  1. I would tend to agree. At the moment a top of the rotation pitcher is presenting itself. When you have the chance to add elite talent at the major league level you do that if you can. This is the opportunity. If they pull it off you’re gonna be mad that he’s not a hitter? We know Cease is a good major league pitcher. Those 3 prospects have no guarantee they’ll ever even make it to the majors let alone provide any value. Cease could get hurt day one. There’s no guarantees but I’d rather take a chance to get a playoff caliber starter for one year than to continually kick the star prospect can down the road. They’re gonna be extremely lucky if one of those 3 prospects even has an above average MLB career let alone all 3. I’m averse to prospects after watching 20 years of Terry Ryan hold onto prospects when he could’ve gone out and got something to supplement the 2000’s twins teams. Sano was supposed to be the next David Ortiz, Buxton was supposed to be the next Griffey, Kyle Gibson was the next Twins ace, Jason Kubel was the next big star. Those guys never came close to that despite the hype. Prospects are just that. Hype. I’d rather help the team now than wait for a super team in 5 years. Cause I’ve been waiting for that super team of prospects for 25 years.
  2. I don’t think SD wants a pitcher in return but this thinking exactly!!! How many times did we watch Terry Ryan sit on his hands and not trade prospects only for those guys to flame out or only develop into marginal players. This is what everyone here wants. The big off-season swing to bring in a difference maker. A difference maker costs you top prospects though.
  3. That thinking is exactly right. You gotta know they’re asking for the top 3. They’ll never budge on Jenkins cause he’s a legit star but Emma and Keaschall have them thinking. That’s a killer starting 5. Pablo, Cease, Ryan, Ober, SWR/Festa with Mathew’s waiting in the wings. That’s a legit playoff rotation!
  4. This would be a great trade if we were playing OOTP baseball! Other than that it’s a fantasy.
  5. But do Pittsburgh and Seattle have a need for a $10M catcher? Or… a $7.5M pitcher as well? The answer is no. The padres need a catcher. They probably need a swing arm like Paddack for depth. The padres would like a corner OF. The Padres are not looking to take on lots of salary. The padres top 20 is full of pitchers who will be ready soon. The padres will not resign Dylan Cease. Vazquez provides a catcher. Paddack provides depth if/until Musgrove is back and also helps bridge the gap to the bevy of young pitchers coming through. In a Vázquez and Paddack for Cease trade the padres take on roughly $3.75M. That trade doesn’t match up talent wise or money wise so in return the padres would want one of 2 things. They would want A) the twins to pay down that $17.5M that they’re incurring so that they could sign an OF or another pitcher or B) include one of Emma or Keaschall to balance this trade. The talks have slowed because the Twins probably don’t want to do any of those but in order to get Cease that’s what needs to happen. We assume they won’t pay down the contracts so does Cease provide enough value this year to justify one of those 2 prospects. That is really the question. Does that value of having a top of the rotation guy for one year justify trading a top 100 prospect? I think it’s the best scenario you get in trading Paddack and Vazquez. Gotta give something to get something.
  6. It’s not gonna be Ryan or Ober for one year of Cease. One has to assume that the Twins front office is not completely inept. Remember, these anre professional FO people. Not the computer on MLB the show. Also, the Padres don’t want salary. They want a high end prospect or salary relief. That’s the M.O. in a trade like this. They need a starting catcher, a LF and a SP. Talks have slowed cause they want what the twins don’t want to give up. Money or a high end prospect. I’m guessing either Emma or Keaschall.
  7. I think one of Emma or Keaschall is the lynchpin here unless they’re looking to add more pitching. Their top 30 is littered with pitching that will be ready in 1 or 2 years if not this year. Vazquez, Paddack and a top 10 prospect for Cease is probably the asking price. If talks have slowed the Padres either want salary relief or a higher end prospect is my guess. If it’s one prospect and it isn’t Jenkins, which I don’t believe it would be, I’d pull the trigger. Cease would immediately put the Twins in the top 5 rotations in baseball. Got be willing to give something to get something.
  8. Dude was also playing high A ball starting the year. He fared well somewhat but he was tired. Was way over his previous max innings for a season. There was bound to be a blow up at some point. I think you keep Paddack at this point. You’re not getting anything in a trade and they’re not getting any more value than him with the money if they even use it. Keep him and see what happens. He’s depth if nothing else until the injury bug bites again.
  9. I agree with him in the bullpen. At this point of his career he’s never proven he can make it through a full season. Maybe he lengthens his career moving to the BP. He was lights out a few years ago. I think it’s a win-win for him and the team.
  10. You trade him and get what in the trade and with that money? If the Twins actually do something with that money that is. What do you get with at most $7.5M at this point of the off-season that improves the team more than your sub 4 ERA and 130 innings?
  11. Exactly, this is why I think it might be ok to just roll this roster back again without any major moves. They’ve added a few pieces on the edges. There’ll be a few more prospects just a phone call away that are ready. A little bit more depth just based on being closer to the majors and a bit more improved. It might be a good move to not do anything drastic. If they’re ok with Vazquez as the catcher maybe that’s good. If they want to give Paddack another try then why not. If they want to plug Castro in around the field I think that’s positive. I’ll trust the guys that see these guys day in day out. They still have the potential to be a really good team. If they fall flat on their faces I’ll be at the front of the line asking questions. Right here on Twins Daily lol!
  12. The average fan comes with winning. The Twins Daily fan scrutinizes the team because they’re not winning enough, or not winning the right way or winning too much. “Joe Mauers a bum!” “Fire Rocco!” “Derek Falvey has never made a good trade!” “If the cheap Pohlads would just give an unlimited budget they could sign all the good free agents!” The average fan is pretty reasonable. Twins Daily fans will never be reasonable. We know too much lol! We want the name. The name means we’re relevant on the national stage. The name means we’re not just the lowly little Twins. The name means we get a chair with the big boys. The name means we’ve got another person to blame for the shortcomings and a name to brag about in the highlights. If we get the name it means that all the people on the team did what we think is good to get the name regardless of the name ever doing anything meaningful for the team. People come see the team to watch the name. It’s all about the name.
  13. Fans want big trades where the Twins seemingly win the trade just by the name. Fans want big FA signings based on a name. Maybe the people who get paid lots of money to make these decisions seen the situation and rather than making trades and eating money here and including this guy to save a million there just to get one guy here. Maybe it was more effective to just make moves on the fringes and roll this roster back. Logic tells me that makes more sense than making moves just to appease fans based on the names. Let’s be honest. If they traded 3 guys to save $12M what are they getting for $12M that replaces those guys and even marginally improves this team.
  14. Agreed. What if the Twins do what many thought at the beginning of the offseason and simply ran everything back again in 25? Does it really look like such a bad thing at this point? I mean, it’s not what was expected but after adding a little more depth it doesn’t seem all bad. The royals haven’t added much. Cleveland wildly subtracted. Detroit has added Torres and looking to add maybe Bregman or Santander but we’ll see. I believe the Twins have more depth than last year. More upside and better pitching than the rest of the central.
  15. It is terrible, it’s terrible that the Bay Area can’t support 2 teams. It’s terrible that the team either had to resort to a public funded stadium or nothing at all. It’s terrible that MLB forced this to be resolved the way they did. But that’s the nature of everything going on. It’s big business and the A’s need to help contribute to MLB’s cash cow. It’s never been about the fans. It’s always been about profits and losses
  16. The job was Julian’s last year until he fell flat on his face. The big question is what the hell happened there? Forget finding a prospect for the spot. The guy showed incredible numbers and upside and then just completely fell off a cliff. The talent is still there. Was the old hitting regime trying to do an Austin Martin on him and try to find more power? Messing with his swing/approach to squeeze 2 or 3 more HR’s a year out of him? Seems to be their MO.
  17. Exactly, the only two guys forcing anything are Jenkins and Rodriguez. That’s if they’re completely destroying AAA. There’s a long depth line at 2B.
  18. The A’s were forced to move. Once the city and state refused to fund a stadium they had to look to another city or they would see a reduced revenue sharing cost per the last CBA. It’s stated right in the document. Why do you think they’re spending money now? Cause they have to get above the minimum floor and there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
  19. Even if they can consistently stay middle of the pack as far as payroll like where they were 2 years ago that’s all I want. Just the ability to sign your young guys and a bigger name every 4-6 years instead of having to turn over a new roster is key. Having the ability to supplant a roster with 1-2 guys every offseason and not be completely hamstrung at the trade deadline will help immensely. They’ll never be the Yankees or dodgers but they can beat those teams consistently by simply not being the A’s as far as payrolls go. I think that’s all anybody really wants.
  20. It’s been a long time coming to get some new voices at the top. Falvey replacing Dave St. Peter was a huge step in the right direction. The dropping of the ball on the whole TV situation really hamstrung this franchise coming off the playoff run. I know they were probably pressured by MLB but it shouldn’t have come to that point. I’m of the understanding that with all the people employed in the franchise nobody seen this death of cable coming and the incoming of streaming? Sure, you wouldn’t have had that easy $40M cable deal coming in but surely something could’ve been done or put in place to transition that deal better. Sadly, it will be DSP’s legacy marker as Twins President. When the Twins cleaned house in 2016-2017 they forgot one room. Upper management. Now with Falvey replacing DSP hopefully that room is finally getting cleaned.
  21. Absolutely this! It’s easy for people to forget the Terry Ryan years. And the Terry Ryan Metrodome years. Where this organization has come in terms of overhauling the team side of things is in itself a win just to get the Twins in the same realm as the rest of MLB. Now the business/ownership side needs to catch up. Love this comment. I’m always skeptical as well, but lend credit where credit is due. This franchise was 10 years behind when Falvey came in. Ownership and brass was 10 years behind until… insert new ownership.
  22. How about we simply call it what it is. A minor league depth move. That’s it. A good move for catching depth? Yes! Anything else? No!
  23. It’s definitely gone a long way especially since I last played college ball in the early 2000’s. Being able to maximize a players ability by improving mechanics is a way a team can capitalize on players. I had terrible mechanics which led to arm troubles that maybe could’ve been fixed in today’s game. I’m not sure how a division 2 college program in Minnesota employs data nowadays but anything more than working on grips could have helped. The biggest adjustments I made back then was foot placement. Consistently high? Shorten your landing spot. Consistently outside to a RH batter as a RH pitcher? Move your landing point to the left a hair. That was the best advice I got back then. That and finger pressure for different grips. Bullpen sessions had everything to do with these two adjustments. It helped me develop a very good curveball. Just playing with grips and pressures. Did I know the spin rate? No. But I could see which one bit harder and try to repeat that and improve upon that. It was the fun of learning how to pitch. If I could have had this data who knows. I would have loved to learn this data and work on improving. Nothing brought me as much joy in my life as watching a batter flinch at a good curveball coming at his hip and clip the inside corner. Other than a good letter high fastball that he couldn’t catch up to. Throwing mid 80’s in northern Minnesota was a true gift! Lol! But I loved the game of learning “How” to pitch and mechanics would’ve played a huge role if I was 25 years younger.
