  1. That photo - is that Gonsalves? Reminds me that these young men are YOUNG. Wow. We should sometimes cut these guys a bit of slack when they don't behave like 70 year old sages. . .
  2. After there were 2 outs in the fourth inning, and Nolasco had thrown over 80 pitches - I texted Old Goat and said that Molitor would be my hero if he brought the entire bullpen into the dugout, and made Nolasco pitch the entire game. All 183 pitches or whatever it would take. The game wouldn't have ended til about 10 p.m. though. He is miserable to watch. As is Pelfrey. They bring a game to a glacial pace.
  3. John, this article, and the previous comments, make me grateful to be a part of the Twins Daily community. thanks to everyone who shares their love of baseball and the Twins here on this site. John, Enjoy the Florida sunshine. The Wyoming winters haven't been as tough as Minnesota lately, but Florida still sounds prettty dang nice right now!
  4. I would be fine with Johan pitching for the Twins. And, heck, its not my money - pay whatever it takes. It would be for just this one year.
  5. Coaches matter. A good bit. But what really matters, is the talent. Much more important than the pitching coaches "philosophy" is his pitchers. Also - isn't the seven coaches thing really about how many can suit up and be on the field / in the dugout and bullpen? (I don't know that, but I kinda sorta thought that 7 is the number of coaches who can suit up for a game)... And I think bullpen management is dang important. Meaning, how often does a coach have guys warm up and then not use them? Or warm them up too often in a game. . . and etc. Stuff that is hard to know if you aren't paying way close attention...
  6. re: DH - Old Goat has a great point. If Baseball started with the DH, and someone said "I have a great idea, let's have the pitcher hit." No one in their right mind would agree to it. At the same time, I remember being at a game in the late 80s or early 90s and Clemons was cruising through the Twins, and I thought it would have been nice to see if batting a couple times would have helped tire him out a bit. It wouldn't have, but still. I don't mind the different rules in different leagues. Until I have to watch civilians bat...
  7. Thanks Seth! Baseball has some great people, and "The Mayor" seems to be among the best. I really liked the story of his teammates cheering when Tommy got his call up - that says a lot. That was a great read, Seth, one of the gifts of TD is reading about the many aspects of a team.
  8. I am a Morneau fan. I won't barbecue you, but I will suggest that people mature, and one might not be out of line in suggesting that a corresponding maturity might be called for in giving someone a break.
  9. Good discussion. I read the moderator post/warning the other day, and was deeply grateful for it.
  10. MWW - that's quite an interesting thought. It has me thinking. Thanks. Who remembers Frank Viola's beginning in MLB? He learned on the fly. If I remember correctly, he had games where he would be looking into the dugout, wanting to be pulled, and they'd leave him in to - I think - sort of teach him to toughen up. A manager would get ripped pretty good for that now, and maybe deserved to be then. . .
  11. 99 pitches, 4 walks, 2 runs, in 6 innings in AAA doesn't scream out to me - "put me in coach." At the same time - the 10 strikeouts are sure fun. . .
  12. I've never understood how a salary cap would help baseball. It seems that NFL teams either use it as an excuse to not sign guys or give them what they're worth, or the teams that really want to win work around the cap. I wouldn't trust baseball owners with a cap. Most of them would be the excuse makers. Not to mention - with teams worth over a billion dollars, they seem to have enough money to pay these guys. I don't care what a guys making. I'm interested in seeing their amazing play.
  13. Ditto the other comments here. Mulhouse and Shane and all... I like this line: "Remember, the detour is the journey." AJP thanks for sharing your journey with us. I join the TD community in gratitude, and in wishing you the best in whatever comes next!
  14. No bombs. Gonna have to change the nickname.
  15. I think I would take that ratio two out of three days.
  16. I've always wondered at the speculation that Shoeless Joe was somehow simple. I have a suspicion that being a good hitter is very much an intellectual thing, and so that has never rung true to me... As Yogi Berra said: "Ninety percent of this game is half mental" One wonders how Shoeless Joe was singled out, but others, got away with all sorts of nonsense. (I'm thinking of Bill James' description of Hal Chase in The Historical Baseball Abstract) Kind of like how Giambi has a good name, but other guys - not so much.
  17. Thanks John! Have a great time in FLA!
  18. When all is said and done, considering that Sano saw the leading doctor in the field, and followed his advice... if you are going to criticize the Twinkies on this one, you should probably look into your own dark heart, and wonder about regaining perspective.
  19. As soon as I read this, I figured there would be folks on TD criticizing the Twins handling of Sano's health care. A bit predictable. I hope Mr. Sano is ok with rest, and if he has surgery, all goes well, and he can get back on track ASAP.
  20. Pretty hard to say its anything but dang exciting when reading about these players. Sure hope these guys have great success, and also have great fun together. It should be fun to follow.
  21. It is facts like the unseemly White Sox trip though Saint Paul that cause me to wonder. When people say they like the History Channel. Do they really watch it? Or are they more able to ignore things that horrify them than Oldgoat is?
