  1. I just looked up the biggest TV markets, since that seems to be a major source of revenue. I'm surprised to find Tampa-St. Pete is 13th. That's two ABOVE Mpls-St. Paul. The biggest one without a team is #19 - Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne. I can't imagine the Marlins would be thrilled with that, but it makes some sense. Orlando could definitely build them a stadium, I would think. And right after them is Portland, which has a pretty successful AAA team. It's an interesting list. I think the smallest is Milwaukee at #35. New Orleans is #53. They'd make an interesting choice. Right after that is Sacramento, who is about to lose a basketball team. (Which, BTW, is one ahead of St. Louis?)
  2. Bring back the trees. Plant them on the mound.
  3. Doogie's sources, for the most part, seem to be agents. He's also, imho, the best local inside info reporter locally. If he's saying the Twins never offered a contract to Marcum, I believe him.
  4. To countdown the days til pitchers and catchers report, we're going to list the Twins with those numbers (thanks to this awesome list) and let you pick your favorite. So who is the poster boy for 1/25 or Day #18.... Paul Giel, 1961 Danny McDevitt, 1961 Dick Stigman, 1962-65 Rich Reese, 1966 Jim Ollom, 1967 Tom Hall, 1968 Dick Woodson, 1969 Bill Rigney, 1970-72 (Manager) Eddie Bane, 1973, 1976 Mike Pazik, 1975 Mark Wiley, 1975 Don Carrithers, 1977 Greg Thayer, 1978 Paul Hartzell, 1979 Greg Johnston, 1980 Ray Smith, 1981 Terry Felton, 1982 Ken Schrom, 1983-85 Alejandro Sanchez, 1986 Don Baylor, 1987 Tom Herr, 1988 Kelvin Torve, 1988 Shane Rawley, 1989 Paul Sorrento, 1991 Darren Reed, 1992 Eddie Guardado, 1993-2003, 2008 Jason Bartlett, 2004-07 Matt Macri, 2008 Luis Ayala, 2009 Orlando Cabrera, 2009 Jason Repko, 2010-11 Ryan Doumit, 2012 I'm going with Paul Sorrento, because in 1990 at some random party/bar, I distinctly remember trying to convince some girls that he was my roommate, but he had failed to make the team, so I got to live in this great place alone. I felt it was especially ingenious, because he wasn't really on anyone's radar, and if she ever checked she would find out that really was some random Twins minor leaguer who was close to the majors and wonder if I had been telling the truth. I did not go home with her. I know. You're shocked.
  5. I wonder if this makes it more likely that Joe Saunders comes to the Twins?
  6. Nice story on Caleb Thielbar, the Minnesota native that floundered in the Brewers system, played with the Saints, bounced back with the Twins and was added to their 40-man roster this winter. If you don't know his story, it's a fun one. I'll be rooting for him to make it to the bigs and stick around.
  7. From 2001? If so, great picture. Hey there Hughesy... | Glen Perkins and Joe Mauer!
  8. One thing that should probably be an any profile is age. Walker is 21, and we haven't seen him above rookie league. Expectations need to be tempered.
  9. This is "Insider" only, so please be respectful about lifting content, but ESPN writer Jason Martinez thinks the Twins optimal year of contention is 2016. What do you think. Will we need to wait four more seasons?
  10. Jeff Louderback of the Baseball News Source gives his Top 10 Twins Prospects. Seems like he has Gibson a little higher than most, and Meyer higher than Hicks. See if you agree with his reasoning...

  12. Aaron and John talk about Drew Butera and evaluating catcher defense, Brian Duensing starting or relieving, pursuing Joe Saunders, drinking at noon, gay athletes, online dating, the vetting process for weirdos, talking prostitution during a haircut, interviewing Dave St. Peter, the arbitration process, preparing for TwinsFest, Nick Blackburn's wrist surgery, Elliott Gould's chest hair, grading the Twins' offseason, and playing hooky. Here are: the podcasts the rss feed if you want to subscribe and the podcast on iTunes.
  13. Mike Hlas of The Gazette writes about Cedar Rapids switch to the Minnesota Twins and how it is re-energizing their franchise.
  14. KFFL asks four burning fantasy baseball questions about the Twins, but they're good enough questions for non-fantasy baseball fans: What are Justin Morneau's prospects of returning to All-Star form? How will Glen Perkins handle the closing job? What will Trevor Plouffe do with a full-time job? Where will Minnesota get its best starting pitching?
  15. Sports Illustrated gives the Twins a B- for their offseason moves. It likes the trades, dislikes the pitching signings and wonders why the middle infield is still a mess. I'd be interested in others thoughts on the grade for the Twins this year. My initial reaction was D, just because the rotation seems so botched, but I am happy with the trades and where they position the Twins for 2014. I guess I'd go with a "C" but not for the usual reason. Usually a C implies average - they did about what I'd have expected them to do. Instead, they did far less in some areas and far more in others. A "C" seems to be where they balance out to.
  16. Scott Pianowski of Yahoo Sports gives us an entertaining article previewing the Twins 2013 sason. He asks several questions and then answers them as best he can. Some of them might make interesting forum topics. He also points out some stats on right-handed versus left-handed power..... If you're looking for some fun writing about your favorite team, I'd recommend clicking over. Then come back here with your thoughts.
  17. Brad Berreman at Rant Sports published an outlook for how the Twins look from a fantasy baseball perspective. I thought it was pretty balanced. I would think the "sleepers" would be Ryan Doumit (who is a better fantasy player than real player) and Aaron Hicks would be near the top of the list. Maybe also Chris Parmelee, if he's overlooked in your league. I especially liked this evaluation of the shortstops....
  18. Jon Morosi reports the Twins are talking to Joe Saunders. This isn't the first time we've heard this. In fact, LaVelle reported over the winter meetings that the Twins made him an offer. When we wrote up the Offseason Handbook, he seemed like a very Twins-ish target, if only they could afford him: I'm pretty sure just about any contract to him is going to be multi-year, but I think I'd be OK with that. The Twins have money this year, and they have lots of money the next couple years, too. And Saunders isn't Kevin Correia. He has a decent chance of replicating the good years of Carl Pavano at Target Field. Would I flinch at 3/21? A little, but I think I'd swing.
  19. There are serious concerns about his health. He had some elbow injuries last year. I thought I'd explain why I would NOT give him a 2-year deal. Going into June, Marcum looked like he was heading for a big pay day this offseason. He had posted two seasons of 200 inning ball with a 3.60 ERA. He had (if I remember right) another good start to this year. He and his agent had to be thinking that he was in line for a 3/33M deal - and that was before the salaries escalated. Instead, he had elbow problems, which reminds everyone that Marcum has elbow problems, and limped through the rest of the year. If I'm him, and I'm confident that the elbow issue was temporary and I'm going to bounce back, I WANT a one-year deal. I want to have a 2013 season that is like my 2011 season and 2010 season and get back onto the market again where I'm going to make 3/40 or at least 2/25. On the other hand, it I'm worried I really do need Tommy John soon, then I want a two-year deal. So if he wants a 2-year deal, I'd stay away. To me, it's an indication that he himself doesn't have confidence that he's healthy. In fact, I'd argue that I'd rather give him a 3-year deal than a 2-year deal, just because if he is hurt, at least I have a chance to get some value out of the 3rd and 4th year that I don't get in a 2-year if he needs TJ.
  20. I've been wondering about this myself. My best understanding is that it opens the door to corporate sponsorship from Japanese businesses.
  21. I agree. I wanted to check the math, because it looked just so much better than I anticipated. If anything, it begs for the Twins to spend some of that money. Not necessarily a mult-year deal for Saunders, but overpaying a bit for Marcum makes a lot of sense.
  22. Let's get this down before Marcum signs - what is your over/under number for a "good" contract for Shaun Marcum. Aaron and I wrestled a bit about this on the latest podcast. He's willing to give Marcum a 2-year deal, say for $15M. I'm not. In fact, I'd be more willing to offer him a 1/10 deal than a 2/15. What is your number? It has to answer two questions: - above it, you say "no" - below it, you say "yes" I'm going to go with 1 year/9M. I'm not willing to do a 2-year deal.
  23. Yep, right on. the primary reasons were: 1) Cost-cutting, after signing Nishioka. 2) He was fairly expensive and coming off of a couple of pretty bad years. He was also perceived as fragile. 3) There is a lot of 20/20 hindsight going on. He was not overly valued by anyone, as is seen by what Baltimore nabbed him for. 4) The Twins wanted to add speed. At the time, I think I wrote that this was fair accomopli once they decided to go for Nishioka. They weren't going to pay for both. And I continue to believe that the Nishioka signing was more business-driven than team-driven. They were trying to expand their revenue base into Asia.
  24. Can someone unpack this a little bit? Like give an example?
  25. When I looked at what the bidders were getting for their bids, I was a little underwhelmed. Two autographs on items of your choosing (with limitations) and a picture? I sort of assume these are primarily for resellers? Like so they can get their autograph on a painting or something?
