  1. I can't answer a single of these questions. I think 90% of the problem he last few years have been communication. They knew payroll was going to come down, they certainly knew after the 2011 and 2012 seasons that they weren't going to spend any money......but they should have just been honest about where we were in the cycle. "We had our runs and we are devastated that we did not win the world series, but given where we are we have to re-tool our roster. What that will mean in the interim period is we are going to promote some people from the farm team in order to field the best team in the future. Replacing veterans with young talented players will mean a lower payroll the next few years" Instead we got "we are not rebuilding, we are going to field a team that can win next year and payroll is no limitation". This communication miss is on Dave St. Peter, unless the ownership group would not allow him to be honest. Now I know someone is going to say the problem is wins and that is right. But at the end of the 2011 season, knowing we won 65 games, veterans were bolting, and we weren't going to spend......this was very predictable and the fan base should have been told that.
  2. Or about a third. Then they could say...aw shucks. We were willing to pay Morales abut we weren't in contention.
  3. What percentage of that relates to Phil Hughes? What was the return on Twins that we low-balled that left? Cuddy, Morneau, etc.
  4. I agree to an extent. But I aslo thought the cycle of high payroll when we think we are going to contend, followed by 5-6 years of low payroll with the oh goodie, we may add mid-season if we are in the playoff race thing would change with the stadium. I agree overall with Mike, the Twins need to hire a good PR firm and coach them. The first thing they would do is some fan polling. They would find a skeptical/dissapointed fan base, based on the last 15 or so years. Start with contraction and work your way to this point. Given that, they should not be making comments about how they don't have any money, the payroll decline should "not be much", etc. Hopefully their consultants would also question the credentials of Dave St. Peter.
  5. You got me, but the broader point I believe is valid. Most probably thought payroll would move up more with a new stadium. I certainly did. The Twin Cities would make the 18th largest city in the US (add Mpls and St. Paul) together. Many of the cities ahead of us don't have a team and most the others don't have a brand new stadium. Would you have expected a 3 position increase and been OK with it? For me, the bigger rub is Miller's article sounds like payroll CANT increase next year. That is a bigger issue. In a perfect world, they would find a sucker for Nolasco and sign a better pitcher and payroll would be flat because we want young players to play next year. Many on these boards would be okay with that. But if we want to have better pitching but we can't afford Ervin Santana and sign another scrub.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_population
  6. Last 5 years in the Dome, we averaged 21st in payroll. 2005 - 20th 2006 - 19th 2007 - 18th 2008 - 25th 2009 - 24th Target Field 2010 - 11th 2011 - 9th 2012 - 13th 2013 - 22nd 2014 - 24th Let's assume a flat payroll for 2015 and another 24th place finish.....our six year average in Target field would be 21st. We were actually 18th in both 2003 and 2004 as well, so using those years would have lowered the Dome ranking. I don't want to speak for everyone else, but I would have expected the Twins to move up in team payroll. http://www.stevetheump.com/Payrolls.htm
  7. Guys, Guys Guys...come on. They said they will have the ability to add in season if we are in contention. What more could we ask for?
  8. I don't think 3-18-21 is out of the question right now or after next year....if we wanted to extend him. I think we need another solid year first....but if Sano doesn't cut it at 3B I don't think this is a huge drain on payroll. If Sano is not a 3B and Plouffe leaves....we have to go out in the market and make a Mike Lamb or Jamey Carroll type....more than half the of the cost of Plouffe without any production.
  9. Yeah, the two guys in question will make about $3M this year.....so it is not a huge pressing issue. This should not prevent any other moves.
  10. I never said Santana will be a career .319 hitter, in contention for the batting crown year in and year out. But the difference between Santana's career .319 average and Escobar's .255 is quite large. As well as perceived upside.
  11. Near 4 WAR position players don't grow on trees. The four teams still playing have I think 7 position players with a higher WAR than Plouffe (I looked a few days ago). It is the willingness to toss Plouffe aside I don't understand.
  12. Completely agree. When it comes to 3B, it is kind of like don't quit your job until you have a new one.
  13. I don't know that this has been settled. Escobar, even with the year he had has a career .255 average with a .666 OPS. His BABIP this year was .336 as well versus a career .313.
  14. It seems to me Gardy would play a good defensive SS that hit .250 (all singles) over a guy that was OK to bad defensively that would hit .300 with some pop. Let's say the .300 guy is Santana and both players get 600 AB. The .300 hitter will get 30 more hits and 10-12 of those are probably extra base hits (on top of more doubles and HR overall). It seems unlikely to me that the improved defense from the .250 hitter would not make up for that difference, say 50 more total bases.
  15. I think that used to be the case more in the past. It seems like teams are using the fall league now for rehab of good pitchers as well. Alex Meyer last year for the Twins for example. Yesterdays game had Archie Bradley on the River Rafters team and Tajuan Walker for the other team. Buxton went 2-4 with a 2B. Eddie 1-4 with a 2B.
  16. If your opinion about Santana's defense is valid (I have no idea because I haven't seen him enough at SS), then I put the 2014 CF debacle on Terry Ryan, not Gardy. Unless of course Terry has also concluded he will never be a short stop. In which case, $#^&.
  17. This seems to be the point of the year we wish we still had these guys around, but then again we seem to sign replacements that are just as good. I think these guys are pretty replaceable. You have a lot of 28-31 year olds that can fill in when needed.
  18. "and the rest of the Twins position player’s athleticism, to roam their outfield". Sounds like a bit of ying and yang between the big club and minors:
  19. My thought was always that gardy stressed defense too much at catcher and ss. I would expect pinto to get more reps at catcher and the sky won't fall. Maybe, just maybe the offense will offset the defense.
  20. Good to know the innings we gave pino over meyer and may really paid off
  21. One of the many reasons why Gardy was let go, no doubt.
  22. I think that type of coach would be great for Hicks, but would probably give it some time to reach his own conclusion.
