  1. With a little help from the internets: John Candelaria Paul Giel Jerry Koosman Pete Mackanin (Phillies mgr) Charlie Manuel (former Phillies mgr) Billy Martin (as a player) Tippy Martinez
  2. Here's an example of how culture clash can unwittingly get someone in trouble. Back in the early '80's there was a Hmong immigrant (refugee, really) in Minneapolis who went to Lake Calhoun and caught several dozen fish for the purpose of feeding his family. He had no reason to think there was anything wrong with that and was unpleasantly surprised to be arrested for fishing without a license and taking more than the legal limit. I think the cultural issue is very real, at least for young players. In the DR they have female cheerleaders (for lack of a better term) at baseball games. And look at what it's like in Japan. The fans' antics at games would be thought of as very odd by Americans. (At least I think it's very odd.) And you probably saw the video that was recently posted on another thread about the Japanese player going through a flamboyant warmup routine when he came to the plate. Players learning baseball in those environments learn the culture surrounding the game as well and it's a far cry from MLB culture. It's totally understandable that there will be a learning curve. Whether MLB culture should change is another issue, but a good organization should make sure its young foreign signees understand that the culture surrounding professional baseball in the US and Canada is much different from what they learned growing up.
  3. I think it was Tony LaRussa who was asked about having a runner steal second with a large early lead. The quote was something to the effect of, "If the other team promises to stop trying to score runs then we will too." That's a totally different matter than exuberant celebration, but the traditional response in MLB would be similar. I'm coming to the conclusion that baseball's unwritten rules should probably be reined in. Had this been done 15 years ago it would have greatly decreased the number of times Gardy got ejected. It used to drive the man nuts when the opposition would HBP one of our players without so much as a slap on the wrist and then the umps would issue a warning that meant retaliation = ejection for the player and the manager. The thought that the umps might have the authority to eject for a bat flip makes me shudder, but there must be some way to fairly codify the rules to deal with such an issue. The NFL gives a penalty for excessive celebration, so I would think MLB could come up with something.
  4. This is really no different from any other illness or injury. He has a condition that will worsen if immediate treatment is not started. The sooner it is dealt with the sooner he'll return. I've never really liked him based on his public persona but I wish him the best in his recovery.
  5. Based on what I've read over the years Gardy has generally been well-regarded by baseball insiders. I'd think Washington might be a good fit. Miami, on the other hand, probably not so much.
  6. As you will see if you re-read my comment I did not reference any specific post or contibutor. My comment was intended as a general comment and was not directed at any one person. I apologize if it was not written clearly enough in that way but your inferences are inaccurate.
  7. I've said before that while talking specific trades here may be fun it's nowhere near what actually happens when GM's negotiate. Anyone can be traded if TR feels it will improve the organization and if the GM on the other end feels it will improve his organization. Teams trade from an area of surplus to fill an area of need and it's usually difficult to match that with another team. Plus, you have to give up good talent to get good talent. Giving up 5 mediocre players will not get you one superstar. In general terms I think Plouffe is the best trading chip we have. I'm hesitant to trade starting pitching because of everything that can happen during the course of a season.
  8. And now, 4 1/2 months of waiting. When do pitchers and catchers report?
  9. I hope I never see another messin' with sasquatch commercial.
  10. I think you can tell by the dearth of posts what you've missed. Not much.
  11. Top of 9, I'd think.
  12. Hunter understands what the Twins will want to do with their outfield in 2016. I'd think that we'll want to have four of Rosario, Buxton, Hicks, Arcia, and Kepler. And maybe even Robinson. We certainly shouldn't commit to Hunter as a regular right fielder. I'd vote no.
  13. I'm going to make a prediction for 2016. I'll remind everyone about it if I'm right but if I'm wrong everyone will forget because it's so early. I think Nolasco will have a good year.
  14. Showing Torii's speech reminds me of Blyleven on the last day of the 1986 season when he presaged the 1987 World Championship.
  15. Stick a fork in him . Seriously, though, it's too bad he couldn't have gone out on a better note.
  16. For me there's always kind of a wistful feeling after the last game of the season, even during the lean years. I divide the year into two parts: baseball season and waiting for baseball season.
  17. I think the prize should be the same thing that Reusse and Soucheray used to give as prizes on their sports talk shows: our warmest personal regards.
  18. This is exactly what should happen, and PM should wait until the rest of the team is on the field and then make the substitution just before the first pitch of the inning.
  19. I'll comment that I think the snarky Nolasco comments are out of line. People can post what they want to post, and that's fine, but until the other night he hadn't pitched since May. Give the guy a break.
  20. I'm reminded of the incident involving Sano after a home run in AA a couple years back. I don't recall the details but I think there was a dramatic bat flip and other actions showing up the opposition. Jeff Smith promptly removed him from the game at sat him out for a couple games afterward. Watching Sano now that type of thing would seem out of character. Now he waits until he gets to the dugout and celebrates with his teammates. It leads me to think that that behavior was indeed cultural and that at age 20 he hadn't had enough experience in the ways of American/Canadian baseball to understand how it would be perceived. This is not a defense of either culture, but I'm sure Sano now understands that if he were to do what he did in the big leagues he could expect a fastball in the ribs on his next at-bat.
  21. I'll strongly disagree. You're saying that Boyer is so stupid that he can throw only where Mauer's glove is? Sorry, but I don't think that's true. Boyer has to throw to the fair territory side of the runner. It's 100% on him. And I don't think Boyer forgot, I think he just made a bad throw. Errors happen.
