  1. I actually did not say that everyone who was part of the past 5 years should go; that was someone else. And I think it's wrong thinking as well. I don't care about the past 5 years; they were bad, but they're the past. What's the future? Can it be improved if Dozier is flipped for a valuable, longer term piece? Is he, Ervin Santana, and others going to be at their peak in the offseason and are they likely to be waning by the time we can really compete? 2015 was clearly not the beginning of an upward trend but a blip, some luck, in the midst of lost years.
  2. While very clever, this is a bad baseball team, not a sick body. If you have assets, particularly those that might be replaceable, you have to consider dealing them for the right offer if it helps feel a huge void. I believe most fans would take the tear down efforts of the Cubs, Astros, etc., over the "partial rebuilds" of the Twins, Angels, and others. These now competitive teams didn't hang on to trade-able assets just because they were their good players.
  3. When I read articles of this trade from the Angels perspective and their expectations of Meyer, and combine that with questions about how legitimate his injury was, I can't help but wonder if Meyer was sitting out while Boras demanded a trade. I'm a cynic, I know.
  4. Pitching and defense, and more pitching. There would need to be other pieces, but yes, I think the Twins should consider a Sano trade if it brings back a top SP.
  5. Deal from strength to improve a weakness. The issue is that trading Plouffe, Vargas, and/or Park will not bring much back right now. If you want an ace you have to deal high value back. I would trade Sano, as difficult as it is. My target would be a controllable pitcher such as Steven Matz, Lucas Giolito, Julio Urias, or someone similar. With Matz, I would consider including Kyle Gibson but would need something additional (Rosario is the dream or Cecchini the fall back). You still may need to trade one of Vargas or Park. Next years infield is Mauer/Dozier/Plouffe/Escobar/Polanco/Vargas or Park with Cecchini and Vielma ready in AAA. Your rotation is now Matz/Santana/Berrios/Santiago/Duffy/Meija/May/Wheeler, and the current AA pitchers (Gonsalves) in waiting.
  6. Agreed, but I don't think the Twins will/should DFA him. DFA Milone to make room for a young guy (Wheeler). I would consider making Nolasco my long guy for the rest of the year or just September to get a look at Mejia or someone else, but ensuring Nolasco he will get every opportunity to be back in the rotation in 2017 for his walk year. I get it, Nolasco is not good, but you need depth in rotation, young guys are not guaranteed, and at this point in his not trade-able contract, why cut him now. See what he can do in his walk year.
  7. I think we should target Pittsburgh, if they decide to make a push. They need starting pitching and their infield could use some help for this year and the next few. I think Kyle Gibson would be good there, or Ervin Santana with some cash. For infield, I wonder if they would be interested in Dozier or Nunez and Polanco to play second/utility and third base next year. I would be asking for Taillon (dream) and McGuire or Mitch Keller and McGuire depending on the rest of the package and who/how much cash I give up.
  8. Yes, let's trade Dozier for a decent return... But someone needs to tell me what teams in the playoff hunt would give up something that would make you happy. Royals? Doesn't strike me as likely. They need rotation help before anything else so unless they go big there they likely won't give up much to improve second. Bluejays? They're adequately staffed there at the moment, and possibly the future with Travis. Sorry, but barring multiple injuries or other major issues on competitive teams, we likely won't have many suitors. P.S. I would love to be wrong.
  9. Trade away the veterans we all believe should go, including money where you must to improve the prospect return. Then bring up Mientkiewicz to start the rebuild with Polanco, Berrios, et al. I was stunned at the note on MLBTR yesterday about the Twins taking a lesser prospect return for someone to take all of Satana's salary. I hope that was what TR wanted and one of the reasons he was let go.
  10. Why is Joe Benson mentioned here, or in any thread, as any type of Major League option? How many accounts does he have on this site that he keeps peddling his name as anything other than a potential interesting Minor League project?
  11. How does correct my statement? You do as you like, the Twins will do as they like, and what they do for their situation is the only one that really counts. From Berardino: "In the Twins’ own accounting, the posting fee is spread out over four seasons, which pushes their projected 2016 payroll to roughly $108.7 million, including projections for six arbitration-eligible players. That’s slightly beyond their 2015 Opening Day payroll of $108.3 million." http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2015/12/10/twinsights-breaking-byung-ho-parks-contract-details/
  12. But for accounting purposes, the Twins are spreading it out over the life of the contract.
  13. Why will Nolasco will be good in the bullpen? It's a bad idea to assume he'd be good in the role. More importantly, I don't think he'd go for it and I don't think the Twins would push into until late 2016 or 2017. Sign Sipp, Bastardo or Clippard if he falls to the 3/$24M range.
  14. I don't buy Greene as Simon as actual league average starters, which is basically what Smyly, Porcello, Ray, et al were. Greene came from nowhere for a nice 3 month stretch, but i expect a Diamond-esque plummet. Simon out-pitched his metrics and is moving to the AL. I also can't help but wonder how such a huge jump up in innings will affect him. Dombrowski has made some nice deals in the past but trading Fister, Smyly, Porcello, Ray and letting Scherzer walk will hurt in 2015 and the future. I think age/regression/injuries, poor back end starting and depth, below average defense, and unreliable relief pitching make this is a .500 team as is; their starting pitching will no longer cover up their flaws.
  15. I think the case for Rosario is based mostly on his history. And his offense throughout his minor league is far better than Kepler's. I would also say Rosario has as much of a basis to win the starting job out of spring training this year as Hicks did in 2013, at least offensively. He actually has a much better track record that Hicks did. And if mentoring can really be beneficial, perhaps the pupil should be Eddie Rosario, not Hicks. If Torii is supposed to show guys how to go about their business, how to be professional, how to conduct yourself off the field as well as on, Rosario could be a huge benefactor.
  16. Agreed- they need to be respectable against the other divisions, including NL. Their record against the better teams in the West was truly pathetic: 1-19 vs. the A's (1-6), Angels (0-7), Dodgers and Giants. Can we beat up on the NL Central at all? I'd love to see us destroy the Cards and Cubs, and the others.
  17. Do I need to point out how ludicrous to pick out a single year of statistics for one player and the career statistics for another? In choosing Hunter, I expect that his decline in statistics will level out or perhaps even increase from last year. Rasmus has had more < or = mediocre seasons that great seasons. You believe that he has a great year or years in him. I don't believe he does. You also assume he would come here. I wouldn't assume it. What we do know is Torii will and Torii is. Regardless, don't cherry pick stats.
  18. I'm here to discuss baseball, not his views or opinions. I love the move for the offense. I think sitting back and saying that the offense did well last year so it will again, is folly. A RH OF is exactly what we need, and I think Hunter is likely the best viable option. I don't understand all the Rasmus over Hunter talk. Defensively, well, we can hope that returning to his roots and being made a mentor to the younger players might renew his high effort. I'll be interested to see what Butch Davis can do with our OF. On a side note, does anyone else get the feeling that a trade is coming? I can't help but think we might be moving a young OF named Arcia.
