  1. Judd Zulgad writes about how Ron Gardenhire has at least one believer in the organization. And it's an important one: his boss. It will be interesting this season to see how Gardenhire ends up. With Terry Ryan at the helm, I don't think Gardy will be judged bases on wins and losses. He might get fired based on other things. But it isn't going to be just because of a 90-loss season. Ryan knows the talent level on this team. And he knows he put Gardy in a tough situation by building for the future instead of the present. And that's the way it should be, IMHO. http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Zulgad_Presence_of_Terry_Ryan_as_GM_is_good_news_for_Ron_Gardenhire021813
  2. Howard Sinker blogs about all the stories being written about Ben Revere in Philly - and posts the Ben Revere "Put a Ring On It" video. You don't want to miss this. He's either going to love or hate that city. I don't see any middle ground. I think it will be the former. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/191810521.html
  3. Phil Miller gives some raw impressions from watching a bunch of Twins pitchers throw, including Luis Perdomo, Trevor May and Sam Deduno.... I thought Delmon signed with someone else..... http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/191722591.html Late addition: - La Velle also had some notes. - MIller and Neal did a video diary of what they saw, too.
  4. Mauer feels great. And he wants to catch more. Fortunately, I think Gardy is maintaining his cool... http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/191756651.html
  5. I would stand by the decision not to pick up that option. No way they can guarantee that kind of money coming off of TJ.
  6. +1 I'm starting to get excited about Arcia. He seems to be trending in the right direction - a guy that everyone feels maybe they had overlooked and now are wondering why they missed him.
  7. If you left a comment earlier, I apologize. The story got corrupted and I had to delete it.

  9. About 15 months ago, Nick, Parker, Seth and I began talking about creating a Minnesota Twins website for independent writers and fans. It became clear we were on the right path when the question we asked ourselves changed from "Are we going to do this?" and became "Why the hell didn't we do this five years ago?" So, really, today should be Twins Daily's sixth birthday. If it was, this site would make a lot more sense. Six years seems about the right amount of time to generate 1200 Twins stories by independent writers. 2500 registered members over that time would seem reasonable. Over 6 years, 14,000 posts and comments per year would get us to the 84,000 that have already been entered. And we would be doing backflips over 6.2 million page views during that six-year period. Except that we didn't start it six years ago. Those numbers are all from this first year. And you're the difference. You're the difference in a lot of other ways, too. We are daily witnessing members find their voice, either in the blogs or in the forums. Our community has become the definitive source for Twins minor league coverage. Also, discussion about the team is increasingly centered around thoughtful analysis, both internally and in the corporate media. You're the driving force for all of these. Best of all, the community, content and interaction just keep growing. Our numbers are showing 30-50% growth this year, even as the Twins are selling 25% fewer season tickets. But we're determined to do better, so please let us know your thoughts about the site. So Happy First Birthday everyone! Go for it - stick your whole face in that cake. The site is in its infancy, but you've already made our wildest dreams come true. Thank you. We'll do our best to continue to deserve your attention and support.
  10. Anthony Catrovince tries to be gentle, but isn't optimistic about the Twins 2013 season: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130217&content_id=41735008

  12. Pi Press columnist Bob Sansevere takes issue with the Twins decision to target pitchers coming off of injuries: I guess I'd be OK with signing injured pitchers if there were some upside, but in most cases there really isn't. http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_22615468/bob-sansevere-memo-twins-hope-isnt-strategy

  14. Pi Press reporter Brian Murphy interviews Kevin Correia and gets his side of the story, but also isn't afraid to interject Twins fans concerns: http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_22610767/minnesota-twins-kevin-correia-focused-wins-not-style
  15. Yeah, I thought of that as we were wrapping up that discussion, bue decided to move on. I suspect the difference is people downgrading their ticket packages. I suspect that amount is more than the 5% difference between 19% annd 24%. At the media luncheon before twins fest, St. Peter said the season ticket sales were about 18,000, and that's about when he said 81% renewal, too. That would be 28%. And that also doesn't take into account any new season ticket holders.
  16. What I found impressive is that he makes no bones about bowing out. And then goes a step further in praising Bruno as the right guy for the job. he doesn't need to do either of those things. You see this in the business world all the time. A new manager comes in, but the old manager is still around, and if the old manager doesn't actively work on staying clear, his previous employees will often naturally gravitate back towards him. To actively stay distant, to give the new person their own working space, and to support them even if they do something different, is impressive. Not everyone can so easily do that. Just recognizing that he needs to do it is admirable.
  17. If you have a Netflix account, you can now watch Pelotero, the movie about MLB signing Dominican prospects that focused on the signing of Miguel Sano, for free. I did so yesterday afternoon. We had a thread on Twins Daily about the movie a few months ago, if you want to reference it. It included questions asked to the director of the filem. After watching it yesterday, I was puzzled by the clear implication that the Pirates scout Rene Gayo somehow manipulated MLB baseball to force Sano to sign with Pittsburgh. I can't figure out how he got that leverage. It is as if someone in MLB owed him a major favor, or MLB wanted Sano to sign with a small market team. I can't figure out how come 29 other teams didn't call BS, like the Twins did. I'd sure love to get some inside speculation on how he had MLB in his back pocket.
  18. La Velle E Neal busts out his writing chops with a story on how the team is viewing Trevor Plouffe this year: FWIW, I think we can add Twins fans to the list of people that would like Plouffe to stay at a position. What has stopped him has been fielding competently at any one (infield) position. So make it happen, Trevor. Settled at one position, Twins' Plouffe hopes he sticks | StarTribune.com
  19. Phil Miller finds out from Dave St. Peter that the first day of single game ticket sales wasn't great, but St. Peter doesn't see too precipitous of a drop: That confidence would seem to be misplaced. Last year, the Twins drew 2.77 million - and ranked 12th overall. Last year, the dividing line between the top 15 and bottom 15 was about 2.35M. Would the Twins sink that low? Consider that season ticket sales have gone down from 25,000 to 19,000, which is a 24% drop. A similar drop in overall sales would put the twins at 2.1 million this year. Early indications show decreased demand for Twins tickets | StarTribune.com

  25. Brian Murphy dives into the new roles that Joe Vavra (the old hitting coach) and Tom Brunansky (the new hitting coach) have, and how that will work. I gotta say, I respect the hell out of Vavra's attitude: That's impressive. There will likely be some issues here, but it sounds like they're all prepared to tackle them.
