Very thought provoking stuff, though I'm not sure how much PEDs were extending careers. I'm also not sure how much can be placed on college baseball. It may have become popular, but it also enabled players to come to MLB with more advanced skills which, in turn, enabled them move faster through a team's system. I personally think the correct answer is MONEY. If you go back and look at the transactions teams were making then, compared to now, through a lens of cost versus value, I think you will get a much clearer picture of what really forced ages up and down. The average age will go back up when arbitration forces youth's salaries past the point where they stop being a cost effective alternative.

I was a big believer in Hicks. I still think he has the potential to get it together - though the longer we wait, the less likely that will be. More than anything, I will miss an outfield of Rosario, Buxton and Hicks. We didn't get to see that trio too often this season, but when we did is was pretty damn impressive. Nothing dropped in for a hit. For that, I feel nothing but remorse. Now, when I think on back on the deal and events over the past season, a couple of things keep popping up in my mind. The Yankees tried to do this trade earlier during the season, but Ryan said no. After the season, Ryan suddenly had a change of heart and made the trade. Hicks hit a little better before having one stellar month, then finished the season in a slump. Posters throw all kinds of numbers and stats around on here, but the one thing they don't have is unfettered access to the players. On a daily basis, Ryan and the coaches see the player's approach, their work ethic and attitudes. In other words, they get to see all the flaws that numbers alone miss. The more I think about this trade, the more I think Ryan was dumping Hicks as much (maybe even more) than he was acquiring a catcher. I think the trade was initially fair for both sides, but will become more lopsided in favor of Ryan and the Twins as time goes by. Especially, if Hicks doesn't hit right away. That obnoxious fan base and the New York media circus will eat him alive.

Article: How Brett Lawrie's Trade Altered My Thinking
sploorp replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
And Mays makes 8. Don't forget about Mays. I think Mays should swap with Nolasco. Mays has earned a spot in the rotation. Let Nolasco prove that he can handle some multi inning relief appearances before letting him start again. -
Article: How Brett Lawrie's Trade Altered My Thinking
sploorp replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Excellent post! Even though I didn't quote the whole thing (I just wanted enough to spark readers minds), I agree every word - except the part about Jason Tyner. Nobody should have to remember the Tyner. Ever. -
Article: Shields For Nolasco: Would You Do It?
sploorp replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I keep running into discussions about this and there is apparently people out there that think this is actually a good idea. Could one of those people please explain to me how this would be any different than giving Nolasco a raise and an extension? No! No no no no no no no no no no noooooooo!! A thousand times no!- 108 replies

Once a team has one of its players picked, do they get to protect additional players or is that only in expansion?

Does anybody know what Park makes in Korea?
sploorp replied to huhguy's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Excellent article and comments. Twins fans should definitely check it out. -
Power is power. You can either hit 'em out or you can't. The guy hit 140 homers over the past three seasons. He also batted .343 in spite of all the strike outs. Has anybody ever put up those kind of numbers, then been a complete bust when they get to MLB? I think the guy will do just fine and fans will be very happy with the signing.

Article: THANK YOU From Twins Daily!
sploorp replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The real thanks goes everybody at Twins Daily for consistently putting up interesting and thought provoking sports writing day after day. It's not easy and I really do appreciate it. I don't post much, but that's because I'm usually sneaking on at work while the boss is out of the room. I read just about everything and will often times double back to older articles to see if there are any new posts in the comments sections. If they ever put a security camera in the room where it can get a clear shot of my screen, I'm toast. Thanks again everybody! -
MLB Rumors: A lot of interest in Plouffe

I was completely unaware that Freese was on the market. Is that just speculation or has there been actual attempts at a trade?- 146 replies

MLB Rumors: A lot of interest in Plouffe
sploorp replied to HitInAPinch's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Near as I can tell, Plouffe is the best 3rd base option out there. Teams may go into discussions thinking the Twins are don't wanter sellers, but that could change real quick once offers start getting made. Without any real viable alternatives out there, teams have nothing to leverage a Twins counter offer back down with. I don't see any team doing anything too lopsided, but the Twins should do well. I think the team is going to be very busy during the owner's meetings, not just with Plouffe, but with some of the pitching too. Hopefully, we have a few nice new pieces once the smoke clears. The team is also in a much better position to attract free agents as well. I know they've been kicking the tires on Soria and there might be others that I haven't heard about as well.- 146 replies

Great ariticle! I was especially intrigued by the part about the team having two cores. I don't know how much to read into it, but it's sure going to be a fun 8-10 years watching that core slowly become the old core.

But those injuries always seem to happen every year and a few of those younger arms always seem to get their chance. The players that are closest to being ready will all get their chance, it's just a matter of when they come up and how long they stay for.

The Front Office and Settling For Mediocrity
sploorp replied to DaveW's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
That's actually an interesting idea. A moot point now, but I would have been interested to see how something like that worked out. -
He's guaranteed that money no matter what happens. By the end of this deal, Mauer will be past his prime. Most of players would look at a deal like Mauer's as nearly all of the money they will ever make as a baseball player. There is just no way any player walks away or renegotiates a retirement.

Santana in CF and Sano in RF sounds icky. And it means you have to sign another OF capable of playing CF. Shane Robinson, anyone.

Article: Gambling On The Relief Market: Simply Folly
sploorp replied to jorgenswest's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I completely agree with that. The best relievers aren't drafted or bought, they're converted from the current starter corp. I would definitely try Nolasco in the pen. Maybe they still can get at least a little bit of return on his contract. -
Article: Do The Twins Need To Acquire An Ace?
sploorp replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Acquiring an ace in the off season with the idea of making it to the post season is like buying lottery tickets thinking it's going to make you rich. The most likely scenario for both is you're going to spend a lot of money and end up disappointed. I like the way the staff is coming along. I also think it's going to get better with experience, an improving defense and a better bullpen. And let's not forget some of the arms in the pipeline ready to make a splash. If the team finds itself in the thick of things and seems like it's postseason bound an ace makes much more sense. There will undoubtedly be plenty of teams looking to dump salary and a trade should be much more feasible without giving away the house. Can we go back to worrying about catcher and the bullpen, please?- 39 replies

Article: Trevor May Is Thriving In The Bullpen
sploorp replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I could never understand why the front office drafts relievers when all the team's successful bullpen guys have been converted starters. There must be some starters they have their doubts about that they could try out in the pen. Just a few? Nolasco is the one who can't seem to put up innings. Put him in the bullpen and see if we can get at least a little value from him. Maybe he can get a bit more velocity AND make it through a whole season without getting hurt. That's a lot of money to pay for a bullpen arm, but it's even more to pay for a starter who can't get batters out. On that note, I wouldn't mind them resigning Pelfry if I knew for certain they were going to put him in the bullpen and keep him there. It seems like he looks pretty decent until the second or third time through the order. A bullpen gig might start looking pretty good in February if he still hasn't signed with anybody. -
Article: Twins Acquire LHP Neal Cotts from Brewers
sploorp replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They won't have to go 27-13. They are only 2 1/2 games behind the Angels and play a three game series with them at Target field. All they have to do is kick the crap out of the Angels at Target Field and play decent ball in the others. -
Article: Let's Talk About Tyler Duffey's Curveball
sploorp replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Why not start promoting some of that surplus to the bullpen? It can use all the help it can get. I would even be okay with the team resigning Pelfry if I knew with 100% certainty that he would be a permanent bullpen guy. -
Article: Twins Kick Baltimore Tires
sploorp replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like O'Day better than Wieters, but would be open to either or both. I wouldn't give up Arcia, especially not now when his value is so low. As fans I think we tend to value picks a lot more than most MLB teams, so I don't think it would take nearly as much to get them as we might think. A few mid-level prospects close to the majors might be all it takes. -
Article: What's A Realistic Timeline For Byron Buxton?
sploorp replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is nothing ridiculous about it. They gave the guy every chance to succeed. They traded Span and then Revere to make room for him. I think Hicks will be back at some point, but not anytime soon. Buxton is the Twins guy now. I think Buxton makes his debut before Hicks gets another chance.
