  1. I have no doubt Sano will stick at 3B, he is already better defensively than Plouffe even though that is not saying much. I wouldnt go near any kind of 4/40 type deals for Morales or Drew. Both are solid players but the draft pick is really hurting their market value. I know Ryan disdains giving up prospects but if they could swoop in & land the pair on 3/25 deals giving up a 2nd & a 3rd I could see Ryan reluctantly pulling the trigger.
  2. I would think he won't be looking for a 6-7 year deal, you want to hit the FA market again before you reach 30 optimally. So I dont think one of those lifetime contracts will be necesary to land him. The tax situation is definitely something that needs to be thought about. Going to Texas or Florida with no state taxes you will need to outbid those teams to make an equal offer. With a future OF consisting of Buxton/Hicks and Sano on the brink in a pitcher friendly park MN is a desirable long term option. I still think it would take a 4 year 20-22 mill a year deal to land him in MN. Texas, LAD, & NYY are the 3 places I expect to be the real contenders for his services with Cubs & Red Sox as sleepers. Seattle & the Angels are already too stretched payroll wise to be suitable IMO. I would love to land him but Im not sure it makes sense for the Twins. I'd still prefer to jump in on Garza for 4 years at 15 per while teams are bidding on Tanaka.
  3. Unfortunately you aren't getting Hardy for a 28 year old AAA RP. It would probably take May to get him.
  4. He threw the same straight 88-90 mph fastball over & over and got crushed. I don't have much hope for him & think he will be dfa'd after ST.
  5. I like the moves to stabilize the team & want to keep payroll available for next year after seeing what holes left don't fill themselves. It sounds like the Drew & Morales markets may not be what they hoped with so much concentrated on pitching. Say the market for them really is down. If you could sign both for 3/25 deals giving up a 2nd & 3rd in the draft, wouldja?
  6. He did just turn 26 a month ago & is a converted OF. Only 281 games of the last 4 seasons in the minors he was catching. I would prefer he was at AAA catching everyday for 1 more season rather than sitting on the bench & only catching 50 games in the majors.
  7. Given the options available on the offensive side I would be content also. Im not saying they shouldnt make any more improvements. I would go 4/60 on Garza and trade Corriea but I don't like any of the remaining bats available at positions of need for the price.
  8. Honestly the DH options this year & next are very very blah. Morales will cost a pick as would Butler next year. They both will get ore than I would like to spend on a full time DH. Kubel/Hammer platoon at DH if Kubel can find find some return to form vs RHP even going into 2015. 7-8 Mill combined would likely get them back on 1 year deals. Parmelee/Plouffe DH platoon wouldnt be the end of the world for 1 year. Niether of those options excites me at all but that would keep the seat warm for Vargas or Walker to come in as the DH come 2016.
  9. I disagree a bit, having Hammer be a DH 3/4 of the time while spending some time out in LF as a 4th OF to rest the other guys once a week keeps his legs fresh & hopefully able to stay healthy. Teams know his defensive short comings & ability in LF. As long as he is healthy enough to play it once a week it will not hurt his trade value. Staying healthy will improve it more than playing spotty LF full time.
  10. The other positive in signing Suzuki is this allows Hermann to spend another year at AAA to hone his catching skills. I'd like to see him get full time work there, I think he could be a real quality backup to Pinto but he needs more time catching. Quality signing albeit a bit more than I thought he would get.
  11. With all the attention pitch framing is getting, its only a matter of time before umpires know of the good catchers who are sneaking balls by them as strikes. Umpires are judged job perfomance wise on their strike/ball calling using pitch/fx. Also pitch framing ability is only a few years away from being an obsolete talent, with the way technology is moving it will be tracked/called electronically before we know it.
  12. His incentives are not exactly difficult to reach. 2 mill base salary just for making the team. 150K for reaching 300 PA & again for 350 PA, then 200K for 400 PA. Even if Hammer returns healthy he will miss time here & there. Hard to see him not getting to 300 PA atleast.
  13. His salary/roster spot is a wash with Kubel's 3 mill 1 year deal
  14. Hahaha well Alex Wood would have looked very good as the #5 in the rotation.
  15. While they are moving 3.5 mill off the books, Kubel is essentially signed to a 1 year 3 mill deal so he's just replacing Doumit. The team is basically trading Doumit for Kubel & Gilmartin. I'll take that deal anyday.
  16. While Gilmarten isn't the hot prospect he once was this is a freaking great return for Doumit. Ibarra for Butera now Gilmarten for Doumit. TR's track record in nabbing prospects for mediocre vets is top notch.
  17. Colabello, Fryer won't be until/less a catchers signed. Worley will be after ST. I think Albers has a chance to be a real good lefty in the pen.
  18. I do like your thought process on next year & Bailey. However I think the market will dictate providing a better option to the player than what Lackey accepted. Unless Tanaka isnt posted until next year. The Yankees, who's luxury tax will reset & ARoid will be off the books will throw all kinds of money at Bailey. Next years SP FA is pretty thin. Kershaw - Isnt going anywhere Sherzer - Hard to believe the Fielder trade wasnt a precursor to re signing him Bailey - Reds want him back but may not have the $ without moving Phillips Iwakuma - 34 & a likely resign with M's Lester - probably available Peavy - 34 & not as good as Garza Shields - With what they gave up, they have to sign him Masterson - Garza 2.0 but will cost a pick So basically its going to be Bailey, Masterson, Lester, & Shields who all will require picks & Peavy as the top SP FA options. With a Sabathia, Tanaka, Pineda, Nova rotation the Yanks will be all over Bailey if he hits the market being the clear #1 SP available. That's why I like getting Garza now on a 4 year deal. I think he would even opt out if he didnt vest his 5th year which would almost be a bonus to the Twins. Garza fior 3/30 would bridge the yougsters perfectly plus he wont cost a pick.
  19. I like him a lot better than Buck. He's ok with the bat & defensively for a C. Which isnt common for catchers, seems like they are usually more all defense or all offense. Given Pinto latest shoulder woes, I do like having another option besides Fryer/Hermann. While they have said Doumit can catch. I expect that to be on an emergency injury basis only. I honestly dont think he will catch another game in his career. Bartlett, Kubel, Suzuki... These are all quality end of the bench take a chance on possibly getting good reward type players.
  20. Im not real bothered by this as I don't think he can stick as a starter. However they had plenty of options to make room on the 40 man to let him try working out of the bullpen. You see starters all the time who couldn't cut it. Then they move to the bullpen, gain a few extra MPH and suddenly they are Glen Perkins 2.0 mowing people down or even Swarzak to a lesser degree.
  21. Kubel is only 1 year out from hitting .327/.506/.833 with 30 hrs, its not like he has been crap since he left the Twins. He had a very similar year to Willingham last season. Never got into a consistent groove from continual nagging injuries. I view this as Willingham insurance while making Doumit & $3M his contract expendable.
  22. Unless its just leverage in talks with Arroyo & Garza I have no idea what the interest in Pelfrey is. Deduno deserves a spot in the rotation, if you honestly believe Diamond & Worley are deserving & could be a #5 like TR has said. Pelfrey has no place on this roster. Garza's injury history is better than Pelfreys, I can see not wanting to go 5 years on him or any pitcher. Nolasco's deal is basically a 4 year too with the 5th year being almost difficult to reach. He clearly wants the security of 4-5 years. Why not toss this out to his camp. 4 year $60 million with a 5th year 15million option that vests with 350+ IP in the first 2 years combined. While also giving Garza an opt out option after year 2 where he can't be offered arbitration for giving in on the vesting option. If he reaches that vesting option, your really only risking a 3/45 on a 33 year old SP who's proven healthy 2 straight years.
  23. The Mets like him but seem convinced they will need to overpay by quite a bit to get him to leave Boston. Thats a little suprising to hear but if true the Twins would surely be in the same boat & that's surely not TR's MO.
  24. CooomDog! Happy for him but I would have liked to see him in the booth full time. He has a good vibe and breaks things down nicely while being PC without sounding completely homerish. Not an easy medium to find. Bert's alright but would much rather hear Coomer in the booth.
