Twins players season predictions
Platoon replied to ShouldaCouldaWoulda's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The scenario: A Twins pitcher has just thrown a pitch, it is batted into the air, he turns and looks, then crouches down, a look of horror on his face, as he covers his eyes! What did he just see? A: A comet heading towards the statue of Kent Hrbek? B: Wally the Beer Man reinstated, carrying a new electronic drivers license reader? C: A commonly struck baseball heading toward the Twins OF? D: All,of the above? -
Twins players season predictions
Platoon replied to ShouldaCouldaWoulda's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
A lot of these predictions seem to be time stamped last night, possibly after Happy Hour was over? . Mine will be written in the early dawn, with a clear head and a total lack of knowledge. My predictions will be by position and only good until the AS game. At that time I would expect some significant changes to the lineups. Rating based on position and compared to last year regardless of who played there. Plus (+). Minus (-) or status quo (0) 1B. + 2B. + 3B. - SS. + LF. + CF. 0 RF. - C. - SP. - RP. - My scoring system is based on a secret algorithm, tireless research, and 15 minutes to kill before breakfast. That said, a combination of pitchers hitting bats, and the proposed statuesque outfield does bode well for the pessimistic fan! -
Article: Dozier's Expected Extension
Platoon replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The article says he is under team control until 2019. And we don't have a real handle on which BD is the one we would sign? He is a competent ball player, but the Twins have some promising middle infield players in the pipeline. The only reason it seems to sign him at this time would be for ticket sales. -
Require Relievers to Face More than 1 Batter? I think I like this.
Platoon replied to JB_Iowa's topic in Other Baseball
.. I don't have one. It was simply a note to remind us that one of the reasons games take longer overall is the added time for commercials. I realize without revenue, less games will be broadcast. But it is a factor in the math. It was also the reason for the invention of TIVO. -
Require Relievers to Face More than 1 Batter? I think I like this.
Platoon replied to JB_Iowa's topic in Other Baseball
I hate to "tinker" with the game. There are enough rules in place that are not enforced to move it along. The strke zone is the first, a swing early and swing often one would make a huge difference. As would calling only about 3 balls per game for the first week of the season for late pitches. That's all it would take. Here's one that will never be implemented! Cut the time between half innings down to 2 min. That would knock off over 15 min off the top. Oddly I kind of like the minimum of 3 batters per RP, with a reset at the start of an inning. It would change strategy, save time, and change the roster configurations. It would not be any more or less of a sacrilege than the DH rule. Hmm with a rule like that, what would be the over/under on the number of catchers Gardy would have carried?? -
Even tho I was/am one of those who think Arcia should have been left in right, I agree that LF is easier to play. (park abnormalities taken into consideration). But that fact then begs the question. Why wasn't he in LF to start with. Plus I still think he is destined for RF, possibly because of his arm? A point to be considered during all of this speculation. And it's a point the Twins internally must have considered: What is our goal for the season?? Not what is our stated goal to the unwashed masses who buy tickets, but what are we truly trying to accomplish. Get an honest answer to that question, and the discussion of who plays where will coalesce. It will also indicate the degree of rationality in the FO!

The question should be, with the assumption Buxton is in the wings, "who is the best DEFENSIVE CF the Twins can put out there"? Using offensive as a criteria in that spot, at this time is not addressing the problems that this roster bring to the field.

Hicksie is 25ish and Arcia is 23ish if I remember correctly. Ergo, Oswaldo could also be a mentoring candidate. The first rule of mentoring should be, if a guy is struggling in a position, don't take it away from him and force him across the diamond! If Arcia stays healthy and hits half of what it looks like he will, he is going to be the Twins right fielder. Defensively this is a lost year for him. Santana HAD to play CF. There was no one else at the time. Can anyone give me one reason why Hunter cannot play LF and leave Arcia in RF. It would seem to me that this move was a handshake agreement before he signed. There is no other rational reason for it.

Random thoughts: Hicks did not seem to run very good routes to balls in CF. He seems very average defensively. And he would have to hit better to be a corner outfielder. Santana looked a lot like an infielder who was a good athlete playing in the OF. Shafer looks like a better defensive choice, which to start the season is where they should go. And I am not really a huge Shafer fan. And as for the mentoring abilities of Hunter, there seems to be no evidence anecdotally of that trait. In fact the few people who would comment or speculate publicly seemed to specifically question that premise. Obviously I dont know him personally, but while he seems to be a publically affable guy, Torrii seems to be all about Torii. There is a reason he is in right, and Oswaldo has made the ill advised shift to left. And it ain't because anyone on the Twins thought it was a great idea.

Two phrases stand out>>>>. "A perceived lack of range at the corners". And >>>> Santana played an adequate CF! This is a team with offense as its strength. While I don't believe the offense will be as good as last year it's still the Twins current boasting point. As to CF, the only criteria at the beginning of the season is how fast you can get between the gaps, with a glove on your hand, and catch the ball while dodging the corner OF's.

Agree. Ryan has made it clear more than once that he is not that interested in the numbers crunching side of the game. He enjoys the game more than the business. My biggest complaint is he seems afraid to "roll the dice"! He is painstakingly slow bringing up top prospects. He seems to put more weight on rewarding loyalty than talent. But it's talent that wins games.

There is a difference between building a good farm system, and knowing when to use it. Also, losing in MLB is inevitable. But if you lose with a plan, and a purpose, at least it's palitable.

Is this anything? Josmil Pinto not coming to TwinsFest?
Platoon replied to jokin's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Maybe they will trade him for another RH starting pitcher with fastball in the low 90's, a solid 4 pitch mix, and good command of all 4 pitches. Someone has to fill that 5th spot in the rotation! -
Meyer listed as 10th best RH pitching prospect
Platoon replied to gunnarthor's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Maybe they have the Twins confused with one of the other 27 teams in the league. In just a few years Meyer will shoot up to #1 on the top prospect list of RH SP over 30! -
Article: How Secure Is Suzuki's Starting Job?
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I totally agree. I have nothing against him whatsoever. I would taken every penny and a little more. To me he would be a great back up, even on a contender. Maybe more so on a contender. My position relates to his being extended and hindering the evaluation of a Pinto. To me it is symptomatic of many other Twins decisions. When you are where they are, a bird in the hand is not necessarily as good as two in the bush. -

Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with Jokin on this. It was a time to cash in on Suzuki's aberration of a half season and sell high. Then use the last half of yet another lost year to evaluate and educate Pinto. If it works, great, if not what's the worst that can happen. The Twins were in a relatively unique place in their baseball existence. And I have never been sure, or understood who exactly they thought they were fooling by pretending that some of the moves they made were important to their future. The only person with a defensible argument for these moves was Gardy. He needed to squeeze out every win he could in 2014 to keep his job. He can hardly be blamed for making some short term decisions. But for the FO to do so is a troubling sign. -
Article: How Secure Is Suzuki's Starting Job?
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
But one of the problems is that it's not all about the money. Once you sign a guy like Suzuki to an extension, his playing time becomes a gauge on commentary on your decision making. I would not only have never extended him last year, I would have sold high. I don't know if the manager change will alleviate the problem/perception that I and I think some others have. And that is the Twins put an inordinate amount of weight to the character and likability of a player, in relation to other teams. -
Shafer can cover ground and catch the ball. That is priority número uno for theTwins in CF. I dont care if he will not hit .275, someone HAS to fill in the gaps between Hunter and Arcia. And these gaps may be worse than thought because of the inexplicable decision to move Arcia to left. If that came from the FO, and it seems it did, the only rationale is to make the acquision seem more palatable!
-
If they had not signed Hunter, this discussion would be more pertinent. But he and Arcia will keep the corners filled and Hicks or Shafer will hold down center. And you have Rosario in the wings. Then we get to the pitching! We have had the worst SP in MLB for 4 years running. We have 2 seemingly distinct groups: veteran run of the mill types (Hughes a possible exception TBD) and promising youth with big arms. The veterans will never yield a satisfactory return, and this is a team which really should not at this stage even consider trading a young pitching prospect. I know it makes for a boring "hot stove" season, but the Twins should stand pat, let ST play itself out, and by June set their final course for 2016. Despite an unfortunate sequence of variables,I had hoped that this would have been done a year ago. Better late than never!

I have a 1987 Yugo for sale, which my mother only drove on days that ended with the letter "y"! Actually none of this is true, but I could not help myself. It's Friday and I am in a weird mood. It must be the polar eclipse!

"He's not good enough to build around". My point is that he is good enough to be part of a legitimate contender. I would take him any day. This is not a knock on "The Hair God". This is an observation that a team buit of 8 BD level players would not be successful. He quit hitting home runs the minute they figured out that almost everyone he hit was off a high, almost out of, or out the strike zone pitch. Besides the obvious fact that pitching rules, you need a couple position studs. BD is a very nice ball player. But he is not in the stud category. (Hair comments will not be tolerated). . I agree with the first part of your last sentence, he is good enough to build with. But not the around part.
-
I think it's sad, not because of Dozier, but because if he is our BEST position player, that leaves the rest of them behind. You could easily win a World Series with Brian Dozier in your lineup. You cannot win the World Series with 7 other Dozier level players on the field. He is over rated in Twins Land because we have become very used to mediocrity in this market. And that extends to virtually every statewide sports entity that has a MN zip code. In any other market, a manager who said the boys were "battlin their tails off" after yet another loss, would have been gone long before this. Sorry to have wandered slightly off topic, but it goes to the heart of over/under rating.

Article: How Secure Is Suzuki's Starting Job?
Platoon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't know about other years, or other pitchers, but pitch framing statistics when catching Samuel Deduno might be one of the most overrated metrics of all time. It's just another mystifying case of Gardy's mentality. You put your "worst" catcher in to catch your hardest to catch pitcher. And you put your "best" catcher in to sit in a rocking chair, catching the guy who has the lowest walk rate in MLB history. Perhaps that's why my driver training school for NASCAR drivers is off to such a slow start? -
As my 4 yr old granddaughter is fond of saying when asked, "how did that work for you?" NOT VERY GOOD lol
