    My guess is Quentin's agent is making calls and trying to find someone who will pay the Twins a little cash for his contract. All it takes is one injury and it doesn't necessarily have to be a Twins injury.

    But the starters include Rosario who can play all 3 outfield positions. I agree that it isn't likely but it is a configuration they may try at some point this season.

    The bullpen has Fien, Abad/O'Rourke, Tonkin and Pressly as givens if Ricky Nolasco (shudder) makes the rotation. Trevor May is being forced into service in the bullpen due to the lack of depth.Tell me which talented guys would be blocked if they had signed ONE good reliever to a two or three year deal? This bullpen is Perkins, Jepsen, May (unfortunately) and 4-5 warm bodies. The good news is it should be REALLY EASY for Nick Burdi to get a callup this season.

    Buxton is already clearly a better player than Danny Santana. He's the starting CF. The Twins really want Duffey to win that spot but the reports are not good. Makes me wish they had given Trevor May another week.

    I agree that the only spot left to decide appears to be the 12th pitcher in the bullpen. That will probably be a lefty and Tonkin will probably make it through waivers to open up the roster slot.

    When did I become the person evaluating Trevor May? The Twins evaluate their players. They wanted to move him now to become a short reliever. Apparently that means a different workout routine, otherwise I agree there is no reason to make the decision now. Milone or Nolasco will be the long reliever. Long relievers don't warm up on short notice and enter games in the middle of an inning and they don't pitch back to back days. They're treated a lot more like a starting pitcher. I am glad they decided not to make May the long reliever as that would be the biggest waste of his innings. If May had been performing better (had been winning the competition) they probably wouldn't have made the move now.

    They could have, but if May lost the competition in 2 weeks he would be headed to AAA to start rather than going to the bullpen. I could live with telling Nolasco right now he's headed to the bullpen. I think that may be the only way to salvage some value from Ricky Nolasco.

    I'm not convinced Nolasco has won anything yet but May was bouncing changeups. The coaches are pleased with Duffey so far and he's pretty much got the #4 slot locked up. It is down to Milone v Nolasco for the 5th starter with the loser becoming the long reliever. We all know Berrios is going to start the season in AAA unless two pitchers get hurt in the next two weeks.

    May hasn't been good this spring. He lost the competition to make the rotation. It was either AAA or the bullpen.

    I think the Twins know Sano is going to be a bad outfielder. I think they also thought he would be a lousy third baseman too. Being a bad RF will always cost fewer runs than being a bad 3B.

    I expect Polanco to be the first guy called up if an infielder is injured. With Santana and Arcia both likely to make the roster, Polanco might be the first position player called up regardless.

    Split your fingers apart and hold a ball. You can feel the tension all the way up your arm to the elbow. Roger Craig created and ruined a whole crop of prospects with the splitter in the 1980s.

    3B is a shorter throw than SS in the hole.

    I thought Polanco got a 4th option for signing as a 16 year old just like Kepler.

    I think Escobar is considered a better fielder than Polanco, which is why he goes into spring training as the starting shortstop. I agree that Escobar is a useful player to have on your team.

    Responding to several posts at once: Mike Tonkin's situation shouldn't prevent any team from signing a top relief pitcher. Their top relief pitchers this season could be May and Duffey which should surprise nobody. Chargois is on the 40 man roster which puts him ahead of Burdi for opening day.

    On the contrary, I think the Twins could use a player who can play multiple positions and contribute at all of them. Placido Polanco is a good example of this, as are Ben Zobrist and Mark Loretta. With benches as short as they are having a player with defensive versatility who can switch hit is a plus. If the Twins trade Plouffe and put Sano at 3B this will become even more important.

    I think Nolasco is on a very short leash and likely headed to the bullpen as the long reliever

    I think Nunez is naturally a third baseman, just like Trevor Plouffe. Neither player has the range needed for SS or 2B. The Twins don't really have a backup infielder they would use to replace any of the infield starters on defense. The starters are generally average to above average defenders and the backups are below average defenders. The only positions you might see a substitution for defense are RF (Sano), C (Suzuki) or 1B (Mauer).

    That's unfortunate if true. If Polanco can't field as well as Nunez they should probably cut him. Nunez is below average at all three infield positions and trending downward. Santana is bad enough at SS that they want him to play outfield.

    I like the idea of developing Jorge Polanco as the utility infielder. I'd like to see him on the team as I think he's a better ballplayer than Santana or Nunez but I don't think he beats out Escobar, Dozier or Plouffe.

    There are several broadcasters of Herb Carneal's generation I enjoyed. Ernie Harwell was great. Jack Buck was entertaining. Mel Allen and Red Barber were tops. Provus works well with Gladden. He learned well working with Uecker all those years in Milwaukee. Much bettter than Gordon with Gladden. I hope Rodney spends some time in the booth this summer. I like when he works TV broadcasts with Bert.

    Not much demand for third basemen this offseason. David Freese is still looking for work.
