    drjim - I will buy you a bottle of scotch, JW Red, if Hendriks and Gibson both don't find themselves in the rotation this year. I think it was Nick who wrote a nice piece about how all our SPs have either serious health issues or will probably regress. I agree. The door will be open from AAA to the MLB club all year. In fact, it will be wide open most of the year I'd guess.

    I did follow the conversation. You and Jokin both say the he might choose not to sign. All I'm naively asking is why given that he'd lose out on signing bonus money. It doesn't make sense to me, but since you say he might, I thought maybe you had a reason why he'd do that. I'm granting the fact that I may be missing something here that would make him not signing a option worthing of considering. But, from what I understand there isn't.

    I don't know, he might not post more than 2 WAR, and since that won't by itself make us competitive this year, that would be spending money foolishly.

    Why would he not sign when drafted this year? If it doesn't wouldn't he be missing out on millions by signing to the team that drafted him (in signing bonus)? If he doesn't sign, doesn't that bonus money go away? I don't understand the leverage Appel would have or the motivation to not sign as high as possible this year.

    Fair enough, but it's not like all the info we have on these guys is constrained to these 2012 ABs. We have track records (major and minor league stats) -- extensive -- that strain credulity that Florimon and Dozier will ever become more than replacement players. Of course there is always the possibility that one may make a miraculous leap, but that's not a good enough reason to keep playing them and refuse to upgrade. Hell, it's possible that I make a miraculous leap and move my fastball from mid 80s to high 90s. Put me in or we'll never know

    League min. is 480,00. Correia will make 5 million. Those numbers are not close where I come from.

    You've got to give him about 25/year to bring payroll up to ~100 million, of course.

    Didn't we see plenty of Dozier, and enough of Florimon and Plouffe last year to know roughly what they are capable of? Also, we say plenty of Carroll at 2B at the end of last year when we should have seen if Dozier was any better at 2B, or hell, even give Mastro a shot there like many on this board were clamoring for.

    Indeed, the comparison is quite loose. Not impossible to compare, but silly to do so. There are many things, accidental to human nature, which are not a choice. Height, would be an example. Odd number of hairs also. And yes, these are not just like or properly comparable to discrimination based on color.
