    Baseball America just picked Seth Gray as one to watch. I looked back at some earlier TD articles and our folks mentioned him as well. Fourth round pick in 2019. Playing 3B for Cedar Rapids. He seems to be a ball magnet. He already has 3 HBP this year! I am not all that familiar with him but I thought I'd pass his name to you because I'm watching him. Cole Sands is my personal pick.

    A really fine interview, Seth. Glad you reposted. Looking forward to watching Larnach play at the major league level. Whether he starts fast or slow, he's going to be a good one in the long run.

    "2019 was an outlying year for Polanco as a left handed hitter." No. He had success in 2018 against RH pitchers as well. Polanco has had right ankle surgery each of the last two seasons. He may have developed some bad habits from compensation. He needs work from the left side, but certainly not enough for a 27 year old veteran to give up switch hitting.

    Thanks, Ted. Arraez and Sano are the perfect contrast in style. In an effort to stay positive, I'll comment only on Arraez. What a perfect *hitter* - takes the ball to all fields, rarely hits a dribbler, hasn't hit a pop-up since 2019, and has exquisite patience. Now, he seems to be hunting pitches to drive when he sees an opportunity. He's a beauty.

    Excellent piece, Steve. Celestino, Sands and Cano are definitely on my list to follow this year. There are two unlisted prospects I'm curious about: Winder - whom I enjoyed watching in ST; and Miranda, who has definitely filled in and looks like he can hit. I'm also rooting for Gordon to have a full, healthy season. He's been through a lot.

    I agree. This question should get traction if the Twins hitters start the season as poorly as they performed last year.

    Colina will probably be fine. He pitched a grand total of one-third inning last year. Beyond that, I believe Canterino will be called up if back-end relievers are injured. He will be stretched out in the minors, but I don't think the FO will hesitate if we lose key relievers for more than a few weeks. He has better command than all of the RP mentioned except maybe Law.

    Sign Buxton now. He just turned 27 years old. His game isn't based only on speed. The past two seasons, his isolated power (SLG-AVG) was .274. That would've ranked 11th in the majors if he could've stayed on the field. Of course, staying on the field is his biggest problem. In 2021, he played 39 of the first 53 games. He missed 10 days with an injured shoulder. He missed the last 7 games because he got hit in the head. Still, He was: The second-most valuable position player on the Twins by fWAR and the most valuable by rWAR.The leading CF in the major leagues by Defensive Runs Saved (DRS).He's a difference maker. I bet he reaches 400+ PA per year across the next 4 seasons. That's enough to make him a top 50 player in MLB, at a premium position. BTW, the other top defensive CF the past two years? Lorenzo Cain (34 yrs old) and Kevin Keirmaier (30 yrs old). Buxton will play CF for several more years. Offer him 4/$52M or 5/$68M. Give him a $3M bonus this year, then $12M and 2 or 3 years @$16M.

Do the opposite if you like betting and not losing money." I pretty much agree. I think I'd avoid betting on Sano either way. I'd take the over on Kirilloff.

    I'm so happy for Thorpe. I was worried about his mental and emotional health. He seems to be finding his bearings. A side benefit seems to be we're going to see him at his best on the mound.

    Pitchers like Musgrove - at his salary - don't come along all that often. The FO obviously knows better about the players and the proposed trade terms. In general, I have no problem trading a potential star corner OF for a young, above-average SP at this point. You trade from excess for areas of need.

    I want players to work on their game. But Buxton has been through a lot, both with injuries and adjustments. He's averaged 250 PA per year in the majors, yet he's hit for a ton of power the last two years. Work on better pitch recognition but let the guy be comfortable and hope he stays healthy.

    I love the depth. Not every prospect turns out great, but when you have a handful of prospects, something good is going to happen. A couple of these guys are going to be solid or better starters for several years.

    Arraez will get a little time in LF but he is the only 2B/SS/3B option on the bench! All three starters have had chronic, nagging injuries the past two years. I'm surprised the Twins haven't added a 2nd utility player. Gonzalez and Adrianza were both needed in the IF many times the past two years.

    Nice writeup. The AL Central is strong at catcher. My order is definitely different: Sox (A) - Grandal is the best AL catcher and he's resilient. Twins (A-) - Best combo in the AL when considering their success as starters. Gallagher and Collins might have promise but they're not proven. Royals (A-) - Perez is coming off a career year with the bat. I put the Royals combo a fraction behind the Twins. I wouldn't trade Garver and Jeffers for the Royals pair. Cleveland (B+) - Solid defense for a team that relies on pitching. Tigers © - Ok. Ramos was a good veteran acquisition.

    This Twitter link shows Canterino throwing another fastball at 97 with no pirouette. I hope he can manage 93-95 as a starter. That's plenty if his off-speed stuff is good.

    He has a little Scherzer in him. Most of the rankings have him moving up. Looking forward to watching him this season.

    I think Price would be available in a normal year but probably not in 2021. Covid-19 is still a roster concern - at least for the 1st part of the season - and pitchers had limited 2020 innings. With San Diego in the same division, I doubt they are looking to move a SP. That being said, how about a big trade with the Dodgers? Just for fun... Twins get: Tony Gonsolin - SP (I'm very high on him. 6 yrs control) Gavin Lux - IF (Former top 3 prospect. Had some yips throwing from 2B last year) Dodgers get: Jorge Polanco - IF Trevor Larnach - OF Jhoan Duran - SP The most serious MLB contender to LA are the SD Padres so I don't think they are looking for long-term prospects. The Dodgers will need immediate roster help to make a trade. Polanco would be a great fit for them, moving Taylor back to a super utility player. They are short in OF depth, with Luke Raley as their top AAA option. Larnach is a serious upgrade and is ready for MLB. Duran would be 2021 bullpen insurance with a chance to start in the future. The Twins would get a SP with serious upside who has proven MLB success (86.2 IP/ 2.60 ERA / 3.02 FIP). Lux gives them 6 years of 2B/SS/LF and he's only 23 years old. He has struggled in limited AB but IMO, he will hit if given the chance. I'd do it.

    Twins +185 and ChiSox at -140 to win the Central at Bovada? That's a little better than 5/2 odds for the Twins as a direct bet. I'll take that proffer on the Twins side. I'm willing to discuss that wager with anyone who thinks that's a good Chicago bet. Winnings to a preferred non-profit.

    Daniel Murphy was a very professional hitter. My respects. On to the big one... Eddie to the Cleveland Spiders! I'm happy for him. With Kirilloff coming, it was the right move for the Twins. Still, I think they are going to pay for this one. He evened out his K/BB ratio last year. If he maintains the better judgement he found last year and refinds his loose swing, he's going to be dangerous. PS - I thought he would stay in the Central but I had him going to the White Sox.

    I remember back when I was just a little kid. The Twins traded Jim Merritt to the Reds for an older SS named Leo Cardenas. He immediately became one of my favorites. Leo had a great 1969 and an above-average 1970. Five decades later, I'm hoping for a repeat performance from a defense-first SS. PS - Merritt was extremely good for the Reds too,

    I agree with the first part of your comment - adequate and not my top choice. But he is a significant improvement. Gonzalez and Adrianza were awful last season. They produced 0.1 WAR while chewing up 300 PA in 60 games. Simmons should be a 2-win improvement on his own.

    Bryant played with a bad wrist and back last year, with an IL stint in the middle of the season. If he's healthy, he's still an all-star caliber player. There are two problems with a Bryant trade: His current health and the Cubs asking price. If the cost is Rooker and a couple of lower-ranked prospects, I'd do it. A bigger trade with the Cubs might be fun too. Add in Javier Baez, who also had a down year last year. A year with Berrios might get him back on track. With both of them, the Twins would upgrade their defense and have a ton of flexibility. I'd only make this trade if it didn't include any of the top 6 or 7 Twins prospects. That's reasonable since the Twins would only get one season of each of them. Maybe Rooker, Urbina, Sands/Enlow and Rortvedt? (The Cubs might want Canterino instead of Sands or Enlow.) The Cubs farm system is near empty right now. Urbina gives them upside and Rooker provides some power. Losing Canterino would hurt but still might be worth it. The AL doesn't look that strong for 2021. Baez and Bryant would give the Twins a chance.
