  1. I don't even remember Shave or Gates.
  2. I checked. 5 plus .250 hitters. Nobody over .300. Uglier than I remember: Vs David Wells: Player PA AVG OBP SLG Matt Lawton, CF 162 .244 .370 .444 Brent Gates, 2B 72 .129 .236 .194 Paul Molitor, DH 175 .255 .320 .325 Marty Cordova, LF .256 .350 .337 Ron Coomer, 1B 160 .269 .287 .455 Alex Ochoa, RF 84 .253 .298 .405 Jon Shave, 3B 11 .182 .182 .182 Javier Valentin, C .234 .260 .404 Pat Meares, SS 149 .296 .338 .444
  3. I saw that game, but I think at least half of our lineup was above .250 and I seem to think we had at least one .300 hitter in the lineup.
  4. Yeah, I did. I thought it last night, too, but tonight is even worse.
  5. I've been a Twins fan for 30 years now and this is the worst lineup I can remember.
  6. I hope not. Perk is performing way better than he is being paid and is a positive figure in the clubhouse and community. I think we can compete next year if we get ace on the starting staff (we have the money) and if a few guys, like Diamond, get it together. Deduno looks great. Only reason to trade Perk is if we don't believe we can compete next year.
  7. I'd rather see Redmond come out of retirement. It was a mistake to trade him if for reasons none other than the psyche of the clubhouse. Plus, he should be our next manager anyway.
  8. Rhett speculated that Arcia being pulled was related to Mauer heading back to MN to be with his wife. Later, there were reports that it may have been dizziness. However, it is now being reported that it wasn't injury related and the scuttlebutt is that he was pulled for not running out a play. And, in response to an earlier post, YES, bring back Thome! He doesn't hit worse than Willingham. Though we don't exactly need to be more left-handed than we already are, we don't have anybody providing reliable power from the left side. He also wouldn't ruin our speed game because we don't have one.
  9. He has been playing well in RF. I remember only one ball that he has misplayed (could have been caught, freaked out by limestone overhang). Parmalee has made a number of great plays out there, but has also thrown to the wrong base a number of times. Doumit has a few important put-outs and seems to rival CP's defense out there when all is considered. As a catcher, it would be very difficult to charge him with lackluster strike zone management given the egregious problems of our starting pitching staff over the past two years. If that is taken into account, are we to conclude that Mauer is a horrible catcher, too?
  10. Why do you think Doumit should be traded? A switch-hitter capable of playing catcher, RF, and DH that can drive in runs and isn't too expensive seems to be a good compliment to Mauer. Plus, we have him through end 2014. I'd like to see him stay.
  11. What's wrong with Diamond? Good question. Perhaps it is his Canadian-ness. Same problem plaguing Morneau? All three Minnesota boys are doing great. OK, OK, I'm just kidding. I stopped making fun of Canadians years ago after their dollar became stronger than ours -- just had a little relapse.
  12. Not to beat a dead horse here, because it really doesn't matter, but the reasons that Hicks was still 8-10 feet from the plate (or 20) have everything to do with the original post, whose point was that Vavra made the mistake. I agree completely that Hicks got a bad jump, and that's something Vavra could have (or did) take into consideration. But, Hicks made three mistakes AFTER passing Vavra that may have made all the difference in the world despite his slow jump. In my opinion, that exonerates Vavra from blame. Incidentally, is his slow jump related to his lack of base-stealing prowess? I think so. However, he seems to get good jumps on defense *most* of the time.
  13. I saw the game on TV, too. I would say the catcher was only sorta blocking the plate. It looks to me like an alley to the inner half of the plate was open. Hicks decelerated greatly in the last few steps. He was probably trying to decide whether to slide or take out the catcher and hesitated so long that he did neither. But, from the video replay, it is clear that the on deck batter is telling Hicks to slide in plenty of time for him to do so. Plus, Hicks makes two mistakes after he passes Vavra, who was well down the line. You can see from the replay that Hicks briefly turns to look to see where the ball was, presumably looking to see if the play was coming or if it was going to be cut off, but either way, he should've been expecting to slide from the crack of the bat and been looking to pick up the on deck batter for further instructions. After he looks back, he then cowers a bit as if he thinks he's going to be hit by the throw. This is when he starts to slow down. When the catcher controls the ball, he and the glove are high, leaving a nice little path for a low slide.
  14. I disagree. Hicks had a good chance to be safe and from my view probably would have been with a decent slide. The catcher's arm was in motion upward from having to scoop the ball. Also, those sabermetric values don't describe how the Twins perform with runners at first and third. We hit a lot of ground balls. I guess the biggest point I want to make is that we have not been hitting well and that we generally lack aggressiveness. Although it did not work out well for us in this situation because of what I would call poor base running, we still put a runner on second. Challenge the other team to make plays and be aggressive. I support Vavra's decision to send him. I am aghast that Hicks came into the plate like that. That shouldn't even happen in a high school game, much less a major league one. Sit his butt on the bench for playing like that.
  15. Good post, but don't scare me with the Mijares talk. The lack of his presence on the team has been my only silver lining for the last two years. I think you meant it sarcastically, but it WAS a good job by Terry Ryan to get rid of him, in my opinion. I wish Delmon would've charged our own dugout. That would have been something to behold!
  16. I, for one, am so sick of all the sensationalism that has gripped this country as well as the media's gleeful exploitation of it -- sports is just as guilty as politics (who ever thought I would loathe ESPN). Tom Kelly in the booth is a breath of fresh air. He delivers relevant and insightful observations in a matter-of-fact manner. For as much as organizations do these days to keep the interest of non-baseball fans, I am glad that there is something that hearkens back to an earlier day when fans really knew the game. That being said, it would be hard to imagine TK in the booth for 150 games per year. Living in NC, I rely on the MLB app to watch the games, and prior to a few years ago, you could not choose your broadcast. I got to listen to a lot of commentators from opposing teams, and Dick and Bert were WAY better than just about all of them for knowledge of the game and were among the least annoying.
  17. Agreed. He has mentioned it after his last several starts, so it's definitely in his head. He needs to get his location back in AAA and come back ready to perform. It has to be difficult for management to deal with the inconsistent play from one year to the next, especially of the pitchers. Baker, Liriano, and Blackburn come to mind, but there are many more.
