  1. I'm not even going to pick up the bong. Kolek is not going to fall to us. Zero chance of it happening.
  2. I don't understand the reluctance of Twins management to stretch out Deduno. He is easily the best pitcher on this staff. If Nolasco, Pelfrey and Correia continue to stink it up, I would not be surprised if Pelfrey gets optioned to AAA and Correia DFA'd. Logan is getting a start. Are Meyer and May next? Those two would be the next logical options?
  3. Agreed. Everyone is jumping on the Gibson bandwagon but what i saw last year was a minor league pitcher that needs time in AAA. Not only did he not keep his fastball down but he had little control of his slider. Correia is no Greg Maddux but he certainly was a much better pitcher in 2013 than Gibson. 2014 is a big year for Kyle Gibson.
  4. Absolutely agree. I keep hearing the same thing, oh he could get injured, he will get injured, blah blah blah. Clearly outside of Tanaka he's the best free agent starter available and he's only 29/30. Ryan is crazy not to sign him to a 4 or 5 year deal similar to Nolasco. Correia is a free agent at seasons end. Pelfrey is not that good and under contract for two years. Hughes has potential but was brutal at Yankee Stadium. Matt Garza is the best option available at the right price. With Tanaka there's no way to know how he'll transition to the majors. I'd sign him if it was up to me.
  5. Strongly agree with this post. Garza is a far more valuable starter than Pelfrey, Correia and Hughes at this point. Plus he's only 30 years old. I can't understand Ryan's reluctance on this deal. Give him 4 years + a mutual option year at 15 million a season and see if he bites. If he still wants more than walk away with your head held high. If he agrees to sign you have a STRONG 1 2 punch in Nolasco & Garza and this allows you to move Correia to a team needing starters like the Orioles for an infielder or a PTBNL. If Pelfrey and Hughes also have good seasons they could be moved as well. On the flip side if both fall short of expectations Pelfrey is only under contract for 1 more season and Hughes could go back into the bullpen as a long reliever or closer. Signing Garza will not jeopardize the payroll nor block younger starters in AA/AAA from moving up. Best case scenario their are three ready in Gibson, Meyer and May. The latter two would like be late September callups at the earliest.
  6. Agreed. Signing Garza would give the Twins two reliable starters which they haven't had in years. At this point Nolasco is the ONLY stable piece followed by three big question marks (Hughes, Pelfrey and Correia) and the yet to be named #5 starter. With Garza we'd have insurance in case the other three fall flat on their faces and have down years without torpedoing the whole season. Fall back options include Deduno, Worley, Gibson, Albers, Johnson and Gilmartin. Meyer and May might also be available late next season as well. That said, if the Twins DO sign Garza I'll be mildly irritated with the Pelfrey signing. The odds of him being productive in 2014 are not good.
  7. From what i've read the Twins are receiving an addition $29M which they've invested in Nolasco (12M a year) and Hughes (8M a year). If they decide Garza is the guy they could spend 15M a year on him and be in very good financial position in the future. Remember too that Willingham and Correia are coming off the books at seasons end which saves the team 13M. It will also open up a slot in the rotation in 2015 for Meyer, May and Gibson. I'd tell Ryan to forget about Pelfrey.
  8. Interesting possibility and he's only 30 years old. However, I'm sure the Phillies will still want a TON for him and there biggest need is starting pitching . With Doc's retirement I'm sure they are thinking pitching all the way. It would probably take 3 of 4 in Meyer, May, Berrios AND Stewart to make something happen. If I was Ryan I'd run like hell from such a deal.
