  1. I like Ron Gardenhire, too. But I think Terry Francona could turn this team around.
  2. The frustrating thing about Wimmers is that he took the rehab route with a partial ligament tear. I don't have the stats on the success rate of that approach, but I don't recall hearing about it working. Doesn't that eventually wind up requiring TJ surgery down the road? If he wasn't a pitcher, it wouldn't matter, but the stress on that ligament from pitching appears to destroy anything but a healthy one, or one that has been surgically repaired. I hope I'm wrong about this. Maybe Wimmers' ligament will heal. But will the healed portion be healthy tissue, or inflexible scar tissue? Pitch with rhythm and use your legs, Mr. Wimmers. Maybe you'll get lucky.
  3. A little gem from Wikipedia: "In 2002, the Twins sent Santana to the minors for 2 months to work almost exclusively on perfecting his changeup. He did this for 10 starts and came back up to the majors with a terrific changeup to complement his very good fastball. While in the minors, pitching coach Bobby Cuellar made Santana throw at least one changeup to every batter. According to Cuellar, Santana would sometimes throw 20 in a row during games." Bobby Cuellar, y'all! Give him a pitcher that's willing to learn, and watch what happens.
  4. Man, is that true. I don't know why it keeps happening, but the Twins will trade a star player for a bunch of average prospects, somehow thinking that a large number of place fillers equals a difference maker. It's like saying ten phone books equals one great novel.
  5. A well-targeted package deal needs only one team as a partner. Also, you can offer a Liriano + Span deal at the same time that you market both players separately. If one of them goes, then you still have some value for the other. The package deal is out there as an option, and the team that would go for it would probably contact Terry Ryan on their own fairly early, before the opportunity disappears. At the same time, I'd hate to see them both go. Span is such a solid player, and Liriano is getting better. I'm dismissing his latest outing as tension from all the trade rumors.
  6. Don't kill the massager. Sorry, had to say it. So hard to find a good masseuse these days. They're all looking for sex!

  8. Pro sports is like musical chairs, the game show. Denard should realize that, along with every other player. Play hard, and then hope you get to sit with a good team for awhile, and make some money.
  9. Do you think we could get the great Mark Buehrle for a mere minor leaguer like Miguel Sano? Wow, what a deal! If Terry Ryan could swing this deal, he'd be as universally loved as...Mike Lynn!
  10. I bought a Cuddyer jersey a couple years ago because I admired the guy and thought he'd be a Twin his whole career. What am I gonna do with my Lirano jersey in a couple weeks? From now on I'm only buying jerseys of retired players.
  11. It is absolutely impossible to predict any starter for 2013 except Scott Diamond. If Frankie Liriano is still around, but that's a complete coin flip. If Cole De Vries pitches well in his next start, then his odds go up a lot. If Samuel Deduno stops walking batters just before giving up a home run, or throwing wildly to first and home, then his odds go up. He's got talent. If Liam Hendriks develops better damage control, then he's in. If Brian Duensing gets his tight snap back, he'd be fine. From there, the odds go down fast. Both Duensing and Swarzak have worked better out of the bull pen. Gray might be a possibility... I was high on Bromberg before the broken arm... Gibson might still make it next year... Wimmers will probably wind up with TJ surgery (ain't it the way?)... Walters looked strictly marginal. Spring training will be another cattle call. That's the one thing we can be sure of.
  12. Excuse me, I have to go put a plastic bag on my head now...
  13. Once you've had baseballs delivered by a pig, you've got the right attitude to pitch in the bigs.
  14. I would still trade Capps back to the Nationals for Ramos and his bad knee. Easier to find a closer than a good catcher that can hit.
  15. Brian Duensing was doing something subtly wrong with his delivery today. You've all heard of the "chicken wing" move that you do with your glove side elbow? Well, Duensing's chicken wing was loose, not tucked in tight enough. Might seem minor, but letting his glove hand fall away just a little bit resulted in a slower rotation of the scapula, leaving his release point late and subtracting rotations from his spin. Ball rode up high, and hitters had a real fun time smacking his nothing pitches over the fence. Tuck in that chicken wing tight, Mr. Duensing. Get that good snap. That'll bring the ball down, add a couple mph and a few more rpm to the spin.
  16. I would trade Capps back to the Nationals for Ramos and his torn up knee. Capps is a nice guy, but he still seems to lack a serious repertoire of effective pitches, and if his off-speed stuff is missing, he resorts to the world's most hittable 93mph BP fastball. Blackburn used to be one of my favorites, but now he seems held together by athletic tape. I'd trade him for a promising youngster in A ball. Liriano is exactly at his peak trade value, right this moment. A contending team could use him as a 3rd or 4th starter and possibly pile up some wins. Agreed that he could go to a big budget club and use the second half as tryout for a big contract next year. Span is a prototypical Twins outfielder, developed slowly and deliberately to maximize his potential. He's a solid major league player, and should command top price. His greatest value would be on a team like the Yankees, where he could play right field with Granderson in center. That pair would prevent a lot of balls from landing, and they'd score a ton of runs at the top of the lineup.
  17. Whew, finally some good news on the Joe Benson front. I hope the wrist is healed up and he can start his push back up the ladder.
  18. On Base Percentage: Denard Span: .334 Ben Revere: .350 Joe Mauer: .416 I think Revere's doing pretty well.
  19. About Brian Dozier... "He's actually been better lately, with a .321 average in July, but his plate discipline and defense remain suspect and absolutely must improve." Wait what? He batted .321 in July, but his plate discipline is suspect? What must a man do to allay these suspicions? Even if a guy jumps up and down waving the bat wildly, if he bats .321 he's doing pretty well. And his defense...seldom do we see rookies come up with a completely polished defensive game. They tend to be erratic, but along with the silly goofs, the good ones make exciting plays, as Dozier's been doing. Dozier appears to be a cross between a young Nick Punto and a young Dustin Pedroia. The more Pedroia the better, of course, but even if he's more of a Punto, that's still a pretty good ball player. Clearly Dozier's got more pop than Punto, so I'm looking forward to seeing some very good ball from this guy.
  20. Bonus: The Cole De Vries train. Does De Vries have a chance to continue putting up quality starts when so many people think his stuff just isn't that good? A nuthin' fastball, a big, slow overhand curve, a little this a little that. How does he do it? Can he keep doing it? What if he does? If Cole De Vries wins more games than any other starter, will the Twins still send him down to AAA? Bonus #2: Can Drew Butera throw a knuckle ball?
  21. Sorry, on what planet does Torii Hunter return to a Twins uniform with Revere, Benson, Hicks, Arcia and various other cheap, young, talented players coming up or already on the roster? The only reason Hunter would even consider such a move would be if the Twins were just one player from making a serious run at the World Series. Wrong planet, wrong dimension. Please adjust your television set.
  22. Aaron Hicks has the same kind of speed as Denard Span, plus a considerably better arm. Probably not as high an average, but more pop in his bat, and he's a switch hitter. The Twins look pretty stacked near term in the outfield with guys like Hicks, Benson, Arcia and Buxton coming up in the next few years. Should be interesting.
  23. Holland stepped a long way towards home plate. Big time balk.
  24. Morneau's 1st-inning battle with lefty Martin Perez was a classic. Justin clearly was struggling to keep his butt from leaning away from the plate, and over about eight pitches, he finally won the battle and stroked a solid single off one of Perez's sweeping curve balls. Ron Coomer said it later, that Morneau's victory against the left hander enabled him to blast a line-drive homer against the right hander later in the game, a shot he crushed as hard as I've ever seen him hit a baseball. This could be a turning point for Morneau. If he keeps his butt in the batter's box, he can regain his old form and start dominating this league the way he used to.
