  1. How did you feel about him running for a ball, putting his glove up, closing his eyes while looking away and then by pure luck catching it? Was that one of the ones that impressed you?
  2. I agree. He should be in the rotation. Been saying that all along.
  3. When Ryan made the decision that May didn't win a spot in the rotation, he hinted that he'd like May in long man role. So while he doesn't make the call on the field, he is Molitor's boss and I'm sure they talk about how to use players.
  4. That's not at all how it looked to me. A decent RF catches that fairly easily. Sano was playing way back, as instructed, but still should have had that. If not for misjudging it off the bat, it's caught.
  5. Problem is, defense ties in with pitching, which is considered huge. A quality defense makes a bad rotation look a whole lot better or a bad defense can make a good rotation look worse than it is. Pitching has a symbiotic relationship with defense.
  6. Oh my goodness, seriously? Doesn't matter? This is the major leagues, not little league, softball, etc. Defense matters everywhere. Even in high school, the idea of your worst fielder playing RF is tossed out the window. Your best OF arms played RF, it wasn't where the worst player played. In the majors, LF or 1B has been where people have been 'hidden'. There's guys like Manny, Hanley, Delmon, Willingham, etc for LF and a huge line of people for 1B there's no point in even naming them. But again, this is the major leagues. A bad RF can burn/cost a team big time. Certainly doesn't hurt you any less than a bad LF or 1B. Might not matter as much as a poor catcher (which we have) or poor MIs, but the idea that RF is where you hide your worst players at higher levels of baseball is false.
  7. Then Duffey and Berrios will be in front of May. May is a reliever now, that's it. He's done fine in that role so far this year, IMO. 2 games, 4 innings, 1 earned run. He came into a game with no outs and a guy on 3rd base. Very high percentage that guys scores whether his wild pitch happens or not. Then the other run was on a ground ball.
  8. Ok, so when people were defending May going to the bullpen, the main defense is how he would be used as a guy a 7th or 8th inning guy in high leverage situations. Now he's the long guy (like TR alluded to when the decision was made). Best use of May?
  9. Ryan himself said the bullpen was the team's #1 priority in the offseason. Standing pat is indefensible.
  10. no worries, 20 or so wins in May again will cure all ;-)
  11. like I said earlier, 'worse plate discipline on the team facing the best reliever in baseball over the last three years.'
  12. this is getting old quickly. I know, it's only 4 games. How many games until it matters, again?
  13. worse plate discipline on the team facing the best reliever in baseball over the last three years.
  14. 3 Ks by Sano not enough? :-)
  15. I noticed how much of a priority IF defense was with the same infield as we had last year (and only one position above average). Can also tell how much of a priority offense was with us still not having a leadoff type, and 3 starting position players who should be batting 9th.
  16. Weight is an issue and for as athletic as we keep being told he is, it hasn't really shown on the field. At the plate, for sure, but not anywhere in the field.
  17. funny thing is, I'm pretty sure Schwarber is like 30 pounds lighter, right? In any event, Schwarber's injury doesn't make me any more concerned about Sano. I've been concerned about him (and our team defense) since the move.
  18. I think he made that clear when he decided to put Sano in RF to begin with. Defense, not a priority.
  19. There are plenty of players who were/ are young who didn't get better in time even their own positions much less positions they had to learn in the majors. We have had a few on our team over the last few years. Experence won't always equal getting better, either in the field or the plate and defense peaks sooner than hitting.
  20. . Neither has mine; however I think we had different opinions. I predicted 78 wins. This team does have a good lead off guy and has three players who should bat 9th. Other than RF where the defense is bad, the overall defense is average and our rotation and bullpen are below average.
  21. Well, I'm not sure I'd say Nolasco would be one of the better #5 starters in the game and the problem is, our rotation consists of only #3-#5 starters. A Nolasco is easier to stomach when a team has a couple guys who slot into 1-2 spots. Kind of like our lineup. Rosario would be a decent #9 hitter but we have Suzuki/Murphy and the young Buxton that hit below him. Not sure why Escobar does. That is compounded by not having decent choices for lead off either.
  22. Um, Sano looks fairly competent in RF?
