  1. 1500 ESPN's Judd Zulgad asked Ron Gardenhire some pretty specific questions about Trevor Plouffe's opportunities. Gardy blames Plouffe's hand for his struggles: I remember when that thumb injury first came up, on the Gleeman and the Geek podcast we talked about how Plouffe's numbers were going to be crummy over the second half and we would have all these questions this offseason. That certainly happened. The doesn't mean he wasn't fluky in May/June, but I'm anxious for him to get another shot. Notebook: Trevor Plouffe earns right to get chance to take 3rd base - Minnesota Twins news | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers) | Sportswire: Minnesota Twins
  2. Strib has a one-minute video talking to Aaron Hicks. He looks a lot older than in some of the previous pictures I've seen. I'm not a fan of the moustache, but I'll be interested to get to know this guy. Meet Aaron Hicks | StarTribune.com
  3. I don't know. I might go with option C: they're just so desperate to find solutions for their middle infield spots that they're jousting windmills.
  4. Boy, I sure like having Miller back on the beat. He's such a good writer. I also loved this quote from Gardy: If I had my druthers, I might leave Hicks in AAA unless I was REALLY sure he was ready to succeed in the majors. And I don't know why Benson is even in the discussion, to be honest. He certainly hasn't shown anything to suggest he's ready for the majors since August of 2011.
  5. I don't think anyone here is going to argue that Butera isn't a terrible hitter. He's historically bad. That said, I'd still rather have him on the roster than Herrmann. Herrmann isn't ready. One could argue that Butera isn't either, but Herrmann has a chance to be ready if he continues his development, and I see no reason to risk that development, even if it means he ends up as a backup catcher. I'll also say this - Butera's defense is valuable. It might be especially valuable for a team that has two starting catchers that can hit but struggle defensively. The pitch framing thing is one aspect, but beyond that, it's nice to have an additional tool in your toolbox that is different than the other tools. There are games where having a defensive specialist might be handy. That raises ta player's value above the statistical correlations upon which we all lean.
  6. I think he will. According to nearly everyone in the Twins organization, Dozier is a much better defender than we saw last year. Gardy's enthusiasm regarding Dozier prior to the year would seem to confirm that. (I can't imagine Gardy loving the kid if his defense wasn't solid.) It's one of the reasons I'm dubious about the Twins playing Dozier at 2B this spring. I'd rather he play SS in AAA than 2B in MLB.
  7. This is a really good argument. I was a little uncomfortable with this demand pricing, but this is a great point. It's also pretty savvy of the Twins to start demand pricing this year, when it is unlikely to be used. It will make it more palatable in 2015, when it might be.
  8. My understanding is that the price will never drop below the season ticket price.
  9. Unless he's hurt, I can't imagine Burnett not being on the Opening Day roster. I think this is an organizational blind spot.
  10. Wimmers - good call. I think he is being consistently overlooked, though given his control problems in 2011, maybe he should be. But control problems and an elbow injury often go hand in hand. If he recovers to where he should be, suddenly the Twins have one more good young arm in their high minors. I'm optimistic about Benson this year. Between him and Arcia, I hope the Twins end up with a serious log jam in the outfield next offseason.
  11. Rhett Bollinger reports had a full squad meeting and stressed that the Twins should turn the page on the last two seasons. I wonder how long managers plan that. I bet it's on their mind quite a bit during the offseason. I also wonder what mine would be, especially if I was in Gardy's shoes. Off the top of my head, I'll go with something like: "You each have a chance to be part of the next winning Twins team. Maybe it'll be this year. Maybe it won't. But your actions and focus, on and off the field, are going to determine your future, one way or the other." Gardy addresses team as full-squad work starts | twinsbaseball.com: News
  12. Kind of a fun video of the Twins golfing in tournament for a cancer center. You've likely seen Butera's and Duensing's outfits, but you haven't lived until you've seen Gardenhire swing with a cigar in his mouth: Twins tee it up in Florida | StarTribune.com
  13. Brian Murphy at Pi Press talks about Josh Willingham's goals this offseason. Josh doesn't take the bait: http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_22597486/minnesota-twins-josh-willinghams-numbers-goal-is-zero That sounds like a fine goal to me. Oswaldo Arcia might privately not agree.
  14. Judd Zulgad of 1500 ESPN give us an overview of starting pitcher Scott Diamond's recovery efforts. Diamond felt good on Friday, not so good on Saturday. Scott Diamond remains optimistic but knows he can't rush recovery - Minnesota Twins news | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? 15. Good lord. The human body only has about 5 liters of blood in it. That can't be right.
  16. Unless someone gets hurt, I gotta think there is no chance for Herrmann breaking with the club. And even if someone is hurt, they might not. They might want him to get some time at AAA, and I have no problem with that.
  17. I wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole. I'll gie a reason for the under that I don't think I've seen - the last place team in a division is often very, very bad, like low 60s kind of bad. And the Twins are going to be the last place team in this division.
  18. It's a fair point that a lot of the thoughts about Morneau's future are assuming that Parmelee sticks. I've been as optimistic about him as anyone, but that's still a pretty big "If" given his minor league history.
  19. I'm shutting off this thread. I'm temporarily banning jokin and Dave for some of the first few comments. I'll be honest - I'll close the forums before I advocate this kind of discourse. And I'll hand out bans to a dozen members who put personal vendettas over civil discussion several steps before I close down the forums. Play nice. If you can't, there will be bans. That is all.
  20. In one of his notes, Judd Zulgad of ESPN 1500 talks about the new hitting coach situation: I like that it all goes through Bruno in theory. I do worry a little bit about this becoming a distraction. Too many cooks.... Notebook: Low-key approach is the name of the game as workouts begin - Minnesota Twins news | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers) | Sportswire: Minnesota Twins
  21. Second story we've seen in a week that basically points out that Ryan got the big stuff (high-upside high-minors starting pitching) right even if 2013 looks kind of dismal. I guess. I'd still maintain it wasn't an either/or scenario. Zulgad compares the Twins to football teams, as is his want.... I think it's becoming en vogue to swim against the stream when it comes to being pessimistic about the 2013 season. Maybe that's just spring talking. Or maybe it's the Vikings season that just ended. Or maybe it's just the pivot that sportswriters like to take to keep things fresh. But I gotta say - I think this is going to be one pretty dismal season if one focuses on the results. The stories that will be worth following will be individual. And let's not forget that if either of these high minors arms struggles - or worse yet is injured - the hope that is being sold is going to look awfully silly. Zulgad: Twins might be a year away but at least there is now a clear plan | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers) | Sportswire: Minnesota Twins
  22. Phil Mackey gives five things to watch/opinions about the Twins spring training. The two that struck me were: Mackey is a little more bullish than I am on this pitching staff. Given that, it makes sense. I was also a little surprised to see this: I gotta say, I think it's a real mistake to push Dozier to the majors again. Let the guy get his feet under him in AAA for chrisakes. Mackey: Pitcher injuries, Joe Benson among things to watch in Florida - Minnesota Twins news | 1500 ESPN Twin Cities ? Minnesota Sports News & Opinion (Twins, Vikings, Wolves, Wild, Gophers) | Sportswire: Minnesota Twins
  23. It sounds like Jared Buirton is grateful for the string of health he had and hoping to step us his usage a bit.... With ink dry on extension, Burton grateful for health | twinsbaseball.com: News
  24. Brian Murphy of the Pi Press checks in on Rich Harden. it has a variation on the usual "best shape of my life" spring training story: Lord, help me, but I'm going to get sucked in by this. I'm going to believe. I can feel the stomach punch already. Minnesota Twins' Rich Harden hopes for more time on mound, less on DL - TwinCities.com
  25. I found the whole tone of this story reassuring. Mauer seems to understand he doesn't need to try and play hero and catch a lot early: I'm also glad Torre is reinforcing that message. Maybe it'll sink in and this 120 games nonsense will fade away quietly. Minnesota Twins: Joe Mauer has a friend in Joe Torre with Team USA - TwinCities.com
