  1. We had 70 last year. The top two teams from a year ago regressed. Ervin has been a 2 or 3 war guy a year. One or two of our four or five regression candidate will regress. Mauer actually had a good second half. He should be better. And the odds tell me one of Meyer, may, or Sano is going to have a really good year. And we have guys nobody is expecting anything from this year like buxton, Rosario, and polanco. Vegas knows nothing. They are going bankrupt this year! I will say that odds makers need to just ensure 50 percent vote on each side. It probably says more about the average betters view of the twins than it does some quants who are always right.
  2. Obviously none of us are impartial, but it is hard for me to see how the Twins win fewer games than last year. Too many players could emerge with upside on this roster. Meyer, May, Sano, Buxton, Rosario, Ervin has been added to the rotation....the pen should get a nice shot in the arm. I think we have more stories of guys emerging plus bounce back candidates like Mauer than we do regression candidats like Hughes, Dozier, Plouffe, and Santana.
  3. Agreed. That was the point I was trying to get at here: "Most of these items are fact, not opinion and most people would categorize them as unprofessional. I don't see the wiggle room on the press conference, throwing balls at pitchers, on the field, etc. Others may say this is an edge we lack or whatever. That is a different argument. I stand by citing instance of unprofessionalism. And I say that even though he was my favorite player here for many years. It doesn't change multiple instances of him not living up to the reputation some are trying to sell"
  4. I think they were both unprofessional. But a 39 year old vet that is supposed to teach the 20 year olds how to act like a professional, especially since that was clearly one of the things that attracted us to Torii....should not have stooped down to his level. The Buxton's of the world could say, okay if I am asked a question that is out of line I can lose my cool and call the reporter a prick multiple times. The team loves guys that do that. Like Thrylos just posted, I am not trying to prove anything other than over his career, Torii has not always acted like the guy the media, the Twins, and some on here either remember him as or want him to be on this team. I think it is fair to call that out as a disconnect with this all. The irritating part regarding this thread, to me was the assertion that stating Torii has acted unproffesional at times was just so off base one didn't even know how to respond. I don't think some of these assertions are incorrect, let alone ridiculous.
  5. The fight is debateable, but do you think the press conference, throwing balls onto the field, and throwing balls at pitchers is professional? speculation?
  6. Agreed. Most of these items are fact, not opinion and most people would categorize them as unprofessional. I don't see the wiggle room on the press conference, throwing balls at pitchers, on the field, etc. Others may say this is an edge we lack or whatever. That is a different argument. I stand by citing instance of unprofessionalism. And I say that even though he was my favorite player here for many years. It doesn't change multiple instances of him not living up to the reputation some are trying to sell.
  7. I said he has acted unprofesssional. I called out throwing a baseball at a pitcher and his press conference here, where he repeatedly called a reporter a prick. Not menioned were reports that he and Pujols almost came to blows. When he was suspended for throwing balls onto the field of play, and when he was suspended for getting in an umps face and touching him.
  8. The ERA has been suspect, relative to his home road splits, FIP, xFIP, k rates, etc. I do think it speaks volumes that he was traded for a ham sandwich, then shelled this year. Now he findshimself, talent-wise about 7-8 deep in a rotation that was not at all good last year. Maybe they had negative connatations to it....just something to watch this year.
  9. No doubt Torii plays hard and that is admirable. I do have to say that I think Torii is here because we paid him the most money by several million dollars. A friend of a friend worked for the Twins during the Santana trade and stated to me that almost all of the names thrown into the Johan talks were not actually offered, including Lester, Hughes, and Ellsbury. The Twins FO actually thought that they were confident the Yankees never wanted Johan but were trying to drive up the price Boston would pay.
  10. Maybe they view calling out a young player as a positive. I personally think that Hunter was jealous that two young players came up and played better than he did and he was upset about it. The press conference is another story. The look on Terry's face is enough for me
  11. If Milone does go to Rochester it will be interesting to see if he demands a trade or compains as he did last year (complain, not sure if he demanded a trade).
  12. Yeah, that is fair. We really don't know on either side of the ledger.
  13. I guess I don't mind the Twns paying $2.8M for the depth. His track record suggests to me he is much closer to an MLB pitcher than the typical AAAA options we have seen lately. But the veteran status and $2.8M should not mean he gets the job over May or Meyer. I think they could make him the guy though...as you point out "the first"
  14. I am not going to comment on how Justin feels about Torii because I don't know. However we have seen glimpses where Torii has not kept his cool and been the veteran mentor the media and Twins think he is. The clubhouse fight is one example. He snapped and threw a ball at a pitcher. He totally unnecesarily comments about gay marriage, which is a distaction. And his actions at his introductory press conference, which was supposed to be a great time for the Twins to unveil their new mentor was at best childish. I think it is fair to call out those gaps and frankly, off base to assume we have any idea how his teammates view him. When the Fox North crew catch up with Hicks in the locker room and say "how great has it been to have Torii Hunter around?" you are likely going to get a positive answer. Not knowing either of them, the answer will be "it has been really great, I always looked up to Torii. He has been that veteran in the clubhouse and shows guys like me how to go about things on a daily basis. He has really helped me with x, y, and z".
  15. "Some wonder whether the huge foul territory at O.co Coliseum helped him out. Balls that are easily foul outs in Oakland might land 15 rows into the seating at Target Field giving the hitter another opportunity to get a hittable pitch." Home ERA/FIP Road ERA/FIP 2012 2.74/3.97 4.83/4.08 2013 3.44/4.96 4.19/3.80 2014 4.14/4.44 4.25/4.94 Overall much better numbers at home. Crazy gaps between ERA and FIP at home in 2012 and 2013. I think this theory has some merit
  16. This may appear overly negative, but it is exactly how I feel as well. I am not going to get excited and let down.
  17. To the point hit in a pitch has made, why spend $10M on the mentor? Especially when he has to hit 1/9th of the time and make up 1/3 of the OF near 40 years old on a team that is defensively challenged? The league is littered with former players that were once good and would love $300K a year to remain close to the game and work with young guys.
  18. If memory serves me, Gardy has laid into him for showing up to the ballpark and not knowing who the opposing pitcher is. He has been late a few times and Gardy has shown up. By and large I think Gardy and company were pretty fed up with his focus, communication to the team, and the way in which he prepares for games. Lavelle has said on a few occasions that the Twins patience with Hicks is close to running out.
  19. I think the team and role model aspect in baseball tends to get over-hyped. It is a very batter vs. pitcher sport, moreso than any other of the major sports. Regardless of the results, if I hear multiple coaches rave about Hicks being the first guy there and studying pitchers and getting outfield work, I will be more of a believer in the value Hunter has provided. If I don't hear these things and Hicks still looks lost in the batters box....then I think the mentor thing will be a hard sell. Until then, it is a great story, get ready for about one every three days!
  20. Sources indicate Hunter and Hicks were among the eight players playing poker for hours in the clubhouse. At one point Hunter said "nice hand" to Hicks.
  21. On a side note, day 1 and Hunter was seen talking to Hicks. Walking with Hicks. Grabbing bats together and Hunter (for the camera) making a joke. This story is going to become overdone very, very quickly.
  22. At a bare minimum, Hunter may get Hicks to relax. I think we tend to overblow these things, but that could not hurt
  23. I think you have seen the Tigers keep about the same payroll and it won't increase further. They have picked and choosed a bit lately, letting Max walk for example. They tried extended one of Max or Miggy. They probably don't do the Victor extension until they off-loaded Prince. And I don't see them handing out another $27M a year deal to Price. If that is an accurate assessment, they won't have payroll wiggle room to add and the money tied up will get older and older. The question about the heirs is a fair one. My understanding is the Illitch just wants a ring and is not in good health. I can admire that. He is losing about $30M a year but doesn't care because his other businesses are making money hand over first. Maybe the heirs don't have the same passion, who knows.
  24. Yeah, Texas did the analysis and concluded that while Prince was not going to age well, he would probably age much better in Texas summers, playing near 100 degrees each day.
  25. The only caveat here is they had the goods to land a 1.5 year rental of Price and two months of Sanchez. They would not have had the goods to land, say the current asking price of Cole Hamels. Max was not an ace when they traded for him, he looked like an overhyped guy with a 4.50 ERA. Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin were big time prospects at the time of that trade. Turner is another guy who people really liked. Their timing as noted by others has been phenomenal on virtually every one of these.
