  1. And this just does not pass the smell test either. The guy has been too consistent across 14 years to say defense plays a role, especially the white sox. When have they ever been known as a good defensive team? I think teams generally don't get solid contact on him. He picks guys off and generally controls the run game very well. Those are the factors over 15 years. Too big of a sample size to give his stats to defense or something other than him.
  2. I would be happy with Luvollo over Molitor ( think my displeasure of the Maddon situation has been clear). But you do typically ensure the guy accepts the offer before you tell #2 he didn't get the job.
  3. I think he could help this team quite a bit. Nowhere near a six win improvement though (6 for him and 6 for a starter). Walk and K issues aside, he has been around 20 HR and 20 2B the last three years while missing time. And he has a total dWAR of 2 over the last three years in center. Which tells me he would be a drastic improvement in LF or RF.
  4. Some subsribe to the philosophy that the culture and acceptance level to mediocrity needs to change. That may help with the culture and attract others here. Like Joe Maddon, or maybe another free agent. I just think that no one player will add 25 wins, but using that logic will prevent from ever adding anyone. Especially in the context of Abreu, the guy has a 6 years deal.
  5. I guess we should not be shocked here. Second generation businesses fail at a very high rate.
  6. Mark B. and Nolasco bouncing back would help tremendously.
  7. FIP is usefull in short sequences. After three starts in MN, Hughes had an ERA over 7.00 and an FIP in the mid 3's. why? He was striking guys out at a good clip, not walking anyone, but in each outing he gave up almost all his hits in the same inning. That is an extreme example, FIP can be helpful over a year or two. But when you have 1,000's of innings of actual results and FIP and ERA are a mile away, then FIP is close to useless in my opinion. This is typically the result of a guy like Mark B. who outperforms his FIP year in and year out because the balls that are hit off him are weak (career 3.81 ERA and FIP of 4.10 ). Or a guy like Ricky Nolasco, who k's guys but gets drilled (career 4.48 ERA and FIP of 3.82).
  8. Yet another great reason why a phone call would have made sense. I have yet to see one that makes sense for NOT calling the guy. Luvullo had a second interview four days after Madden opted out. So the Twins already hired the guy theory does not work, unless they are doing a token interview with Luvollo, which is also unprofessional.
  9. I misunderstood you then, I apologize. I thought you were saying it is concerning that a perception exists among fans that the Twins would not pay for Maddon, therefore did not call.
  10. Cost "may" be a factor and he "probably" would be looking for another opportunity. It would seem simple to call the guy and ask him and confirm both. Especially if we were going to offer him $5M and therefore, cost would likely not be a huge factor.
  11. Here is the disconnect. You have suggested the Twins would pay Maddon $5M. That is a disagreement between you and I. Leviathan has suggested the concerning part is a "perception" that money played a role in not calling Maddon's agent. The disagreement between him and I is that the reality, not perception caused the Twins to not call his agent. I don't think anyone on these boards are dense. But you and others dismiss payroll comments as fringe. I apologize if these points are brought up too often for your liking, or that my points in your eyes aren't adding enough to the conversation. I would suggest hitting "ignore" button.
  12. I apologize, but I get a little irritated with the use of the word perception in the context of payroll. The article even said this match is unlikely and the first reason cited was payroll. Even if people think it is a control issue, the guy demanding $5M at least played a role. I think we have an established history here and should not hide from that. We won't call Max or Lesters agent either and that is entirely a money thing too. I just wish we could all admit it.
  13. I agree. I think the issue is money...but whether it be money or control, not kicking the tires on the best available guy for either reason is a huge red flag to me. To the broader point about opening up the books. That would be nice. When the government hands out tax incentives to businesses those incentives are tied to results. If you say we want tax incentives to build a new headquarter office because it will move 1,000 jobs to that city....the city will provide said benefits if you live up to your word. Year 1, you prove you have that many jobs making x amount of money and your benefit is x, same thing going out in some cases 20 years. The Twins clearly got a blank check.
  14. The best part of Charlie is he LOVES Cretin. I will never forget a note in his quick hits about ten years ago, during the non-football season. "So and So, assistant football coach at Cretin Derham Hall, underwent minor knee surgery Tuesday" Thanks Charlie.
  15. I went to delete that comment and it is locked.
  16. I am capable of deeper level of analysis, but a chance exists here that a drive for deeper anaylsis is causing some to identify reasons that don't seem plausable or are extremely unlikely. If we want the answer to be something else or make this site superior to the star tribune comments, we can throw all sorts of theories. The control theory does not make a ton of sense to me. Tampa Bay makes more decisions based on money than we do and he has not spoken out or been a thorn in the GM's side, so I would not expect that to start anytime soon. Maybe he wants to be GM, maybe he wants a blue unicorn, you know what would be the best way to find out? By calling him. My theory is that Tampa has done a remarkable job flipping guys year in and year out and fielding a very good young pitching staff. That has allowed Maddon to platoon a decent offense and win a bunch of games. They lost Shields last year. They won 77 games and now lose Price this year. Hellickson and Moore are a question mark health-wise and he doesn't think this is sustainable much longer. He is at peak value and wants to cash in. On the timing front, the world series will be over soon and free agency will start soon. So chance exists that he would rather take $5M from the Twins on a buy low move, rather than potentially sit out this year or be a broadcaster. Maybe those things don't interest him at all. Again, a phone call is the best way to figure it out and it costs nothing. Not asking around. Hearing it from the horses mouth.
  17. Well. We are on the market for a coach. He is the best coach out there. He likely opted out to be paid among the top coaches. So we know what that will cost. And we haven't called. Anyone that acts like another reason exists other than money for the lack of interest on our end is kidding them-self Satisfaction for me would be exploring all options to improve our team. I can understand not calling max sherzers agent. But not a 5m coach with no injury risk?
  18. If it is not the money and he is the best guy on the market, why doesn't the gm make a simple phone call? Even if he thinks something, what will it hurt to make a phone call? I agree terry knows roughly what he is looking for and it is so much more than we are going to pay that he hasn't called. You have still the door open for another reason. That is the basis for the disagreement.
  19. So we haven't called him because we think he may want something else? Seems an easy way exists to find out what he is thinking. Dial his number.
  20. We all know that nobody has a better resume than madden. We also know that our due diligence has not resulted in a phone call. Yet we are still pretending it may not be about money. What exactly could it be? We are purposefully avoiding the best guy because we don't like his glasses?
  21. Good point about getting Mark B. another year or a draft pick. That alone is worth a B level prospect at least.
  22. Jay, 1) We have not reached out to him and he has been available four days 2) He would be pleasantly surprised if we did reach out Is this enough proof that we do not have the budget, as a source and multiple people on this site have guessed? I mean how would we know how much he is demanding if we didn't reach out to him? Or do you think the Twins don't view him as the type of talent as Molitor or Luvollo? It was always about the money
  23. Career Numbers. Pavano 4.39 ERA Mark B. 3.81 ERA
  24. I don't get this logic either. He has not been a good pitcher since 2000 with remarkable consistency year in and year out by way of a great defense. Maybe, just mabye the balls hit off of him are weak pop ups and grounders because he is keeping hitters off balance? A career BABIP of .292 and HR rate of .99 is not a fluke over 3,000 innings.
  25. The Nolasco talk could seize any moment. No way they are unloading salary and taking back 3 years of salary of a guy nowhere near as good.
