  1. So? They could re-sign him. They could re-evaluate Sano at third. Park might prove he belongs in the majors. There might be better external options. I don't know if they really need to worry about 2018 before worrying about 2017. I think it's probably enough to know that Vargas isn't the answer. Look. I don't know if Napoli is the best option. I am pretty much the low man on Vargas but I like Park more than most and would give him another shot. But I'm not smarter than Levine or Falvey. They have a pretty good idea of both the talent level and what makes a team better. (Those aren't necessarily the same). And I'm not going to complain if the team adds more talent and is forced to kick away lesser players.
  2. They'll likely trade Bruce. De Aza isn't much. They'll be a bit screwed in CF but it'll probably be a Cespedes/Granderson/Conforto OF.
  3. Well good for him and the Phillies.
  4. No one thinks Hunter is worth 10-20 million. But a solid clubhouse might help teams from underachieving. I know you like baseruns. The 2015 team was a 76 win baserun team, the 2016 team was a 71 win baserun team. This Twins team was brutal to watch and it did seem to observers that the players generally didn't give a ****. I don't see why the idea of improving the clubhouse culture is even remotely controversial. Every article about the current T-Wolves is a version of 'they have to learn to win.' I think we should give Park another shot but seeing how he hits AAA pitching for a month might not be the worst idea. Vargas is not a ML quality player. Mauer is almost done and fragile. They'll probably need to improve their options at 1B/DH.
  5. No one says those things but nearly everyone believes those things. I don't like WAR and I use it a lot to say Player A is better than Player B except in strange weird circumstances. Hell, a whole generation of writers/bloggers have rallied around it to keep Jack Morris out of the Hall of Fame. Writers constantly use it say why one person should have won MVP. There is very rarely any more depth than that. Esp in our Hot Take culture.
  6. Yeah, this is sort of how I feel. I thought last years team gave up pretty early in the season. Sure, you can complain about the roster all you want but that team massively under achieved. Molitor doesn't seem able to fix/understand it so maybe you find some vocal clubhouse leaders who can. I don't know if it'll work but it's worth trying.
  7. Well, Marlon Byrd was hitting .237/.286/.448 with 23 HR and traded from Cincy to SF in so Napoli could have value. Teams value power down the stretch. If he's hitting like that, the return wouldn't be much but some team would probably give up something. Not sure how often DH's get moved but it's fairly common. Probably a couple a year - last year Beltran was picked up by the Rangers and used almost exclusively at DH. Steve Pearce was a 1B/DH guy that was moved. The year before you saw guys like Byrd and Napoli moved. I agree with your last part which is why I'd rather go with Park.
  8. At which point Napoli would be traded, if he's good, or released, if he's not.
  9. Meh. WAR for a DH guy like him probably isn't the best measurement. Other numbers are also scary - he struck out nearly 200 times last year and he could be done offensively. On the other hand, maybe his RH pull power plays up in TF. He's certainly not a great fit but he won't be expensive - he made 7m last year and probably won't make much more this year and if the team is getting him it's because they think he can help in the locker room like Hunter did in 2015. Obviously, you don't think that's a real thing but it does seem like people in baseball think it's a real thing. So, we'll see. As I said, I'd rather see what Park can do but I won't bash a one year deal for Napoli.
  10. Isn't a Napoli signing the kind of signing people are claiming the Twins should do? Sign a vet and flip him for value at the deadline like the Cubs did? The Twins have a bunch of DH/1B options but, frankly, none of them are good and few have upside. I like Park and would like to see him get another chance but Vargas shouldn't be part of our plans. Mauer is nearly cooked. They should give Sano the entire season at third base. Grossman can take a walk but is probably best suited for a bench role. So I'd rather they role the dice with Park but if they brought in Napoli, I would understand it.
  11. I'm not the biggest Rosario fan but he could be a starting caliber OF on a good team. I agree with Sickels that, unless he changes his BB/K approach, 2015 is his high water mark but I think he can move the needle a little on both. He also has the ability to be a pretty good defender and base runner. I'm not quite ready to give up on him but I'm also ok if they try and upgrade and make him play his way back into the regular line-up. And he should never face LH pitching again.
  12. That would make more sense but Sean said wins. It's in the article Pos links to. http://joeposnanski.com/baseball-reference-war-a-response/ "We state clearly that we don’t find differences of 1-2 wins to be definitive."
  13. Wow, 27.5m/year for his age 31-34 seasons. I think that's a fair (market) deal but he has some warts on him and this could blow up on the Mets. Salaries are getting a lot bigger. The Pohlad family isn't going to be thrilled in a few years.
  14. I dunno. I could see an IF behind a slow moving pitcher with control problems being a step slow on a play or two. Anyone remember how Buerhle's defenses always seemed ready to go compared to, say, Pelfrey? Bad weather or carrying an at-bat into the field could muck something up. I don't know if we have enough evidence to suggest that a player's defense is the same, game to game. Esp since the player might get 4 chances one night, 8 the next and 3 the day after.
  15. Oh good. I was hoping this thread would devolve into BS "Hunter is racist" and "started a fight" stuff and it's just PR and was not disappointed.
  16. This should probably be a different thread but I suspect that we haven't heard much on him for a few reasons. First, the Twins might not be moving him at all. Second, they are probably waiting for the market to get set, and third, they will probably have discussions about him at the winter meetings next week.
  17. What really surprised me was the acknowledgement that a 1-2 win difference isn't definitive. I thought that was much smaller - like .5 win. If it's 1-2, it's almost useless.
  18. Posnanski had a follow up piece on this as well. http://joeposnanski.com/a-bit-more-on-war/
  19. Yeah, Jackson had a few more extra base hits but their avg/obp were pretty close and Garbe showed much better bb/k ratios while playing in more games. I think that's fairly comparable.
  20. I think if you are equating hiring three former Twins (who last played for the org in 2015, 2011 and 2001) to be equal to hiring Falvey and Levine then we have real problems. Those shouldn't be 1:1 comparisons.
  21. Actually, Garbe put up similar numbers as a 20 year old in A+ with a lot less strike outs. Not sure what his wRC+ would have been.
  22. But when are you looking at? Most of the minor league coaches and staff have come in after 2012 and have been producing very good results both in minor league wins but also player development. Most of the current ML staff has came in around 2014. I think Molitor should go but ... Part of this burn it all down mentality doesn't stand up because people don't know what they want to burn down. Klaw, of all people, has nothing but good things to say about both the Twins scouting and development departments, for example. Brad Stiel has done a pretty good job since taking over in 2012. I don't think he should go. I'm on the fence on Johnson but know enough to know I don't know enough.
  23. I dunno. The team hasn't been absolute garbage since 1991 so you sort of lose a lot of your validity. Falvey and Levine are in charge. They seem to think that Hunter et al can help. This isn't because they were former Twins. It's because they've seen it work in Cleveland and in Texas. That's what they are attempting to do here.
