  1. I'm not sure a few weeks of side sessions tells a whole ton more than 4 spring training innings to be honest. I think they have multiple mediocre starting pitchers on long term contracts, wanted a lefty in the rotation, who all stayed healthy this Spring, so he never had a shot. If he was given a real shot this Spring, he wouldn't have been sent to minor league camp in mid-March. I'll stick with my point that it's laughable to suggest his command in 3 weeks, and 4 official innings this Spring told them he couldn't pitch in the majors yet.
  2. I'm not really interested in your hearsay, but thanks for sharing. I'm interested in results, and he had a phenomenal 2015 coming off of a missed season, and his conditioning was never an issue.
  3. Yeah, its a shame he made no effort this winter. Wonder if he even picked up a bat. Oh, wait... "After ending his Dominican Winter League stint after just 15 games in early December, Sano spent several weeks working with San Francisco Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto and several minor leaguers. Twins first-base coach Butch Davis, who also handles the team’s outfielders, made a two-week visit to the Dominican to work with Sano, as did minor-league strength-and-conditioning coordinator Erik Beiser. Sano would start his daily workouts at 6 a.m., pushing himself through conditioning drills until 10. From there, he’d chase fly balls for a couple of hours. After lunch, he’d head back to the field for batting practice. He wouldn’t stop until he’d put in at least six hours every day."
  4. I'm curious how you know what kind of shape he is in? Was he struggling with conditioning last year when he had a .916 OPS in his 1st taste of the majors? What is his body fat %?
  5. Agree, I think Kepler will get 400+ plate appearances this year, I think many may come at the expense of a guy you didn't have on your list; Rosario. I was more responding to the post about having to get something for Plouffe. I think theoretically they could be a better lineup without him (because of the whole Sano rf issue)
  6. Certainly a fair opinion, I don't think either of us are clearly right or wrong. I'm not upset Kepler isn't on the Opening Day roster or anything, I get it. I just think the lineup is awfully right handed, and worry about who is going to get on base. I also don't value Plouffe to the point where he's someone I have to keep unless they get top value in return.
  7. I'm talking over the entire season, not merely April. I think Plouffe's bat is redundant in this lineup, low obp, some HR power, right handed. I think Kepler would be more than capable of being a top 2-3 obp guy this season.
  8. I don't think looking at WAR in this situation is necessarily right. I think its fair to assume the infield defense would be worse, and the OF defense would be much better, with Sano at 3b and Kepler in RF. I think from a lineup stand point, Kepler is the left handed bat they lack, and would certainly be more than capable of exceeding the low to mid .700's ops that Plouffe puts up (higher obp, potentially lower slg%, but debateable). That said, its not going to happen... so I will hope for the best.
  9. Right. Personally I think its a better team with Sano at 3B and Kepler in RF. I hope Plouffe surprises me since he obviously is not going anywhere.
  10. Ditto, but Fien appears to be their right handed Brian Duensing. Will be kept around much longer than his usefulness.
  11. You said he "He still absolutely hates how they handle promotions, prospect timelines, and what not." Yeah, he thinks Berrios is ready, and he'll probably be up in April or early May. I would hardly say that is evidence of that he hates how they handle promotions and timelines. Yeah I think you misunderstood the Kepler line, he has said he is probably ready, but there isn't a spot for him immediately, and he'll still probably get 400 at bats this year. ABW isn't a prospect, him playing in low A when he probably should've been in high a is fairly meaningless Disagreeing with a singular move or two is far different than what you said, that he "hates how they handle promotions, prospect timelines"
  12. I have read basically everything he has written for years now, and this just isn't true at all. Do you have any evidence of this?
  13. I don't think anyone has claimed Berrios is for sure ahead of Duffey in the pecking order, I won't be shocked if Duffey is up in April, and Berrios not until May. That being said, Berrios is a better pitcher than Duffey, which is why you hear more talk about wanting to get him in the rotation ASAP.
  14. Yeah, one of the most absurd things I've read on here. Totally justifiable to have Berrios in AAA, if I were running things I would as well... until late April. To act like his command in 4 official innings, and a few unofficial Spring innings made him "lose out" is such a laughable statement.
  15. I'm unclear why there is so much angst recently about the 40 man roster, and lack of "room". Anyone have a red marker to hand me, I'll cross some names off that 40 man if a need for a spot (Berrios, Burdi) arises in the next month. Pat Dean Ryan O'Rourke - nice loogy, but not much value with a 12 man staff, especially if they prefer Abad. And Melotakis is on the way Michael Tonkin - I'm fine keeping him for now, but not going to lose much sleep over losing him JR Graham - see above Casey Fien - not going to happen, but its my list... see ya
  16. Over. I'm actually surprised how many people are down on the Tigers on this board. Keep in mind, this was a .500 team last year at the All Star break before giving up. I think Castellanos has a breakout year, they score a ton of runs. Anibal Sanchez bounces back somewhat, same with Victor Martinez, they've got a solid top 2 in the rotation, a much better bullpen, Daniel Norris on the way. Also with all the aging roster, I think they have tons of incentive to go for it this year if they are in it at the break. I'll say somewhere between 84-87 wins, not enough to win the division but in Wild card race to the end
  17. BTW - I don't believe he changed any of his top 50 prospects, its the same list he posted in early Feb, I think he just was giving an update on where they would all be starting the season.
  18. Ha - I think he may get a good laugh at judging a player on a few spring training innings.
  19. Mike Trout showed up to Spring Training in 2013 weighing 240 pounds. Don't tell Reusse he went .326/.399/.564, hit 30 home runs, stole 49 bases, and led all of baseball in WAR. Here's a funny quote from back then by an unnamed AL Scout (Perhaps in hindsight, it was the Twins scout Reusse talked to) "He lost (MVP) to a guy who won the Triple Crown. I think he realizes steals and defense aren't as valued. Trout's got a competitive fire we like, but if he thinks he's got to hit more homers or drive in runs to get it, I'm not sure that helps the Angels. He's never going to win an RBI title leading off and maybe he's eaten his way out of it."
  20. He's SUPER sensitive on Twitter. I was blocked by him 2 years ago; I think it was late April 2014, he was gushing about Colabello, who at the time was having a good April. I made an innocent response to one of his tweets, about how Colabello likely wouldn't even be starting by mid to late May, I think Pinto and Arcia were on the DL at the time... He mocked me endlessly, like his usual response is to people who disagree with him "yeah right, sit down 25 rbi's", etc. I replied when Colabello was sent down to AAA later in the season asking what the current RBI total was... blocked. It's humorous that these big bad columnists that love to mock, ridicule, troll, have the thinnest skin of all.
  21. He's unpolished in RF likely because he has never played there. If you and Reusse are so bothered by voluntary workouts, any ideas why there hasn't been a column on any of the other 20 some odd players who weren't in Fort Meyers weeks before the mandatory reporting date. Maybe even a guy that wasn't the best player on the team from the moment he joined it? Maybe a closer that has broken down year after year? Maybe a 2B that collapsed 2 years in a row? Maybe a 1B who has struggled for years now?
  22. You kind of just summed up every persons thoughts who thought this column was a hack job. How in the heck does Reusse know Sano's drive to be great. Because he showed up to a camp where he had a .500 OBP weighing a few more pounds than he expected? Pathetic jump to conclusion and insulting insinuation
  23. You don't see the difference between discussing an actual on field component of the game (which we have seen in Spring Training, btw) and discussing whether he wants to be great because he attended an autograph signing and went home to the Dominican for 2 weeks?
  24. The evidence; I was here for 2½ weeks in early February and was at the ballpark most days to do a radio show. Sano was doing low-key drills with early arrivers for a couple of days, and then he was gone. The word was he had gone to New York for a weekend for a well-paid autograph gig, and he would be back early the next week. He wound up going back to the Dominican Republic and stayed for two weeks, until camp was ready to open. The conclusion; "He’s simply the Big Kid, until he begins to take his shot at greatness more seriously." So according to Reusse, Sano does not take his shot at greatness seriously because he went to an autograph signing, and went home for 2 weeks. How in any way is that a reasonable conclusion to draw? Until there is actual evidence of this perceived lack of seriousness, like you know, struggling on the field, I will continue to file this away as trash like most of what Reusse writes.
  25. Thanks, I hadn't dug around much yet but that's what I was afraid of
