  1. Great person, great player. Can't wait to see him again!
  2. Rodney was promised the closer's job and it's his job to lose. If he is lights out, great. If not, the Twins have Reed. Twins fans are strangely underrating closers even after seeing Joe Nathan's magic (or maybe some of you are too young to really understand what he was bringing to the table...) In any case, I think there is a lot to like about what the Twins did here.
  3. I'm not sure about Kepler, but yeah 2018 is the year for him to start rocking if he can.
  4. Let's just give Rosario the opportunity to hit more dingers in more playoff games, no? His defensive drop off is a concern, but I'm sure the Twins see it and will work on it. Maybe Rosario is being a bit lazy with Buxton over there and just needs a wake up call/some inspiration to play better.
  5. This is shaping up to be a decent offseason as far as rebuilding the bullpen is concerned. Add in a 3+ starter or two and the Twins will have to be taken seriously by everyone in the division.
  6. It would have been fun to see some "great finishes" from past MN teams when they were in MN. The Lakers had 5 championships in MN. The North Stars never won a championship but they had a very interesting (and brutal) history. And of course the Kicks were dominant for that one year or two before the league split up the season in a weird way and caused the league's demise (rule #1, don't confuse your fans).......
  7. The Vikings are still lacking a "great finish." Let's see how they play against Philly. I think they can handle whoever the AFC team ends up being, esp. at home.
  8. Boshers is a LOOGY under a manager who doesn't understand how to use a LOOGY. Of his 38 appearances, only 5 were to one batter and 7 to two. He pitched to more than 3 batters sixteen times! Boshers would be OK on a different team, but even then he would be the first guy cut to make room for someone else.
  9. Kirby Puckett ... Hm ... haven't heard of him. I'll have to check him out.
  10. Rodney is not too happy about this. Levine said he thinks he was "ahead of the market" on Rodney, which is an epic way of saying "oops." But at least he fixed the problem (albeit by spending more money).
  11. Absolutely. If the Twins think Buxton will be a star and they think they can field a team that can compete in the playoffs outside of Buxton, seal the deal.
  12. Polanco's season was far from tragic, but he did have a slow start. Like the rest of the team he had an awesome August. The Twins need to bottle up whatever happened in August and use it liberally next year. I know Polanco can do it. He's still young and still learning. I'm very excited about his future, but let's hope he doesn't spend too long in the batting doldrums like he did last year....
  13. Based on his oWAR of 2.7, the only two players who had a better year offensively for the Twins are Dozier and Sano. Plus, Buxton is still getting better. If you are going to use OPS as your measurement (which is fair enough), Buxton had a .583 OPS in the first half and a .893 OPS in the second half. I understand that we want to see consistency, but all signs indicate that he is continuing to improve offensively. His work ethic is just too insane for a big fall off to happen. The concern is injuries. If he puts up another 135+ games next year, good enough ... think about extending him. Good things will happen with Buxton in a Twins uniform.
  14. I love the idea of getting the cornerstone players on long contracts, but I feel like doing this without addressing the pitching is a waste of time. Buxton will get a long term deal at some point.
  15. As a whole, I think the Twins have been pretty good base runners for a while. They may or may not be the best at it, but they can apply enough pressure on the opposing team to where they have to take Twins baserunners seriously.
  16. We'll find out soon. It will be good to know one way or the other so we can move on to the next thing.
  17. Garver will get a chance, but Molitor seems to get frustrated quickly by mistakes on defense. The Twins clearly like his bat as evidenced by him playing 3 positions + DH last year in a small sample, but if Garver wants to stick around he has to catch/defend well.
  18. I'm betting he could still play, so he should be a fresh perspective in the clubhouse. It seems like "special assistants" are mostly only around during spring training, though.
  19. Sano's bat-fu is legit. His offense won't tank. I don't care about his defense because I realize he is not in the MLB for his glove. The Twins need to figure out the same. Sano is in the 2.5% of players whose defense is irrelevant -- the Twins have not had such a player since Ortiz Killebrew so they simply don't know how to handle it.
  20. Usually I would be a skeptic of a small sample size change, i.e., being a bad defender for a year. But dang, Rosario was bad last year, and a drop off this steep is a concern. He does not hit anywhere near well enough to defend this poorly. There is no question the Twins are going to have him work on his defense next year. If he can be an average defender again and keep improving offensively, he's a 3+ bWAR guy.
  21. We'll see. He is *so bad* v. lefties, it has to get better. If he can maintain the other parts of his game and figure out how to do something against lefties (either hitting for power, average, or both), he'll be fine. I'm betting Mauer would be a great asset to help Kepler figure this out, if anyone important is reading this.
  22. True, but unfortunately he was out of options. The Twins F.O. at the time kept him in the low minors for a very long time, longer than it looked necessary by his numbers.
  23. Vargas runs up the count. His most common at bat has a 2-2 count, with 1-2 and 3-2 being next up. This is good. He needs to hit better when at 0-2, 1-2, 2-2 however. With any other count he is Dangerous with a capital D. More experience should fix that.
  24. It's common for young players to have to adjust to MLB-level lefties. But Kepler is off the charts on the bad side when it comes to his performance v. lefties. Being this bad is probably an aberration that can be corrected, but he needs a hell of a lot of practice. I'm guessing he isn't seeing the ball well if at all.
