  1. I would feel a lot better about this deal if Murphy appeared to have more upside. It always is risky to trade the guy who might end up really good for a guy who might end up competent. I still think Hicks has a good chance of ending up really good.
  2. I am not a fan of this deal. I like Hicks future, and I'm underwhelmed by Murphy. I hope he hits more than I think he will.
  3. Proof positive we shouldn't play Park in the middle infield!
  4. Dexter Fowler got a QO. Rasmus got a QO. A one year, $16m contract for a starting infielder isn't that big of a deal. As of today, not even one player has accepted a QO. Ever. Teams don't offer a QO unless there's literally little downside. Besides which, that's a long time, and another MLB-MLBPA contract negotiation away. There might be a different system in place by then. A 2018 QO should be pretty far down the list of things to consider in the "trade Plouffe" discussion. "Does it make the 2016 team better" should be number 1-5 on that list.
  5. It is a sad statement of affairs if .300/.380/.410 is truly the best one can dream and hope for from a big league first baseman.
  6. As stated early in this thread, Wieters appears to be the best of a rather poor set of choices. They can kick the can down the road with someone like AJ, but that's no guarantee to help win in 2016, and also means they're looking for catching next winter, when the options might be even worse.
  7. According to MLBtraderumors, Wieters did indeed get a QO, so will require draft pick compensation from the team that signs him.
  8. I'd rather have Cuddyer than Robinson as the extra outfielder.
  9. When did over 30 become the point at which all baseball players cease to be productive?
  10. It seems to me the cost of one Twins starter, as part of a package, to acquire a catcher that may or may not help at some point in the future, far exceeds the cost of money and a draft pick. Anyway, Barnes might not even end up at catcher, and Sanchez doesn't hit.
  11. I am opposed to continually sorting through dumpsters as the primary source for bullpen arms. Similarly, I don't see the benefits of doing the same to fill a position, particularly one as important as catcher. A one year flyer on someone unlikely to help win games isn't a solution to anything.
  12. Wieters seems like the best answer out there among a bunch of not so great options. My second choice would be Lucroy. What I expect from the Twins is one of the cheap FA options which won't do much to shore up the position short term and nothing to shore up the position long term.
  13. I said "Casilla-types". And it was in response to a post claiming Santana has "the same kind of upside." Anyway, for the record, when Casilla played, it was mostly as a starter, not as a backup. The Twins took way too long to decide he wasn't ever going to be an effective major leaguer, and I hope they don't continue to make that kind of mistake. I don't have a problem giving him a shot as a spare part. He'll, I didn't have a problem starting him at SS last spring. But if that fails, don't let inertia, loyalty, or something else drag the problem out for a few years.
  14. Actually, an unhealthy reliance on Casilla-types was a primary reason the Twins always seemed overmatched in the postseason. I would be fine with Santana as the futility infielder in 2016, but be ready to dump him if necessary.
  15. I concur 100percent on the "blocking" thing. But for the record, Morneau didn't leave as a free agent.
  16. Morneau might or might not be a fit, but if Plouffe is traded, DH becomes a need, and I don't trust Arcia or Vargas any farther than I can throw them. I wouldn't even think twice about "blocking" either of them, particularly since Arcia should be in the OF if you're dead set on giving him more rope.
  17. I'm happy I got to watch his last season. I've said this before, but I'll repeat myself...Hunter is one of my favorite Twins of all time. He never once gave me the impression he wanted anything more than to win, and he was willing to do whatever he could, each and every day, to make that happen. Kept himself in top shape, would run through a catcher or into a wall, ran out every ground ball, and genuinely seemed to appreciate his good fortune to play baseball for a living. He can retire knowing he left nothing on the field. I'm sure he'll be good at whatever he chooses to do. I think he'd be great on TV.
  18. Possibly. Let's hope "all other angles" do not fail to materialize. That, IMO, would constitute a failure by Ryan. A poor "plan C" may be better than nothing, but is still a poor plan. And a team serious about contention does not voluntarily open the season with a Suzuki/Pierzynski tandem as plan A.
  19. No, Im too lazy. But off the top of my head, just in RH HOFers in my lifetime, I can think of Pedro Martinez, Tom Seaver, Catfish Hunter, Greg Maddux, and Bob Gibson all 6'1" or less. It's just my opinion, but height would be low on my list of things that are important in a pitcher.
  20. And when the exceptions get too numerous, it's time to question the rule.
  21. Not to mention, what is the actual difference in "downward plane" between a guy 5'10" and a guy 6'10" from 60 ft away? Can't be much.
  22. If your plan is to build your way out of a rebuild, that's going to really hurt even a short run of success. "Make your own ace(s)" sounds great, but isn't something you can just choose to do. Buying one, however,is relatively easy.
  23. I'd spend the money. The Twins can afford it, and otherwise it'll just go unspent.
  24. If anyone plans to attend AFL games, let me know. I'll be making the trip up to Phoenix, haven't decided when. If I have a TDer or two there to BS with, that'll make my trip.
