to no power. Adding a guy with even slight potential like Dozier makes the entire lineup better.
  12. The point isn't that they signed Carroll. It's that they let a quality SS go, in favor of Cassilla. Cassilla does not belong in ML teams starting lineup, at least now. Especially one that has playoff designs. It was a horrible decision to give away Hardy and they would be in a much better place today if they hadn't made that hasty decision.
  13. I think this points to what a HUGE mistake the Twins made dealing Hardy last year. He signed a reasonable contract, is a good fielder and is at least competent hitting. How much better would we all feel going into the season with Hardy at Short and Carroll at 2nd?
  14. Yes - he says "System At a Glance: Boring drafts have led to a boring system, but the prospects at Low-A this year, including slugger Miguel Sano, gives them some upside." I think this tends to agree with the points made in the previous thread about the lack of talent in the upper level of the Twins system. The good news is that most the teams in our division are worse off, and there will always be questions about how long the Royals can hold onto all the talent they have in the system.
  15. Boy, what a bunch of ick. I picked Kipnis, but you basically have a group of 5 unproven players at 2B. Beckham seems to have the talent, but hasn't figured things out, so he could always surprise. If I was building a team this is the order I'd put them in, though it's not too unlikely Casilla has a better year than Giavotella --- Kipnis, Beckham, Giavotella, Casilla, Inge. Am I the only one that wonders why the Twins continue to try and force Casilla into a starters role? It seems obvious he would be a great utility/bu middle IF as every time he's given the starters job he throws up all over himself.
  16. In the vain of this article - are the Twins approaching a cycle of mediocrity, I fear that may be the case. I don't think it's been pre-destined that will happen, but I think ownership with their tight budget may force it to happen. They lowered the budget this year because they project lower revenue as a result of how horrible they were last year. The key word is PROJECT. In my mind it kind of becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when you don't spend the necessary dollars to compete. If they Twins had invested another $10 million this year to make the bullpen better and provide another quality bat or SP we would all be rightfully excited about where this team was headed. However, cutting the payroll makes the team worse, meaning less fans show up this year, they cut again next year and we are back to the dome days, despite "investing" hundreds of millions of taxes so the Twins didn't cry poverty every year. The fact that this is happening just 2 years after the new stadium has opened really angers me.
  17. Fielder, Hosmer, Konerko, Mourneu, Kotchman. Mourneau is too much of a question mark and the first 3 are studs. I hope Morneau can rebound and prove me wrong though!
  18. I think taking a chance on Doyle should be limited to ST. If it looks like he can help in the pen or as the 5th starter, should one of the top 5 go down then fine. But I'll be pretty ticked if the Twins deal a player with a high ceiling just to keep him in the minors like they did Diamond. He doesn't have the skills to be anything but a back of the rotation starter or long reliever. Spending 50k to find out if he's a fit there is fine, but spending 50k and a guy that has a chance to be a lot better makes no sense. Let's hope the Twins learned from their mistake with Diamond. Seriously how many soft tossing "strike throwers" do we need?
  19. I don't see how you can make that claim, Ryan has been heavily involved in the Twins draft and player development for the last several years. Unless you think Ryan is an improvement on Ryan, this just doesn't make sense to me.
  20. I went with Baker. I wanted to go with Liriano, as he certainly still has the most upside, but I think it's just too hard to count on anything significant from him right now. I do think that Liriano pitching like he did in 2010 is almost as important to the Twins success this year as a healthy Mauer and Morneau.
  21. Pretty pathetic showing by the Twins "A" team lineup facing mostly minor league arms. Sure hoping these guys start to pick it up soon.
  22. Well, I think Gibson still can have impact in the next couple years, and I wouldn't be surprised if Wimmers becomes a nice option as well. Back to the main topic, my earlier point still remains. Teams that win divisions, and titles, don't do it with lineups consisting of the players like the Twins currently have in the upper level of the minors. There may be guys who are ML starters, but they are guys who are going to be starters on second division teams. You win with impact players and the Twins are sadly short on those guys in the upper levels of the minors. For a team that is supposed to be built from within, it's a sad statement, especially when you see that they also haven't graduated any impact players in the last couple years. It's far too long a drought for a team that is supposed to rely heavily on home grown players. Terry Ryan is primarily responsible for the lack of talent at these levels as he was in charge or "advising" over all the recent drafts. That's one reason I was never as excited about his return as most. I think he's an upgrade over Smith, but the recent results don't scream huge success as far as evaluating and elevating amateur talent.
  23. Well, I think Rochester is Ok, it would be nice if it was someplace closer, but I'm glad our affiliate is in the IL instead of the PCL, with it's inflated batting lines. I think back in the 70s Toledo was our affiliate for a few years, and that might be as close as we could get in the IL right now, but they are a nicer fit with Detroit.
  24. Boy, I hope Morneau is able to come back stronger than predicted, but it really is a crap shoot at this point. I just remember what a beast he was pre-concussion, if he could get back somewhat close to that... Seriously, Luke Hughes has no business being anywhere near regular 1B ABs and the other guys mentioned (besides the guy I hope is usually catching) really are not major league first basemen. Parmelee has a chance, but I think we agree, he could really use some AAA ABs to re-find his power. The Twins are in a tough position because they don't know what to expect out of Morneau, who is one of their highest paid hitters. Ideally they would have signed someone to DH, that could also fill in at 1B, I thought Doumit was that guy, but I guess 1B is not the ideal spot for him. If they could get a guy like Derek Lee for a couple million, they would be in a lot better position to deal with potential maladies that Justin will deal with this year, and have a fairly capable DH, allowing Doumit more time behind the plate and in the OF.
  25. I think this is a really good point. But we all have to realize that just being a big league starter doesn't mean the player is a top talent, or even impact player. How many of these guys would be considered potential starters for the Phillies, Tigers, Yankees, Rays, Red Sox, Reds, Brewers, etc, or any of the other first division teams? Maybe Benson, based upon his athletic ability, but that's probably it, and he wouldn't be considered a potential starter until 2013 at the earliest.
