  1. InB4 "Niskioka all over again" It was a worthwhile gamble by the Twins. Even though it didn't work out I can't knock the decision to take a chance on foreign talent.
  2. What if he wasn't asked to play ridiculously out of position in RF? What if local columnists didn't generalize and make sweeping accusations that couldn't be supported by tangible evidence? What if the public opinion of Sano wasn't poisoned heading into this season? What if fouling a ball off your shin has nothing to do with your weight? What if Sano once again has a good season above his listed weight?
  3. There was no excuse for putting together the bullpen they did to start the season. The Haley experiment magnified that issue & created a completely unnecessary roster crunch. The Garcia double switch was basically a wash but the Kintzler trade didn't make a ton of sense based on the return; even with the team trending down. You can't knock them for not seeing a WC birth, but part of the job is setting up the team to compete when young players like Buxton do ascend. That side has been lacking, hopefully this offseason is a change.
  4. Everything is addressed in previous posts. If you choose to ignore the salary numbers and trends in spending/revenue/profit because they don't fit the "Twins spend," narrative then that's your choice. You can easily google the Twin's revenue over the last decade +. Check out those new TV deals teams are signing then take a look at the revenue sharing going on. The Twin's revenue has increased dramatically since Target Field opened yet the payroll has been trending in the opposite direction. This FO hasn't done anything to indicate the Twins are suddenly going to start spending real money in FA. Any reason to believe they will is pure hope. If you choose to approach the offseason believing they'll break the bank that's fine, but the only thing "unnecessary," is attacking other posters for being realistic.
  5. There were a number of big pitchers signed in 14' and 15', none of them are signed beyond when any of the Twins core hits FA, and all of them would slot in ahead of any pitcher this team currently has. That isn't an albatross, it's stability for a rotation that desperately needs it. FA signing rarely are great value; that's why it's important to draft and develop well, you can offset the overpay.
  6. i realize they aren't exclusive. Yeah, they spent just enough to make sure they were in the bottom half of the league the last six years. As was the case with the Twins. It was clear the plan was to build with the youth. There was/is no reason to not bring in front end pitching to supplement the team while the positional talent is cheap other than an aversion to spending money, which was my original point.
  7. That circumstance exists because of their own mismanagement. They don't get pass for not spending because they made a mess for themselves. So their current pitching situation is better now than it would've been with a big FA pitcher? I'll disagree. The Cubs brought Lester in following a 89 loss season. You can collect talent while waiting for the youth movement to hit. That's what the Twins should've been doing. That's how you maximize a window. We're already hearing arguments against bringing in pitching because the core players need extensions. If they would've brought in a top FA a few years ago that likely 5-6 year contract would be off the books before any of the core hit FA. I would've been completely onboard for a slash and burn a la Houston, but the Twins are past the point where they can operate like that. I don't think it's that they spent too much, rather they just completely bungled resource allocation/timing.
  8. Misnomer? The payroll peaked in 2011 following a good 10', and a move into a new stadium, and then instantly it was slashed. It hasn't been anywhere near that 10' - 11' mark since. Even with those "big FA signings," they've still finished in the bottom half of the league in spending every year since 11'. Revenue across baseball is increasing every year but the Twins payroll has actually decreased each of the last 2 seasons, and the difference between 16' and 17' was fairly significant. I agree this team is starting to open a window of contention, but this young core didn't sneak up on ownership. They knew this team was moving towards being competitive and rather than bringing in talent they've cut spending the past few seasons. To me, the opposing trends in spending vs. performance don't seem to reflect an ownership group that is willing is spend. Honestly, I would love to see them start spending on top FAs, but right now it isn't a misnomer that the Twins forego being real players in free agency; it's reality.
  9. Gibson and Mejia are "locks," Optimism swiftly fades...
  10. She says it isn't about risk, you post saying it is....you do realize that isn't the same thing right? You're right, he never traded anyone. It's a big reason why the Twins were consistently bounced immediately from the postseason. They had some great players and failed to support them. You'd be wise to realize there are reasons TR is no longer in the organization...
  11. Where are you getting this? Did you read the OP I responded to? That post said you play for the current season. I disagree that's the only way to build a winning team. Houston certainly didn't didn't play for the current season in 11'-13'. Idc how each individual piece was acquired. That was never the point of the post...
  12. It's pretty clear... Houston went scorched earth for a couple years and it has paid off. They set their sights on building beyond a single season. I disagree that you only need to be concerned with "winning current games." The Astros have proven that isn't the only strategy that works.
  13. Almost all of their top end pitching prospects have dealt with injury; especially last season. That is part of the deal with pitching. You must be very concerned given the injury history of the youth and the look of the current group...
  14. "You ask for more assets because of the risk being absorbed by taking JDL... and there was a lot of it... a lot less than whatever risk LA absorbs by taking BD." Maybe you two should figure that one out...
  15. I guess I'm not as enamored with idea of one more year of Dozier or having to pay significant money to extend him.
  16. Where have I been inconsistent? Risk aversion isn't going to get them the pitching they need.
  17. The current WS champs would argue differently.
  18. Chargois isn't JDL so not sure where you're going with that....but he is a future bullpen piece so... If you're brining in a starting pitcher with the intention of him being in the rotation beyond 18' you're setting yourself up for the future...
  19. They would've had him through 2023.....so yes, it is.
  20. How is attempting to build a staff beyond 2017 a myopic view?
  21. Moore showed up in 06'... Which is why they won't hold onto Cain, Hosmer, ect...We've already watched key pieces of that bullpen walk. Watch them start slashing position players from that roster. That payroll arrow is pointing down, not up. They built a core, bulked up where they needed to and made a run to two WS and won one. That is the definition of maximizing for a team like KC. I never said I want the Twins to copy that blueprint but if I'm a Royals fan I can't be mad about "one division title," over that span.
  22. They made 2 consecutive WS appearances.... I'll take that over division titles any day. Given the constraints Moore had to work within Idk how you can call that run with their young players anything other than great execution. If ownership actually decided to spend they could've been a regular contender.
  23. Everybody wants to "win," every move and always wants more. As fans of course we always want a better deal, but our feelings towards that are irrelevant. Sometimes you pay or take market value, and in this case it was JDL.
  24. The existing contract is part of his value. He's cheap now, he won't be after this season. You move vets who have actual trade value, can leave soon via FA, and play a position that the organization can fill from within. Hello Brian Dozier.
  25. I would ask for more too, but it doesn't mean the Dodgers were ever going to give up JDL + Stewart + Buehler + more like you suggested.
