  1. The Manager will be out of the job because you can't replace the whole team. Baseball is a highly individual matchup. When a player is batting, it's a one on one matchup. It hard to blame your Manager if they underperformed. It would be bad management not to hold them accountable for their performance. One bad apple can ruin a department just as much as bad management.
  2. So you believe Dozier problem is lack of mentoring? And people still question Hunter 's value to the team last year. Nobody gets all the blame, but to say the players don't have responsibility is a joke.
  3. Who is more responsible for your work, your boss or you? I believe individual's have a lot more responsibility than you do. Look at Dozier comments today, if he can't see that he has a problem, no amount of coaching is going to change him. And I think every team would consider him a major league player. One year ago, he was an all star.
  4. How are the players not an option? The manager and FO can't take AB's for them, pitch for them, field for them or run the bases for them. They are paid professional that should be accountable for their actions on and off the field. A manager and FO are paid less than a reserve infielder, so laying all the blame on them seems to miss the point.
  5. The most impressive stat is Mauer's contact rate this year. It's at a career high which must be having a huge impact on his strike out reduction, reversing a 5 year trend. It never made a lot of sense that a contact player like Joe would have such a high strike out rate. It's good to see him get it back around 10%, which should get him back to a .300 hitter.
  6. Over the last 5+ years, I believe slugging percentage has actually been a better indication of runs scored than OBP. The game has changed and power is becoming what everyone is looking to get in the lineup. The top part of the lineup really needs Dozier to pick up his game. He had power, speed and he shown the ability to get on base. If he doesn't start hitting, he becomes a problem in the lineup.
  7. Even as a liberal, I am never surprised by the lack of accountability we hold our athletes to,see Aarons Hicks. If he doesn't hit,Twins fault for rushing him. If he does hit,I told you.
  8. That's the beauty of Mauer, every year he comes into camp in the "best shape of his life" but some way his off season conditioning is the reason for down years. He's going to make a great politician one of these days.
  9. Wouldn't that also explain the drop off from 2013 to 2014?
  10. Nobody should downplay concussion, but also nobody should make assumption about how serious a person concussion is or is not. If it's so bad, it's time to move on. If he continues to step on the field, let's not use it as an excuse. And since none of us know where he is on his concussion and he has gone back and forth on whether he has any symptoms, I'll just have to judge him on his on field performance.
  11. Today, it is true that he has played the most games as a catcher. But it's likely it will not be true when his career is over. I don't think draft position is going to be a factor in the HOF voting, nobody classifying Craig Biggio as catcher because he started his MLB career as a catcher. I think Mauer HOF problem is that they are going to look at his whole career, not just the catching part. I'm not trying to hate on Mauer and time will tell which one of us is right, but I don't see him getting 75% of the votes. Tony Oliva was a first ballot HOF talent who career was upended by injuries. Even if you believe concussions are the reason for Mauer's downward trend, I doubt they will factor that in considering he'll play at least 5 years after the concussions.
  12. How long do we consider Mauer a catcher? Is it fair to continue to compare him to catchers who caught twice as many games? Ernie Banks played more games as a shortstop and I don't think anyone is putting him in the top ten all-time shortstops. Why does Mauer get the special treatment? Also on the WAR, if you adjust it more to favor catchers, and Mauer is 50% catcher wouldn't you then have a negative adjustment for the other 50%? You would just end up back where you started. I think in trying to make the case for Mauer as a HOF, you have to ignore a lot of other questions. The HOF doesn't need to fill a team, just enshrine the greatest players. Mauer had a great start, but the finish isn't looking pretty and you can't just skip the part's that you don't like.
  13. Is 1981-1988 considered a long enough time? Fernando #1 And I don't think we can rewrite the 2006 MVP voting for the HOF. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=1988&month=0&season1=1981&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0
  14. I agree on Puckett, 2 World Series rings are a big plus for the HOF. Which I also think give the additional nod to Bill Dickey (8 rings) and Koufax for the HOF. The Fernando reference is to your general rule about being the best pitcher over 5 years and getting into the HOF. Santana doesn't have any big moments that voters are going to remember to vote him in, I don't think there is much of a chance he would get 75% of the voters. I think we'll be able to add Mauer to the outcry for Simmons and Freehan. Based on there vote totals, the outcry wasn't too loud.
  15. I'm a huge Santana fan, but he'll not going into the HOF. Koufax is a World Series hero which has a big impact voters and in a major market, big difference. Fernando Valenzula was a dominate pichers from 1981-85 and only lasted 2 years on the ballot. I think you need a longer run than 5-8 years of great regular season play to get into the hall. Mauer was a great catcher, but when you compare his career WAR to other catchers at the same level - Gene Tenace, Brian Downing, Ted Simmons, Bill Freehan - nobody's too upset than they didn't even make it to a second year on the HOF ballot. So to think Mauer is going to make it, seems to be a long shot.
  16. So not believing Mauer is a HOF player makes you a "Mauer-hater"? WAR should be the only measurement of players for HOF? And I get accused of coming out of the woodwork?
  17. Yes, in the Twins HOF, but not in MLB's
  18. According to fangraphs, from 2002 to 2008, the Twins bullpen was ranked 3rd. Relief pitchers are up and down, but looking at a longer time period, they have an overall excellent ranking. With relief pitching, I think going young is the best way. Develop your own talent and if you have to sign veterans, either be a star closer or 1 year contacts. Otherwise you are wasting roster space and money. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2008&month=0&season1=2002&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0
  19. I think you have to have Dozier in one of the top 2 positions. What he does best is score runs - his scoring % when on base in 2014 was 41% and 39% in 2015 (Mauer was 31% in 2014 and 27% in 2015). He has speed and he has shown the ability to be a high on base player. Then the question is if you believe Buxton is ready to be your leadoff hitter. If he is, than Mauer is your #3 hitter at best, if not then he your #2 hitter. But if he doesn't hit better than he did last year, I would drop him lower in the lineup.
  20. What Mauer has been doing well is hitting with runner on base, but not very well when the bases are empty. His OBP with nobody on in 2014 was .310 & in 2015 it was .284. Along with his lack of speed, he's better suited down in the order.
  21. This maybe more of a perception than reality, after the all-star break Dozier scored 34 runs (with an OBP of .280) and Mauer scored 31 runs (with an OBP of .341). One thing Dozier is very good at is producing runs. Like all players, it's a game of adjustments and Dozier will have to make some to continue to be productive. But I have confidence that he'll be able to make the necessary adjustments.
  22. Milone > Jessie Chaves ERA+ 2015 ERA+ Career Milone 106 99 Chavez 96 87 Chavez traded for Liam Hendriks - K/9 of 9.9 Even Milone had a k/9 in the bullpen of 18 and a save (okay it was only 1 inning, but.. . No chance they don't tender him. He has value, but I don't think they are shopping him.
  23. Milone = JA Happ, and he just signed for 3-$39, so he should have some trade value.
  24. The Twins have spent draft picks on college relief pitcher and then try to convert them to starter. Now they have a surplus of back of the rotation starter and lack relief pitching. It's time to start using those arms in the bullpen. Veteran relief pitchers end up being just as much as a gamble as the young players. So go young with your bullpen, use the money to fill other needs - maybe stop signing mid-level starter and go big on a front of the rotation starter.
  25. Agree, doesn't matter if it's 47% or 95%, it would be wrong. But since I'm not up for sainthood anytime soon, it's seems like after a very good career and the day after announcing his retirement, this probably isn't what this board should be about. And Bernadino had every right to ask the question the first time, but after the second and third time, you are kind of being a P_ _ _ _.
