  1. It seems interesting to me that there have already been a couple of instances this year of Twins players not hustling on the basepaths. Maybe Rocco needs to find better balance in his relationships with players.
  2. No, you have me confused with someone else.
  3. Sure, but there's no metric for command. We can only assume for the most part where he wanted pitches to end up. Maybe he only had control, but not command today. Or maybe he did have command, but the Tigers just put some good swings on the ball. Or maybe he did have command, but his stuff isn't good enough anymore now that there's a fairly substantial book on him, and these types of outings will be more common.
  4. Randy threw 32 of his 52 pitches for strikes, which is 61.5%. For his career, he's thrown 764 of his 1,178 pitches for strikes, which is 64.5%. Not really that far off, and if the margin of error for Dobnak is 3 balls per 100, that $9M will be a (very minor) waste.
  5. This is basically a synopsis of me. I think I'll probably make it my headline on LinkedIn.
  6. I find it ironic that since the Twins instituted a focus on rest in order to maintain health, they seem to be more injury prone than ever.
  7. I think the 10th should be normal, the 11th with a runner on first, 12th on second, 13th on third, 14th on first and second, 15th on first and third, 16th on second and third, and 17th loaded. If there's no winner after 17, it's a tie and we all move on.
  8. It's a completely logical rule. To record an out, a defender must control the baseball, and in some cases, also either tag a runner or touch a base. On a dropped/passed third strike, the defender (in this case the catcher), did not control the ball, therefore no out is recorded.
  9. early season Fun with Numbers--Brent Rooker's first pitch strike percentage is 150%.
  10. Miguel Sano's career o-swing rate is right in line with league average over the last 3 years (around 30%). His issue is not with plate discipline, it is with making contact (16.2% swinging strike rate, compared to the league average of 11-ish). Rooker, in his extremely SSS career swings at 37% of pitches out of the zone, with a 13.7% swinging strike rate. You can be an effective big leaguer with holes in your swing, or with bad plate discipline, but not both.
  11. Robbie Grossman has an average of .000, but an OBP of .615. That is insane.
  12. If Rooker can't stop himself from doing things like that, he will not have a very long career.
  13. This is true. Colome should be able to go one inning, giving up 2 or less runs. My frustration comes from the assumption that because the 6th inning is potentially the highest leverage situation in the game, it should be treated as such. Some times it will be, often times it won't be. Not an assumption you were making, but other posters were.
  14. It's not though. If the criteria for determining if the best bullpen guys "did their job" is that they have to collectively pitch to a sub-2 ERA, we're setting ourselves up to be disappointed. We had 3 runs in after 5, meaning we had 4 more innings to tack on; if Baldelli doesn't think our offense is capable of putting up a run every other inning, on average, than we have much bigger problems than the bullpen. My thought then, is that assuming you needed to run your best guys out there, consecutively, for 4 straight innings just to get to the ninth, is a mistake, and is akin to trying to win a marathon by being in front after the first 100 meters.
  15. A few thoughts; I get not bringing in Dobnak in the 5th, with a couple on (although with those two at first and second, a groundball pitcher who can hopefully get you a DP ball seems like a good idea). What I don't get is not bringing him in to start the 6th and get you an inning or two. If Rocco is going to use up his best options in the 5th and 6th of every game we're up by one or down by one, we're going to have a gassed bullpen by June. At some point, your "lesser" options have to do more than eat innings in blowouts, and if the organization doesn't trust them to do that, they shouldn't be rostered. I have to disagree with the whole "if the best pitchers do their job, you wouldn't need extras" argument. Yesterday, the Twins bullpen before Colome gave up 0 runs in 3.2 IP. If they give up one run in that stretch instead, and Buxton doesn't hit his homer, it still goes to extras, with the pen x Colome posting an ERA of 2.45 for the day, which would be the best bullpen ERA in the entire league for any of the past 5 years.
  16. As was previously mentioned, Kyle Gibson, with a 5-0 lead, got exactly one out in the bottom of the first, while giving up 4 hits and 3 walks. His ERA is 135, and his WHIP is 21.
  17. Maybe we should have saved Rogers for the actual high leverage situation.
  18. That's fine and all, I'm just saying you can't know when the highest leverage situations will be, only where they were. So it makes far more sense to put your pitchers in the situations where they are most likely to succeed, as Rocco did with Rogers (2 out of 3 due up in his inning were lefties).
  19. Sure, other than there is no way to know until after the game when that is...
  20. It was Marnie, summarizing her conversation with Baldelli, who confirmed that Bell's strong belief Arraez should lead-off was a big factor in Baldelli making that decision.
  21. Rocco Baldelli needed Mike Bell to help him understand that batting a high average, high OBP, good plate discipline guy like Arraez leadoff is a good idea? Maybe Rocco's not so smart about baseball...
  22. Sano has always had very good plate discipline. The strikeouts are a result of lower bat to ball skills, not some inability to decipher the strike zone.
