I guess we disagree on "good options." Rosario and Grossman are both 4th OF in my opinion, so I think Puig's playing time would not be an issue if he were here. And one of them would probably go in the deal. I am not going to speculate on hypothetical off-field issues with Puig. No one here really knows how he would act in MN or what kind of teammate he'd be so it doesn't do any good to pretend we know.
He would play every day with the Twins (Buxton, Kepler, Puig). And obviously Dozier is not the problem. I was just pointing out that having a bunch of good teammates like the Twins have supposedly had the last bunch of seasons is not nearly as valuable as having talent.
Look at the Twins record the last five years with all the "good teammates" - Dozier, plouffe, suzuki, Hunter, Pelfrey etc. - and compare it to the Dodgers with Puig. That stuff is media driven and overblown
Sure, Puig is a nice name. But in all seriousness i'm not worried about one possible comparison. I bet there's a player comparison that puts him in the hall of fame too
He just pitched pretty well in his last start for Baltimore and I'd assume he's one of the last players they'd want to get rid of in a trade for Santana
If the Twins ever had a chance to trade Suzuki and Grossman or Rosario for Puig and didn't do it they would be insane. You don't pass up on that kind of talent
You are banking on Santana staying desirable to other teams. He could revert back to being garbage or get hurt, and then we are stuck with another over the hill pitcher. The Twins rarely trade assets for prospects so I'm open to Antony taking a shot at it
This is the mindset the 2011-2016 Twins FO took too and look where it got us. We don't want to be too bad so we better sign/retain some extremely average players to push the team closer to average, but still bad. A rebuilding franchise has to go all in when rebuilding and take advantage of Santanas when they get hot at the right time
Ok so it's a weak FA market. Wouldn't that be more incentive for other teams to try and trade for a red hot, cost-controlled pitcher that could be helpful down the stretch and then be useful in the back of the rotation for the next couple seasons?
Agree to disagree then. Much more likely in my opinion to get a desperation offer from a pitching starved contender than a team looking for offseason help where there's way more options available.
I don't think Santana was the pitcher Gagne had in mind. Ervin is about three class levels below what Morris and Blyleven were and the '17 Twins are going to be nowhere near the world series or the playoffs.
Duffey is mentally and mechanically a mess right now. I saw a different release point on every pitch last night. Needs to be sent down to figure it regardless if he's a bullpen arm or starter going forward
Well technically he finished dead last in the AL central, but I agree there's no reason a good GM can't be a good person. Blind loyalty doesn't make one a good person though. Nor does failing to adapt to a changing environment. My lasting thoughts on him will always be good person, poor GM.
Classic case of "nice guys finish last." He wasn't cut out for the cutthroat world of professional sports, and that's ok. I blame ownership for not recognizing it sooner, and Terry a little bit for not realizing he just wasn't meant for the job anymore.
