  1. Love all the good commentary. Reads just like the game threads. And just like the game threads, I still don't know the score.
  2. Not terribly concerned about Mr. Ryan's curiosity or lack thereof. It's just a divorce, of sorts -- when the ballplayer and club stop hearing each other, well, it's time to change the locks. Sometimes the player gets the better of the deal. Sometimes his old club does. Sometimes both are better for it.
  3. This. I like Maddon, too, because his success came in the East. If we played half our games in that division the past 13 years, we would have struggled, to say the least.
  4. Everyone here speaks French, so it's not goodbye, just awe revere, mi amigos.
  5. Good grief. That's how my dad played gin, too. We have the same dad! "Luke, I'm your father!"
  6. I do believe this is the first time in four years that Mauer has been in the lineup in game 162. Does a heart good to see that.
  7. Between church and taking out my wife's mom to supper, I'll miss the festivities tonight. But I leave you with one disturbing thought: Has anyone, anywhere seen Rajai Davis and Tracy Chapman in the same room?
  8. The morning after commentary is always a fun read.
  9. That one gal in the oboe section?
  10. Dang, this team could be so close. With any consistent good pitching, we flip one loss to a W once every 10 games and we're in the playoffs and the toast of baseball. And yes, I picked the wrong week to give up sniffing glue. But I have a sense about this team going forward. That is all.
  11. Y'mean, no "Living in an Amish Paradise" for you?
  12. Let me guess... You dated them religiously?
  13. Messrs. Smith and Hocking (and I assume others) don't seem to have a high opinion of Derek F-ing Jeter. (I wonder if his mom or dad picked his middle name. Never mind.) Don't know why, but I've always like him. Yanks were my first team as a kid. Like Rivera, Jeter's handled the idolatry pretty well the past few weeks. Hey! How about that Swarzie?
  14. Seeing the nice crowd at Comerica got me thinking... A lot of TD people were athletes or other types of performers -- music, primarily. What was the biggest group of people who ever saw you in the field of play or on stage? Me, maybe a couple hundred. I'm like Spinal Tap. My public is very discriminating.
  15. Is JB still hurting? Hope she heals soon. Miss her unaccented Iowa typing.
  16. My highlight was Bark's Rally Rhino and Rabbit. Inspirational.
  17. On a lighter note, is Gardy still growing the full beard? I hear he won't shave until his team is eliminated from the playoffs.
  18. Sorry to be late or nonexistent in recent games. Travel (taking care of mom in Nebraska), death (one in 70s, another 8 years old, both cancer, and my favorite coach from college, too), and the end of a career (Jeter hit an RBI double in the 1st). At the end of the each baseball season, the melancholy gets harder to shake. Most of the time I always knew there'd be another year, something to hope for. Now I hear footsteps. Time's catching up. Gonna have a Grain Belt. Make it all better.
  19. So tell us, Mr. Smith, are we at war with Eastasia or Eurasia? (Page 3, here we come!)
  20. Yes. Concur. Roger that. Have fun! Something tells me it's all happening at the zoo.
  21. Good thing, too. The first game of the series, I had two children that I know of in the 1st inning and by the 6th, I had three.
  22. Three things... 1. I was singing a Milli Vanilli song in the shower this morning. Wife said I sounded as good as the original. "How do you know that?" I asked. 2. Yes, it's the end of another hard year. But damn it, kids, it's been a lot darker for the Boys from the Twin Cities. On this date in 2000, as talk swirled of folding our tent through contraction, the last-place Twins defeated the first-place White Sox at the Dome 6-5 in 10 innings. Down 5-0 in the 7th, we came back with 4 runs in our half as A.J. Pierzynski clubbed a 3-run shot. In the bottom of the 8th, Denny Hocking -- yes, the heir to Cesar Tovar and Nick Punto's daddy -- tied it up with a sharp single to center, scoring Torii Hunter who'd tagged a triple to lead off. We won in the 10th on Matt Lawton's 2-out, full count homer. It was our 67th win. And we went on to play winning baseball the rest of the decade. Well played, Mr. Hocking. Better days are coming. 3. I don't remember the third thing. That is all.
  23. Back in the 1940s, Midway Airport used to let my dad and his friends shoot critters with their .22 rifles around the perimeter of the field so planes wouldn't have to deal with roadkill. He grew up near 61st and Kennard. Such a different world then.
  24. Just tuned in and see that Mauer's out with a "contusion to the left elbow." That's a relief. Thought it might be a bad bruise. Anyway, what happened? Is anyone following the game?
