  1. If Terry and Jim Pohlad knew before they fired Gardy that Molitor was going to be hired, do you think they would have hired him the same day? I seriously don't think they would have handed the job to an insider without flying guys in and interviewing them.
  2. I can only speak for myself, but I am guessing many others would also prefer Lester over Mark B. It is just not within the realm of reality that we are going to sign Lester, so Mark is just a more realistic target.
  3. This kind of sums up my stance as well. There are guys I would rather have than Mark B. But I am not sure any others make sense for where we are. Ervin is the only FA guy I can see that may be both talented enough and somewhat affordable on a 3-4 year deal. But my gut says someone is going to give the guy a ton of money. A lot of the guys that may be available on the trade market are not a fit, because they will require a top prospect and then you have to also pay them. If we were going to do that we may as well pay someone like Shields or Lester and keep our prospects
  4. I guess my counter to the cynicism comment is, lets just assume for a second that Terry Ryan knew the second Gardy was fired that he was going to hire Molitor. Do you think they would have fired Gardy and hired Molitor the same day, or within a few days? I think under no condition would the Pohlads or Dave St. Peter allowed that to happen. Not a chance. The optics of a franchise that has lost 360 games in four years that frankly did not take a step forward last year hiring a guy internally without a "process" would have looked really, really bad. So I think some credence exists to the cynicism. I mean, how long has Terry Ryan known Molitor? Two decades? He has been a roving instructor, at spring training, now he hired him for a bench role a year ago and he has seen him this year. Yet he still needed to interview him three times and it took him 31 days to decide? As far as where I stand, I would have been okay with Molitor or Luvollo. I can't really tell who will be a better coach. I do believe both are on different levels than Doug.
  5. I wonder why we didn't claim Andy Dirks (Blue Jays picked him up). League average defense in LF, his numbers in 2013 were good. Give up nothing to do so. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/dirksan01.shtml
  6. I have kind of thought LF was going to come down to Rosario vs. Hicks. Rosario is facing better competition and hitting .397, 2 2B, 9 SB (3 CS), and an OPS of .834. Hicks is hitting .214. Point Rosario.
  7. My theory is that a local reporter wanted to get his name out there nationally. You would assume the first tweet had some merit or actual journalism to it. Turns out it was a "gut feel"
  8. I am okay with that. A former center fielder HAS to be a plus defender in LF. And the guy has hit everywhere he has been.
  9. Maybe it is a sign that you want the guy, but at the end of the day you get to approve or decline any trade. Sounds like the letting people call you is just being lazy, or frankly in the case of the Maddon thing a cop out. If he was the best available guy and we had some small percentage chance to get him but he never called, it seems like we missed out.
  10. Here is a ranking of free agents. LF is very weak. They say Tomas has questionable defense and will get $100M. No thanks. Melky will get 3/40 and is a liability in LF. Rasmus 3/36 seems like the only real shot at upgrading both defensively and offensively, IMO. http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/mlb/49665/2/the-top-150-free-agents?pg=2
  11. I guess they say bad press is still good press.
  12. Absolutely. The new acqusition part is key and it can't be a typical rehab signing. Or one year tryout/audition for another team like Masterson.
  13. I am entertained by good baseball and a winning team. I don't think Doug is on par with the other two guys to provide that. on a side note, who is David A Dorsey?
  14. Yeah, so they are for sure signing a top free agent pitcher.
  15. Spot on. Certainly not being aggressive. We should have accepted from day 1 that he was at least on par with the three guys we were interviewing for the job. You can also set up an interview and conduct due diligence simultaneously.
  16. That is part of it too. I would not be shocked if part of the pitch to Maddon is that they intend to outbid everyone for Scherzer or Lester this off-season. The current rotation features Arrieta, Edwin Jackson, Wood, and Hammel. According to MLB, their top pitching prospect is #5 on their ranking and he had shoulder inflammation this year. The next pitcher is #8 and he had TJ in 2012.
  17. Yeah, 10-12 teams will call Lester and Max at 12:01 when free agency opens up. But we will wait for them to call us so we have negotiating leverage. Really drive their price down and pounce.
  18. Barring a really, really bad throw he is out by a mile. Probably stops and is caught in a hot box. I think he would have forever been known as the guy who blew a 25% shot at tying the game up.
  19. That 3B coach would have been a goat in KC forever.
  20. Rick, is that you? I apologize, I could not resist.
  21. I think a lot of what you say here is true. They brought it on themselves. But I can't let the Twins off the hook on the Maddon front, because I have a really, really hard time believing they thought he was not at least on par from a candidate perspective as Doug, Molitor, and Luvollo. It clearly was not about talent. I personally don't know if I buy the La Velle story about us reaching out. He is rarely, if ever accurate or has breaking news. It seems more likely that the Twins use him to leak things they want leaked. We do know that if we did reach out, it took us several days to do so. It was a long shot that Maddon would come here either way, but people have ego's and if our actions from day 1 were to pursue him aggressively then who knows. Maddon was apparently interested in a team that was closer to contention than we are. Well the Cubs have a very similar farm system than we do and they won exactly 3 more games this year than we did. Come to think of it, our system has more high end pitchers than theirs does. But a belief exists with Maddon that they will be more active on the free agent front and have the willingness to spend.
  22. That is my thing. The only guy on the FA market that I would rather have, that is realisticly a target of the Twins is Ervin Santana. But that depends on contract length and price. On the trade front, I think most guys that fit the talented and young profile are going to cost much, much more in terms of prospects. And if we are going to do a one year deal, I would rather have Mark B. over someone who has been up and down like Masterson or Morrow, because I feel like Mark B. has a better shot at being better next year. We just can't have another 5.00+ ERA guy.
  23. Maybe this is part of the reason? http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/2014/10/unbelievable_stat_about_minnesota_twins_sad_pitching_goes_viral.php
  24. I wonder if a pick off counts as LOB or not. He has 87 career picks offs, 3rd all time (Pettitte and Carlton).
