Article: Twins Sign RHP Michael Pineda

Great - hard to dislike this type of risk/rewards move. And in my opinion he offers more upside than Smyly on the same contract. I wonder if the incentives are similar to what Smyly received. -

If that's the starting request from Pittsburgh, that's not outrageous and maybe the Twins could tweak a bit. I am waiting for the Danny Duffy rumor - 4 years at a reasonable price but not the bargain Cole or Archer are. I'm curious what the price would be for Duffy.- 169 replies

I'm not sure if this is true. Some examples of maybe why not: Atlanta traded Garcia, did not eat any of the money on his contract and got a rookie level, high risk pitcher. Kansas City and others had similar playoff hopes and they held on to the players in the last year of contracts rather than trade them. The Yankees and others had $1M+ in international funds but they held on to it rather than trade with Seattle and LAA for more advanced prospects. Additionally, they've made some really interesting coaching decisions that others haven't. Jeff Pickler vs Joe Vavra for "QA Manager"? Garvin Alston or one of many retreads for Pitching Coach? I'm not saying no one else would make this moves, but I don't know that they're exactly typical moves.

Pearson was a 3rd round pick but he was a mid 2nd round talent who fell. Pre-draft he was rated similarly to Rooker and in some cases, rated above Rooker. A players first partial season results is not a good way to rank them; you have to consider their projections and I think Seth has done so appropriately. Littell had an incredible period with the AA Yankees, but otherwise he has pitched like a 7k-8k per 9 pitcher in the minors and looks like he could be a nice back end arm. He did not dominate with the AA Twins. His stuff just doesn't warrant a higher ranking right now because he looks like a higher floor prospect rather than a high ceiling prospect.

Article: Hopes And Plans For Trevor May
sthpstm replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think counting his cup of coffee as a rookie in 2014 paints an accurate picture. His 2015 ERA was 4.43 and his FIP was a shiny 3.35. He was sent to the pen because Ervin Santana was coming back from suspension and the old regime had to have Tommy Milone and Mike Pelfrey starting games for them. Tyler Duffey didn't come up until August at which point they weren't going to stretch May back out again. He also bounced back from that poor start and made an excellent start before he was sent to the pen. I definitely would plan on May as a starter. He can be counted on for 8 if not 9 K's per 9 inning and has good stuff to back it up. The Twins don't need a regular 5th starter until the end of April so I'd work him back slowly and give him a few starts in April in AAA. Aaron Slegers or Dietrich Enns can make a spot start or two (assuming we don't sign 2 top starters. By then there will probably be an injury or a poor performer to replace.- 33 replies

Article: Sho Time: Could The Twins Really Land Ohtani?
sthpstm replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is just beyond ridiculous. He wants to play on the west coast; but let's blame Falvey and Levine for the location of Minneapolis. Or maybe it's because the Pohlads are cheap. The only blame here is on Ohtani and his representatives. How can you make every team put in time and effort (aka money) to give you a presentation when 2/3 or the teams have no chance regardless of that presentation? -

Article: Sho Time: Could The Twins Really Land Ohtani?
sthpstm replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He didn't pick them as his dark horse. He chose the Phillies as his dark horse where Olney chose the Twins. But when Law spoke about the Twins possibility, his thoughts were pretty similar - open DH spot, could play some outfield, future payroll space, big impact on the pitching, etc. -

Jon Morosi at mlb.com has the Twins listed as a dark horse among 8 potential spots for Ohtani... http://m.mlb.com/news/article/262478194/scouting-top-contenders-to-sign-shohei-ohtani/ -
Completely agree with your thoughts. Before they moved him out of the rotation in 2015, he had a 3.25 FIP. He had a .341 BABIP and a 69.5% LOB. Even assuming he couldn't have made any sort of adjustment to improve himself (pitch usage, sequencing, etc.), he still likely would have improved those numbers enough to drive his ERA into the low 4's if not lower thanks to improved defense and pitch framing.

Article: The Brian Dozier Trade That Almost Was
sthpstm replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Oh yeah, i'm clearly making some gut calls on premise. I don't deny this. It was interesting to follow the Adrian Gonzalez story and to read the players comments. Players were obviously upset but no one would really say it. Would a player taking the the Brian Dozier route which he took after the Garcia and Kintzler trades (I'm mad as hell, I don't care who knows, and I'm not going to take it any more/get on my back - I'll carry us), have had a positive effect that would have equated to a WS ring? I have no idea, but I think it has to be considered. -
Article: The Brian Dozier Trade That Almost Was
sthpstm replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As a Dodgers fan (Twins fan first, but live in southern California for 6 years), I thought at the time it was a huge mistake to not give up more to get Dozier and I certainly feel that way now. They obviously have a lot of position player talent, but the players were all a little bland. I know Puig isn't, but I wouldn't call Puig's energy infectious. Dozier's energy has seemed to be that. He doesn't back down and he brings others with him. I thought and am more convinced, the Dodger's were missing that, but the intensely analytical Dodgers FO didn't value that. -
Article: Who's Number One?: Minnesota's Top Prospect
sthpstm replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For me, Nick Gordon being a top prospect revolves obviously around how he performs defensively as a SS, but offensively will he continue to develop plate discipline. His brother only walks around 5% of the time. To be a top performer, Nick needs to maintain the 9% he discovered this year, or preferably improve it while cutting down his strikeouts. He might improve his doubles power but he'll never be a slugger so he needs to get on base with solid contact and walks. -
Article: The Hunt For An Ace Starter
sthpstm replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What money is this that they didn't spend in 2017? I've seen this $140M figure thrown around for player salaries and maybe you're referring to that. But should the MLB roster consume all of it? Isn't that $140M for player salaries, which means international signings and the June draft, which the Twins spent significantly on this year due to the extra pick and picking first? And we have no idea how much additional money the new FO has sunk into increasing the staff and probably the systems operated. If so, the Twins may be at the lower end of the percentage scale on spending for the current year. -
Article: Sizing Up The 2017-18 Offseason
sthpstm replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
From the article: "For Falvey and his general manager Thad Levine, the goal is to unseat the current Central champs by following a similar path, but skipping the stagnation." Why is skipping the stagnation the goal? I thought building a winning organization for the long term was Falvey and Levine's goal. Pushing hard this offseason, spending dollars and prospects to try to close the HUGE gap between the Twins and the Indians seems like folly. Yes, it may get us a few more wins this year and next but it could also diminish what we can do in a couple of years. Signing a mid-tier starting and adding a few bullpen pieces - isn't that exactly what TR would do? We need a system that wins. Yes, some fans may want the chips pushed in because of 1 winning season, but we are 10-15 wins below where we need to be. Adding a few pitchers will not do this. Having a system that creates this players and supplements them with a few additional players can do this. So if the FO decides to "tread water" for a year or two while building the system, I don't blame them. As a very few others have noted, my expectation is that they find starters that don't excite but can develop into starters that do excite. This will take some time. -
Based off of this type of 1 game rationale: Jaime Garcia with the Twins is a shut down ace who will lead us into the postseason. Jaime Garcia with the Yankees is a bum who should retire.

Article: Are The Twins Suddenly Sellers?
sthpstm replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So we want them to build a consistent winner, BUT they're not allowed to trade veterans who are good or decent. You can't improve a system much by trading only what you don't want. I'm guessing most people here bought into the "total system failure" when it was stated by Pohlad last year. Do you think a year later everything is fixed by hanging on to what you have, expecting the guys in the minors will all come up and be successful and that a few FA's we plug in will contribute? I say no. Give the new guys time. And yes, turn over some of roster, even some successful players. I want to see some aggressive moves to build a continuous winner, even if that means a drop in on the MLB team this year, and even next. Almost everyone complained about TR's recent stint, and yet, it seems like most people want to continue his blueprint, with his roster in tact.- 82 replies

Article: Twins Close To Acquiring LHP Jaime Garcia?
sthpstm replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Considering the best prospect that the Braves gave up to get Garcia was someone in or below the Jake Reed/Pat Light/etc territory, and the others were not high cieling risks either, yes I'd be annoyed if it is someone like Blankenhorn, a consensus top 10 in the system. -
Compare the Twins schedule for April and May to June and July; the AL Central is supposed to be a weaker division than the others. Over the next couple of months we face the Orioles twice, Astros twice, Yankees, Dodgers, RedSox, Indians twice and others who can probably be considered better than teams they have faced multiple times already. I think we need to see what the current collection (and hopefully a few new young relievers) can do versus better competition before giving up prospects for a run at the playoffs.

Slegers has had great results when he hasn't had terrible results. He's been very Jekyll and Hyde from start to start. I'm curious what has been the difference in terms of run prevention because he's given up a fair amount of hits even in his good starts.

This is probably realistic, though disappointing. I am curious why you think his walk rate will drop to the lowest rate since his rookie year.
