    Perkins doesn't have a big contract. He has a modest contract for a relief pitcher. Papelbon makes $13M a year. Perkins is getting $4.6M next year and $6.5M after that. Even if he declines slightly he will be useful for years as a lefthanded specialist. I wouldn't be surprised to see Perkins pitching for a long time to come. Lefties with closing experience get nine lives. Guardado got by on a lot less stuff.

    I agree with the poster that mentioned the bullpen. The Twins bullpen may not look like the problem now but they're below average, aging and trending in the wrong direction. Overhauling the bullpen should be an offseason priority.

    Stewart pitched 87 innings in 19 games. Thorpe threw 71 innings in 16 games. Both averaged less than 5 innings per start. There are legion ball pitchers who throw more than that. Yet both pitchers ended the year hurt. I wonder if we will ever understand how to keep a pitcher healthy.

    In a park that suppresses HR like Target Field a good OF defense is a must. No more DH types in the outfield.

    I think MLB expands benefits with 60 days service time. If the Twins get him those benefits he can probably afford to go into coaching in the low minors.

    Bringing up Polanco edges him closer to Super 2. You never need worry about that with Bernier.

    I've been shocked before but I don't see Ervin Santana going from 2014 where nobody would give up a first round pick to get him to 2015 where he makes $100M on a 5 year deal.

    There is not much hope in this list of hopefuls. Old players who aren't stars in AAA.

    I think they can get Ervin Santana for $12M to $15M a season and I like him better than Shields.

    Plouffe will only "remain" at 3B for 3 more seasons, then he'll be gone. Sano doesn't have to stick past age 30, just fill the gap in the near term. By "blown away" I'm assuming you would agree that if Terry Ryan can find another starting pitching prospect with the pedigree of Alex Meyer that it would be a sufficient return for Plouffe.

    I am pretty much counting the Twins out in 2015. If they get to .500 that will be a huge improvement and that's still a long way from contention. Their next shot at contention is when Sano and Buxton are in the big leagues. Put it another way, I'm pretty sure trading Trevor Plouffe isn't going to be the only reason they don't win the division next season.

    It all comes down the the Twins evaluation of Sano. If they're confident he can play 3B adequately then they should shop Plouffe. If they aren't then Plouffe sticks around another year and Sano fights for playing time with Mauer, Vargas and Arcia. I think they'll have more suitors in the offseason than at next season's trade deadline. Trade deadline deals are typically for impending free agents. I don't think a utility role for Plouffe makes sense for reasons hinted at above. It is harder to learn 4 positions and play them well than to learn one position. Plouffe has shown he can handle 3B and be an adequate starter. Someone will value that higher than a utility guy at the corners. Turning Plouffe into a utility guy damages his value if it hurts his 3B defense. Unlike CF where the Twins had no acceptable backup plan when they dealt Revere and Span they do have decent stopgaps in Escobar and Nunez and an additional backup in Deibinson Romero.

    Except the third best 3B prospect in baseball - Miguel Sano - and stopgaps in Nunez and Escobar. Besides those three guys they're pretty bare I guess.

    "It might be more prudent for the the Twins to hold on to Plouffe until Sano forces his way to the majors." Plouffe's trade value can really only go down from here on out. He can get hurt, he can get more expensive through arbitration and he can provide fewer years of team control. I think it's time to move him like they moved Denard Span. Escobar and Nunez can cover 3B for the short term (frees up SS for Santana) with Sano nearly ready. Branch Rickey always said better a year too early than a year too late. Sano is not a lock but he's about as safe of a bet as you will ever see for a prospect. He has the pedigree and has had some success at AA. I hope the Twins are as tired of lousy defense in LF as I am. They need someone with speed who can catch the ball to help the pitching staff. That's not Miguel Sano.

    According to the SABR defensive ratings Mauer is an above average 1B. Vargas has not looked good at 1B and the scouting reports agree.

    Because it is a defensive downgrade at two positions. Mauer would be a minus at LF and Vargas a minus at 1B. Mauer is a plus at 1B and Vargas is best suited to DH.

    Kurt Suzuki in August .238/.294/.349/.643 The guy is too old to ride him this hard.

    If Sano does not come through the Twins are not going to be a contender. He's also very low risk of being a failure. Are they building a contender or a .500 ballclub? Plouffe may be at least league average but he's also at best league average. Better a year too early than a year too late.

    The infielder to "sell high" on is Trevor Plouffe. He has 3 arbitration years remaining and is coming off his best year as a defender. I think he's reached his peak and projects as an average 3B for the remainder of his arbitration years. Average performance has value and Plouffe should be of interest to about half the teams in the league. The Twins can patch together 3B with Escobar and Nunez until Miguel Sano is ready and give SS to Danny Santana.
