  1. That would be way cool, but I'm pretty sure MLB limits jersey numbers to two digits.
  2. It will be interesting to see if he keeps that number in the future, and even more interesting to see if Buxton keeps 25. Players don't always keep their first number. Hrbek wore 26 in 1981 before switching to 14 the next year. Justin Morneau wasn't always 33. He wore 27 his first year. Buxton has worn 7 through his entire professional career, and I've wondered if the Twins would be allowed to use 07 if that's what Buxton wanted.
  3. Corey Provus made a point during last night's broadcast that Dozier scores over 50% of the time he reaches base and that there are very few players who do that more frequently. I thought that was interesting. Any of the stat heads here care to flesh that out?
  4. I'm having a last-four-years flashback.
  5. I think that's it in a nutshell; they don't feel he's fully rehabbed yet.
  6. 21.6. Must have been a fat-finger slip.
  7. So this game could be significant for a pitcher. Lohse defeats his 30th team or Meyer gets his first win.
  8. OK, here's the answer. It's Felipe, Matty, Jesus and Boog.
  9. Can anyone name the four Alou brothers?
  10. Cripes! Do we have a hard-throwing right hander in the pen?
  11. The Yankees used to have one too. Babe.
  12. Well, at least you look older than your brother
  13. Uh, you do know that Miller Park has a roof on it? And that it's closed tonight?
  14. The Twins are the only team Lohse has not defeated. But in spite of his extensive experience he still doesn't know that you never, ever throw Dozier a high fastball.
  15. The thing is, there are already six other starters on the Ft. Myers roster. I thought I had read that the plan was to use him in relief for now and then work him in as a starter next spring. Guess we'll see.
  16. To talk a little further about what I said about installing Meyer as a closer...I don't think the Twins should give up or have given up on finding out if he can succeed as a starter. If he can, he's probably more valuable doing that than relieving. That said, a shut-down closer is just as hard to find as a power starter and also very valuable. The best closers have power pitches, good control and nerves of steel. And throw right-handed. Perkins has the most important three of those four attributes. Meyer certainly has two, and if he can develop the control and cultivate the attitude he could be a ninth-inning (and occasionally eighth-inning) stud. It's way too early to know what will happen and it's not something that happens overnight--it took Aguilera a year to make the transition--but I'm sure there are people in the Twins organization who will be keeping that thought in mind as the next few years play out.
  17. Move Perkins to LH setup and install Meyer as closer. (Mostly but not totally kidding.)
  18. It would be nice, but that's a big if.
  19. It's very rare for a pitcher to make the major league roster in the same season in which he's drafted, even just as a September call-up. Brandon Finnegan is very much an outlier, and to expect Jay to be on the Twins roster this year is probably unreasonable. He just turned 21. There's no reason to fast-track him unless he blows everyone away and moves up through the minors quickly.
  20. I remember the game when Gardy tried to stretch Nathan for 3 innings. He had rookie Jesse Crain and his 98-mph (straight) fastball in the pen but didn't want to bring him in because of his inexperience and the fact that this was a postseason game in Yankee Stadium. Retrospect is easy, but as soon as Nathan put a runner on base I'd have brought in Crain and told him if he gets the save he's the hero and if he doesn't it's the managers fault for mishandling the bullpen and bringing a rookie in to face Jeter and A-roid so go ahead and try to blow them away.
  21. That's still too often to see the Brewers or the Phillies.
