  1. This story is about Everyday Eddie, but has an interesting note at the end.... Minnesota Twins: Eddie Guardado brings new credentials to spring training - TwinCities.com I can't help but wonder - could this mean that Sano has a chance at starting the year at New Britain? Or back at Cedar Rapids? Isn't Fort Myers a foregone conclusion?
  2. Brian Murphy provides some specifics on how Scott Diamond is recovering and what he has left to do. He also hints at why this surgery didn't happen until December: Minnesota Twins: Anxious pitcher Scott Diamond 'in limbo' while elbow heals - TwinCities.com
  3. Phil Miller kicks off his baseball blog with a bizarre story about a White Sox fan who goes to TwinsFest every year to buy old Minnesota Twins ticket stubs - but only specific ones. The guy pays cash and needs 30 games more. You might want to search through your old stubs if you're the type that keeps them. 6-4-3 | StarTribune.com
  4. Neal runs through the options for Opening Day starter, stating a case for each. If I had to guess right now, I'd go with the dark horse - this guy.... Who pitches for the Twins on Opening Day? | StarTribune.com
  5. I'm going to go with Plouffe. We'll wonder why we didn't attribute more of his second half struggles last year to that thumb injury. Gibson might be a close second.
  6. Not any big breaking news, but it's encouraging to hear that some of the more pivotal guys this season are either there early (Plouffe, Dozier) or already throwing bullpen (Hendriks). It's also neat that some of the minor leaguers which are inspiring hope are there, too, liks Sano and Vargas. Twins pre-camp notes: Toma, Mauer, Sano | StarTribune.com
  7. Howard Sinker is trying to be optimistic today. He really is. It's just not coming that easy.... Section 219: Spring training opens so set aside the snark (for a day) | StarTribune.com
  8. Dave Campbell of the Associated Press reviews the status of the three guys that the Twins are counting on to be competetive in the future: Kyle Gibson, Alex Meyer and Trevor May. For those looking for optimism, obviously it starts here. Gibson seem to be open to his role this year, at least publicly.... Personally, I wonder if we're not putting an awful big number of eggs in those 3 baskets. Twins have hope for future starting pitching surge | StarTribune.com
  9. Actually, he does. He's #1 on the list of anyone who watched this team in the 80s and it's not particularly close. If you want a statistic that begins to show his effect on the fan base, check out his win probability scores while he was here: -.5, 1.8, -3.5, .1, -2.7. Basically one passable year and two real clunkers. The fan base never trusted him after 1984 - and it wasn't like they didn't try to boost him up. Google "I believe in R.D t-shirts" sometime. Word has it that when he was traded, the Twins had a party on the plane. Not because he wasn't a good guy. But he just had the smell of defeat around him. The fans, and apparently even the team, was just waiting for games to be blown for two solid years. That's no way to compete. ♠
  10. The Twins couldn't have spun things better themselves. And I mean that as a compliment. Souhan argues that Terry Ryan and the Twins are solely focused on the future, even if he won't admit it. Through this lens, the year's blunderous free agent pitching strategy doesn't look that important. In fact, it looks like side concern, because the priority needed to be getting young players. (In fact, one could argue it's even a decent strategy, as it leads to a higher draft pick.) I'm still dissappointed in the free agent strategy this offseason, and I think Ryan really blew it on a couple of moves, but Souhan's paradigm is an enticing one. Souhan: Forbearance serves Twins and their fans well | StarTribune.com
  11. Nice to have Miller back on a baseball beat. He writes a very comprehensive story about Gardenhire this year, including interviews with Tom Kelly and broaching the subject of Gardenhire's job security with Terry Ryan: Gardenhire is highly qualified for latest Twins task | StarTribune.com
  12. A story on how critical Anderson's year is to the Twins, Gardenhire's and his own future. An interesting opinion by La Velle: Neal: With stakes raised, Anderson staying the course | StarTribune.com
  13. La Velle lists five questions for the Twins, but they're spring training, not season related. Instead of Mauer's workload, I'd add something about the bullpen, which looks to be full, but not especially effective. I kind of like #4... Chart: Five questions facing the Twins | StarTribune.com
  14. Lots of talk on payroll and the relative salary of Mauer. Twins' Dave St. Peter: Team opens season with $80 million to $85 million payroll - TwinCities.com
  15. Lord, but I'm down on the Twins infield situation. Mason gives a good overview and gets Terry Ryan's thoughts... Twins ST will see competition in middle infield
  16. I find it somewhat interesting that one of Worley's worst days as a pitcher came at Hammond Stadium when he was trying to make the Phils last year. I also find it interesting that off-speed stuff seems to be more critical in the AL... Minnesota Twins' Vance Worley returns to scene of 'worst outing' - TwinCities.com
  17. I like kitschy as much as anyone, but I'll admit I'm a little baffled by how incredibly popular these are in Minnesota. In any case, it sounds like we'll be seeing Willingham as well as a double bobblehead of Morneau and Mauer. (Might want to do latter before the end of July....) Shooter Now: Twins bobbleheads: Joe Mauer-Justin Morneau, Josh Willingham - TwinCities.com
  18. When even Mr. Powers refuses to jump on the bandwagon.... Tom Powers: For Twins, spring training is the best of times - TwinCities.com
  19. I like that he pays attention to the problems the Twins have had with their depth. He also doesn't pull any punches when talking about Chris Parmelee and Justin Morneau. http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_22562222/minnesota-twins-begin-rebuilding-lots-questions-few-answers
  20. To countdown the days til pitchers and catchers report, we're going to list the Twins with those numbers (thanks to this awesome list) and let you can reminisce about one of them. So who is the poster boy for day #1.... Reno Bertoia, 1961 Billy Martin, 1961 Bernie Allen, 1963-64 Billy Martin, 1965-68 (Coach) Billy Martin, 1969 (Manager) Eric Soderholm, 1971-72 Rich Reese, 1973 Sergio Ferrer, 1974-75 Jerry Terrell, 1975-77 Larry Wolfe, 1978 Jesus Vega, 1980 Tim Corcoran, 1981 Ray Smith, 1982 Houston Jimenez, 1983 Alvaro Espinoza, 1984-86 John Moses, 1988-90 Jarvis Brown, 1991-92 Alex Cole, 1994-95 Otis Nixon, 1998 Jay Canizaro, 2000, 2002 Jason Kubel, 2004 Luis Castillo, 2006-07 Orlando Hudson, 2010 Tsuyoshi Nishioka, 2011-12 Wow - now this is quite a list. Billy Martin to Tsuyoshi Nishioka. Which makes one speculate exactly what would have happened if Martin ever coached Nishioka. Now THAT would have been entertaining. I'll go with Otis Nixon, who I watched lose two fly balls in the teflon roof in his first ever home game with the Twins. As bad as things might be this year, I predict we won't see our team openly miss two fly balls in the home opener. At least not indoors.

  25. To countdown the days til pitchers and catchers report, we're going to list the Twins with those numbers (thanks to this awesome list) and let you can reminisce about one of them. So who is the poster boy for day #2.... Zoilo Versalles, 1961-67 Frank Kostro, 1968-69 Graig Nettles, 1969 Frank Crosetti, 1970-71 (Coach) Bobby Darwin, 1972-75 John Briggs, 1975 Craig Kusick, 1975 Steve Braun, 1976 Randy Bass, 1977 John Castino, 1979-84 Chris Pittaro, 1986-87 Wally Backman, 1989 Nelson Liriano, 1990 Donnie Hill, 1992 Pat Meares, 1993-98 Luis Rivas, 2000-05 Denard Span, 2008-12 Huh. I gotta say, I'm a little surprised that this isn't a more accomplished list. Mears vs. Span vs. Versalles has to go to Zoilo, but outside of that MVP season, he was an enigma. His career OPS? Just 657, though that's better than it sounds with an OPS+ of 82. One can argue whether he really deserved that award, but it's not arguable that he was a top candidate, and him winning it is even more remarkable considering a teammate, Tony Oliva, finished second.
