  1. It's poorly written and poorly thought out. It appears like it took him 10 minutes to write that.
  2. Plawecki's stats: 156 AB, .372/.459/.583 with 17 doubles, 2 triples, and 4 homers. He has walked 20 times and struck out only 6 times. And he is a good defensive catcher. Plawecki has a higher OPS than Zunino. Less power, yes, but the BB/K rate difference is pretty vast.
  3. Chris Herrmann will be the guy to take over for Ryan Doumit, but he can catch more and will be a better overall batter than Doumit is. Mauer is NOT going to be removed from catching altogether. This conversation has gotten ridiculous. The Twins should, again, look at Kevin Plawecki for pick 42 and draft two pitchers in their first two picks.
  4. Butera will catch every time Pavano pitches. That's how stupid this season has become.
  5. Totally disagree. Swarzak has been poor as a starter this season. And he hadn't been good in the minors since 2007. Other than last year, Diamond has been good. Not great, but good.
  6. On base guy who generally walks more than he strikes out. That much is good. I don't like not being able to stash him at AAA for a few months, but whatever.
  7. In looking up who the Yankees might call up for relief help (Kevin Whelan, perhaps) instead of the ludicrous notion that they would trade anything of value for Matt Capps, I noticed that in 86 at bats for Scranton/W-B, Steve Pearce is going ape with a 1.055 OPS. Sure glad the Twins make preposterous roster judgments based on spring training performance . . .
  8. As there are other pitchers besides those top 3 college pitchers, there are also plenty of other catchers to draft.
  9. By the way, I wouldn't be totally surprised if the Yankees brought Rivera back next year on some sort of goodbye final relief outing. I sure hope something like that happens.
  10. Unlike the Twins, the Yankees might (quite ironically) realize that they can get Cappsesque relief help for a fraction of Capps' cost. There is zero chance that they are going to foolishly pursue Matt Capps.
  11. Even with 2011's Rochester numbers, in 1414 plate appearances in AAA, Plouffe's OPS is .767 and before 2011 he was consistently around .720-.730 in the minors. That makes last year's .697 OPS seem fairly spot-on. Is that level of production what is desired from a potential RF candidate?
  12. The Yankees are not so desperate to trade for a true middle reliever and make him Mariano Rivera's successor.
  13. are better than Thomas and Plouffe? The Twins added Mastroianni and Ramirez in the offseason, seemingly to be big league potential talent. Instead neither has been promoted to the Twins while Thomas and Plouffe have been terrible for the Twins (aside from turning one great double play for Plouffe). Hughes and Burroughs were at the bottom of the OPS leaders and next . . . Thomas and Plouffe!
  14. Hendriks has to work on mixing his pitches appropriately, because he hits his spots. I don't totally hate the idea that he does that with the Twins, actually, but Rochester may be best for him.
  15. Two guys, with Slama, who should be with the Twins by Saturday.
  16. I like that James is performing a bit well right now. I expected him to be struggling more than this right now. Good for him.
  17. There are simple roster TRIES out there and this straight up pisses me off that nothing has changed. Maybe they don't end up as solutions, but something has to be attempted. Over the next month there are 10 players worthy of a potential trial with the Twins. In order, they are: Anthony Slama Darin Mastroianni Jeff Manship Scott Diamond Cole DeVries Matt Carson Ray Chang P.J. Walters Deolis Guerra Michael Hollimon None of them are prospects other than Diamond and Guerra, technically, but these may be serviceable players.
  18. Hitting better, but Carroll is still getting on base more. And I would expect the law of averages to apply. Carroll is not going to bat .210 or whatever and when that jumps to .260 (perfectly reasonable), his OPS will be higher than Casilla's. But that doesn't even matter. Carroll will have value next year in whatever role and Casilla will be due for $2-3 million. Total waste of money if Dozier is ready at $450K. And I mentioned that Parmelee should be in Rochester.
  19. Ok, I gotcha. That makes more sense.
  20. Anyone know the lowest population for a city with a AAA, AA, etc. team? One problem is that only the Midwest League and the International League are really regionally available for Minnesota teams to be a part of. Maybe a F-M team could make sense in the Pioneer League or whatever that Montana-heavy league is. Better than E-Town, certainly.
  21. To Fort Myers? Yes, it is too early (but he definitely should get at least a taste there in July or August). I know you mean the Twins, but that is not a serious consideration.
  22. Fair enough, but note in that article that somehow when giving OBP 1.8 times the value of Slugging in OPS', the prediction of runs scored is better. I am not sure how that works when slugging, as you noted is a tiny bit more predictive. I agree that they are similar overall with flip-floppy OBP and SLG numbers in their careers, but whereas one is two years younger and hitting well in Rochester and the other has been completely terrible for the Twins, I think it is reasonable to conclude that if they were given the same number of plate appearances this year, Mastroianni would out-perform. And there is a log-jam in Rochester with Tosoni being back as well. And Parmelee is going to have to go back too.
  23. He even played a minimum amount of first base in 2010 and earlier, I believe. He really probably is a backup at all four positions.
  24. Getting on base is the most important skill as a batter in baseball. There is no disputing this. SET THE DAMN TABLE, MASTRO!!!!! Please. Good lord, the Twins don't have that going for them at all. They have three guys above a .316 OBP and number 4 is BEN REVERE. That is disturbing (by the way, those three guys should be batting 1, 2, and 3). Point is there is just no way that Mastroianni would play as terribly as Thomas, and he would probably be better than what the Twins had in Jason Repko. And they probably could just spell Span with him at the top of the lineup. And he is a lower-tier prospect/talent as far as impact goes than Revere, so Revere should spend more time working on batting. Same can be said for Florimon vs. Dozier as well. Hell, I thought that Mastroianni, Ramirez, and Florimon were signed precisely to be the guys to fill in on the Twins roster instead of prospects/young players (Parmelee, Revere) and joke chumps (Thomas).
  25. I agree. Shuffle in about 5 guys immediately. A couple might not stick, but there are others to come up. End Rochester this year with: 1. Revere, LF 2. Herrmann, C 3. Dozier, SS 4. Benson, CF 5. Parmelee, 1B 6. Hicks (yes), RF 7. Tosoni, DH 8. Romero, 3B 9. Nishioka, 2B And Hendriks (maybe he can return to the Twins sooner . . . ), Bromberg, Wimmers, Stuifbergen, and Hirschfield/Albers/Darnell in the end of season rotation. See what they do there and get them prepared to replace the nonsense that is: Clete Thomas Trevor Plouffe Alexi Casilla Drew Butera Jason Marquis Scott Baker Anthony Swarzak and potentially Doumit and Valencia
