  1. ---What's also interesting is that while that's consistently an issue for Souhan with the Twins (and in all fairness, he has a point on Slowey), he's completely the opposite on the T-Wolves. Every other month he writes a column railing on David Kahn for not drafting DeMarcus Cousins that includes a rant about how his talent justifies having to deal with his character issues.
  2. I'm not sure there can be much question about who our all-star rep should be anymore.
  3. Hammer time?
  4. Nor can Perk's wretched outing. And Doumit has gotta find a way to put a ball in play in that AB in the 9th.
  5. What in the name of everything holy was that?
  6. Unreal. Winning run on third with no outs and we can't get him home. Incidentally, I heard Soriano's last HR just landed somewhere in Lino Lakes.
  7. There are not enough swear words in the English language to express how I will feel if the Cubs are highfiving on the field tonight.
  8. Ugh. Doumit. Lets win it here, boys. I do not want this going to extras.
  9. Love the Big Canadian
  10. If there's no walk off here, this will be one frustrating loss.
  11. These lists are always fun. The Campanella exclusion is inexcusable. A few other guys you could make good arguments for: Ted Simmons, Elston Howard and, much as I hate to admit it, Jorge Posada
  12. ---Yes, I'll be sure to remove my sock puppet first so it doesn't soften the blow.
  13. Good as always, Nick. While I prefer it were with the Twins, I'm glad to see RA having success given all the stuff he's opened up about. As for the thrylos list, It's kind of like reading an editorial written by a hardcore member of one of the two major political parties about a candidate from the other. It's supported by facts and passion, but it's far too biased, selective and anecdotal to constitute the damning indictment of Anderson he concludes it is. You need to account for other variables that impact a pitcher's performance (as the pitching coach is not the only one or even the primary one), and at least attempt to balance it out with counterexamples. And while I don't have the time to do it, if one were so inclined, I would be that you could put together a similar list for just about any team for the last dozen years. You can't have a 100-man roster. Decisions have to be made about who to keep and who to let go. Inevitably, some guys you let go will catch on elsewhere and have some success. Also, it seems to me that if you're going to assess Anderson as a pitching coach, you'd at least want to take a peek at how his guys have fared relative to the competition. The Twins have pretty consistently ranked among the better teams in the AL in pitching, so I don't think the guy is completely worthless. And I say this as someone who favors bringing in a new coaching staff next year. Not becuase I'm in the "Gardy/Vavra/Anderson are idiots" crowd, I think they've all been solid, but I think things have gotten a bit stale, and it's time for a change.
  14. Well, certainly not if you're going to resort to name-calling. But I did ask you a specific question. Maybe you could start there.
  15. Thanks, jokin, I needed a good laugh. Hockey is just lucky bounces, deflections and hot goalies. Yah, OK. Gretzky, Lemieux, Hull - they just managed to get a lot of really lucky bounces against stone cold goalies. And the Wild have been offensively-challenged for years because the puck never bounces their way, and they just happened to always catch opposing goalies on a hot streak. And yes, I am juvenille while you are a model of class, dignity and maturity - your approach to forum discussion is one we should all aspire to. Cheers.
  16. 1) Sorry, was there champagne-popping or back-slapping in this thread that I missed, or are you just setting up straw men? 2) "Cold hard reality"? Good heavens, son, it's a game. It's entertainment. A harmless diversion. Losing your job when you've got a family to feed, being diagnosed with cancer, the crap going on in Syria, those are cold, hard realities. The fact that one group of millionaires who you like isn't hitting, catching and throwing a ball as well as other groups of millionaires that you don't? Ummm, yeah, not so much. Baseball is a distraction from cold hard realities for a lot of fans. It's fun. And at least for some people, it's a lot more fun to hold out hope of success even when you know it's a remote possibility than to find the 2,395th meaningless, newfangled stat to cite in your latest "piss on the Twins" rant. 3) Would you care to give us examples of "some perennial winners who have top-level prospects blocked but are caught short in positions of need" who would be willing to give up said prospects for what the Twins have to offer?
  17. ---The impact that the manager has on wins and losses is massively overestimated here. Reading through some of these threads, you'd think this was a video game and Gardy was holding the controller.
  18. ---I agree with what you and CDog have said. I'll and that it's not only interesting how people need to assign blame to something, but always come up with such simple explanations. You don't see lists of 5+ things. It's all Gardy. Or Dozier. Or Diamond. Or the schedule. The reality is that explanations are rarely that simple. The "it takes an organization to win a championship" line is cliched but true. By the same token, it takes an organization to create a train wreck. And sometimes, there really isn't a satisfactory, identifiable explanation. I remember an interview with Thome after the 2010 playoff exit where he talked about how he played on a lot of really talented teams that made the playoffs. Some years, they made deep runs. Other years, they fizzled. But he said they always felt good going into the playoffs, and looking back, he couldn't really point to reasons why some postseasons went one way while others didn't. The LA Kings current playoff run, for example, simply defies explanation.
  19. ---Yeah 9 games isn't all that much in early June, but we dug ourselves into too deep a hole, and unfortunately, I don't think we have what it takes to get out of it. It's not like the 2006 team when we had Santana and Liriano (in rookie phenom mode) in the rotation. It's weird, if you had told me on the eve of opening day that on June 6th, we'd be only 3 games behind the Tigers, I would have thought that would be a good thing. I wasn't sold on the Tigers as a powerhouse, but I thought they'd be better than this.
  20. Merriam-Webster defines 'paralysis' as "a state of powerlessness or incapacity to act." The Twins are not powerless to act due to Mauer's contract.
  21. I'm with you 100%. I recall a hockey exec once likened the NHL draft to "trying to figure out which 6th grader will make the best doctor." Good line, and equally applicable to MLB.
  22. ---Maybe not directly, but there are certainly people basing judgments on things that only an insider would know. (any statement to the effect of Gardenhire disliked player X for reason Y so he orchestrated trade Z falls into this category.) And while the local scribes and talking heads discuss this stuff and they are closer than any of us, they're not really insiders either. Much of what they say is based on rumor and perception, and they have an interest in getting people fired up about things, so I tend to take what they say with a grain of salt.
  23. Thank you for adding some sanity to the discussion.
  24. You shouldn't take everything you read and hear on the radio as the word of God. Information travels fast these days, and so does misinformation. Unless you're actually there or getting it from a reliable source who was actually there, you've got little more than speculation and rumor.
  25. To answer the questions posed: 1) No. I was uneasy about the deal at the time. I liked the fact that they swung for the fences on a trade for once, but Delmon struck me as a guy who would never reach his potential. And I liked Bartlett. 2) Tough one. I remember Souhan writing a column in mid-2010 saying his value was at its peak and we should trade him. I wasn't sure I agreed, but I definitely saw his point. Delmon was very good in stretches and very bad in stretches. The bad stretches made me want to get rid of him, but the good stretches made me wary of doing do. 3) Totally understand the thinking. The 2007 Twins were 25th in the league in runs scored, and 6th in runs against. Trading pitching for offense made sense. In fact a lot of the fan base was calling for it. I just wish it had been a different deal. I'm not as down on this deal as others are. Bartlett had a good year in 2008 and a great year in 2009, but hasn't really done much of anything since. And Garza is a nice starter, but his career 54-58 tells you than he's not the perennial Cy Young candidate that Twins fans often make him out to be. As for the Gardy-bashing, I always get a chuckle out of how freely the rabid anti-Gardy wing of the fan base cites things like his treatment of players, his clubhouse demeanor and his orchestration of trades as evidence of what a terrible manager he is. I had no idea we had so many Twins insiders in our presence.
