  1. ---So you know better than a guy with batting titles, silver sluggers and an MVP what approach he should take at the plate? Maybe he could hire you to coach him. That is if you're not too busy giving Meryl Streep acting lessons. All those times she was nominated for an Oscar but went home without a little gold statue. Perhaps if you could suggest a better approach to the craft......
  2. Yes. Bobby V's managing was what caused Willingham's bullet in the 8th to be hit right at someone Ross's deep fly in the 9th to have just enough to get out of the park. Gardy's poor managing is what caused Plouffe to just miss a walk-off homer. I'm sure if Bobby V had been managing the Twins, that ball would've been outta here!
  3. You've gotta be kidding me. It's one thing to let Papi or Pedroia or A-Gon beat you. But Cody Ross?
  4. ---Yeah, that's my biggest problem with the "Gardy sucks" crowd. They rip him endlessly for the number of postseason failures he'd had while failing to appreciate how truly difficult it is to GET to the postseason as regularly as Gardy's Twins have. It happened so often they started taking in for granted, even though it was a tough slog. To the extent they do acknowledge that, they dismiss it with the "weak division" argument, even though the Tigers, White Sox and even Indians fielded some pretty strong teams in those years. The anti-Gardy crowd will inevitably compare him unfavorably to Tom Kelly. You can't deny TK's rings, but even he wasn't able to able to have the Twins competing consistently from year to year. He managed the team for 15 seasons. They finished 4th or lower in their division in 10 of those.
  5. I don't buy that theory, but if 2012 ends up being like 2011, and we are forced to endure some really bad baseball en route to 90+ losses, then I think it might be time to gracefully part ways with Gardy. I've always been a big Gardy supporter and defended him against the ridiculous claims of the "Gardy sucks" wing of the fan base. And I'm not one to go with the knee-jerk 'fire the manager' demands whenever a team goes into a slump. However, sometimes you have to make a change for change's sake. Players today have short attention spans, and sometimes when they've heard the same voice for too long, they start tuning it out. And if this season did turn out to be another turd, you have to wonder whether the feeling wouldn't be mutual. Gardy might want to rejuvenate his career with a new organization instead of coming back here again and trying for the 5 millionth time to get through to guys like Casilla, Valencia and Liriano. I don't think he'd have much trouble finding another MLB managerial job.
  6. ---Well said. Gardy has finished in the top 3 in MOY voting almost every single year. Yet there's a certain segment of the fan base that is convinced he's the worst manager in the history of baseball.
  7. Liriano is on my list of "Players That I Am Quickly Losing Patience With", right below Casilla and above Valencia.
  8. I was fine with giving Clete a shot, but I really hope this experiment has come to a merciful end. Never mind Jason Kubel, this guy has had me longing for Jason Repko and Jason Tyner! And with Casilla and Valencia doing Butera-esque things in the batter's box, we've basically had 3 automatic outs at the bottom of the lineup lately, which has been frustrating.
  9. It's too early to start pressing panic buttons based on projections. The Nationals are on pace to win 120 games while the Angels are on pace to lose 100. But I wouldn't put a lot of money on either of those things happenings. And while cleaning house in the front office and coaching staff may be emotionally satisfying to a certain segment of the fan base, I don't see it making much of a difference in the short term. If this turns out to be another 90+ loss season, then I'd be in favor of parting ways with Gardenhire. I've always defended him against the "Gardy sucks" ranters. But sometimes guys just need to hear a different voice. As for TR, you've gotta give him more than one offseason to repair all of the damage that Bill Smith did.
  10. I don't see why you'd trade Span. I don't consider him untouchable - if some other team calls TR with an offer too good to refuse, fine. But he's one of the last guys I'd look to as trade bait. He's a legit leadoff hitter who plays solid D in center and has a favorable contract. And it's not like there's anyone he's blocking. I might feel differently if Revere had an arm or had shown he could get on base more consistently.
  11. ---OK a few things here: 1) With the names you're throwing out, you're stretching this out to almost a decade. 2) It's not like you have the ability to keep unlimited players on the major league roster. Eventually things get crowded, you run out of options and you have to make decisions. Every team has to deal with that, not just the Twins. 3) I would bet you could take any organization and come up with a list of guys who they let go or traded over the last 10 years who went on to do better things elsewhere. And for some organizations, they would be much more impressive lists than this one. 4) In that time, there were also guys the Twins acquired who did better here than they did where they came from. Nathan is one obvious example. 5) There are a couple of bad trades represented in this list for sure but every situation is different, and I don't think you can fault the Twins on every one of these. Take Lohse for example. He was given plenty of opportunities here, didn't do much with them, and had worn out his welcome. He really didn't hit his stride until he got to the Cardinals several years later.
  12. OK, I'm not going to blame this loss on umpiring, but Bell's strike zone has been maddeningly inconsistent tonight. That called strike 3 on Span was a ball for Pavano a few times, including a key at-bat with Pena that started the 3-run rally.
  13. Yeah. He's fine as a 4th or 5th outfielder, but this had better be the end of this little experiment of regularly putting him in the lineup.
  14. Well this is getting ugly....
  15. Well that was about as frustrating an inning as you can get. Doumit, with the bases loaded, couldn't have hit that ball any harder, unfortunately it was hit right at someone. Then in the bottom of the inning, a bunch of close plays, close pitches and close calls all go the home team's way, and it's 3-0 Rays.
  16. So basically you've got them playing .500 ball over the next 10. Sounds about right. I'd be surprised if you were off by more than a couple of games in either direction there. It would be nice to them get hot and string together some wins, but lets save that for Detroit, Cleveland and the Mighty Whities. Incidentally, it seems really weird to me that by the end of this stretch, we'll have played over 20% of our games, and had 3 series against the Angels, but only 1 against a division opponent.
  17. I like what Carroll brings at SS. But I've never been sold on Casilla as the long-term answer at 2B, and I'm becoming less convinced that Valencia is at 3B with each game. I'd like to see Dozier at some point this season, but in the meantime, I wouldn't mind seeing more Plouffe and even Burroughs in the infield. Maybe they wouldn't be more effective overall, but they'd be less frustrating. Valencia and Casilla are maddeningly inconsistent, and prone to doing really dumb things at times. I was pretty underwhelmed when the Twins signed Carroll, but I'm strarting to appreciate his ability to keep it simple and consistently make the right play.
  18. Gotta give some love to the 'pen. I thought they'd be the downfall of this team, but they've been solid lately. Nice job by Hendriks. A couple of mistakes, but he'll learn. Carroll is doing a nice job as a stopgap as SS, but I've never been sold on Casilla as the answer at 2B, and I'm becoming less sold on Valencia as the answer at 3B with each game. Pavano vs. Shields tomorrow should be a good one. Sure would be nice to see them come home from a winning road trip.
  19. I have never seen the release of a fringe MLB player spun into such a melodramatic tale of conspiracy, abuse of power, deceit and betrayal. Oh the humanity! Luke Hughes is a guy who has played in 102 major league games, during which he it .224, was mediocre at best defensively. He's going to be 28 in a few months, so I think it's pretty unlikely that the Twins are sitting on a gold mine of untapped potential here, don't you? And in terms of the Souhan thing, I don't know if that's true or not but it's not like this is the first we've heard about the lack of dedication from some players last year. There was much talk of it in the local media after the season. Cuddyer said right after he signed with Colorado that he felt like he was fighting a one-man battle last year. Was Hughes a part of the problem? I don't know, but I suspect nobody else does here either. So saying he wasn't is just assuming facts to fit your theory. Maybe you're right, maybe Gardenhire forced the next Jeff Kent out of town so he could bring up his pet third catcher that he has an irrational attachment to. But don't you think it could also be that this was just a simple case of him wanting to cut ties with a marginal player with a bad attitude? Tell you what - I'll make you a deal. If someone else picks up Hughes and he turns out to be an asset to their team, I'll eat my words. But if his career goes nowhere, you eat yours. Deal?
  20. I dunno. Can you rely on Parmalee to lay down a good bunt? He had 2 doubles in the game, I've got no problem letting him swing away there. 2-13 with RISP, lot's of wasted opportunities. One more clutch hit and they could haven take this series. Hard to overcome your starter getting shelled almost every night. Bullpen deserves some props for the last couple of games.
  21. Agree with Paul. What should they have done, kept sending the same message even though it obviously wasn't getting through to him? Liriano has never really gotten it. He just doesn't seem to have the mental toughness. His demeanor and body language when things don't go his way are terrible. He pouts like a toddler whose older brother just took his favorite toy away from him.
  22. Sooooo........what precisely were you trying to imply when you said that you "couldn't agree more" with Kahrl's piece, the central point of which was that Doumit was being underutilized because of Gardenhire's alleged fear of having him and Mauer in the lineup at the same time?
  23. To quote a Yankee great, it's deja vu all over again.
  24. GIDP is a silly way to judge a team. It's a meaningless stat when looked at in isolation. St. Louis led the league in that category last year with 169. That's 15 more than the next closest team and 54 more than the Twins. But their season didn't turn out too badly, did it?
