  1. Gibson still looks like he needs to marinate some and like you said, others are out of options. Every year you have starters get injured or end up being a trainwreck so I'm sure Gibson will have the opportunity to pitch quite a bit in the majors next year if he does well at AAA.
  2. I'm guessing they don't sign anyone else for the rotation so I think that you may be right about the last two spots in the rotation. However, if Deduno looks good in ST this year he has to be a lock.
  3. So, are they better? #1 Nolasco #2-Correia #3-Deduno #4-Hughes #5-Pelfrey (if they resign him) (or maybe Diamond, Albers...ect) If Dedunoand Correia continue what they did in 2013 and Nolasco transitions from the NL to AL well this could be a respectable rotation. Not that I think the rotation will be playoff potential but at least I see major league competent starters for 2014.
  4. Well, by looking at things from last year: Saunders and Pelfrey turned out to be about the same, Marcum was performance wise similar up until the predictible injury. Pelfrey was $4m, Correia $4.5. Saunders $6.5m , Marcum $4m I think Ryan did quite well picking which player/contracts were the better deal. Saved $2m and got the better overall players.
  5. I think Target Field will make his life easier that is for sure. The TF is more pitcher friendly and he comes to MN where there is almost zero pressure in comparison to NY. We all know how much the mental part of pitching affects a pitcher. Even if the change of stadium and having less pressure help, I'm not sure it makes him better than a #4 starter. His ERA since becoming a fulltime starter is something like 4.85 with a WHIP of 1.37 or so. If he can get to around a 4.5 era or less I think that will be better than I expect, if we get 4.85 out him then we have a decent 5th starter.
  6. Not sure what to think abouyt Phil Hughes. At his best he's a solid #3 starter but from what we see most of the time he's a good 5th starter or maybe a 4th. Might be a good rotation depth move and perhaps he can do well in a park like Target Field.
  7. I admit I was wrong on Correia, he was better than I expected he would be and turned out to be a pretty good pickup for the price. I was right about Marcum though, lots of people here were miffed about the Twins passing and getting Pelfrey/Correia instead. Turns out Ryan was right on both accounts.
  8. Should have been done a while ago really. I hope Albers works out but his whip in AAA this year might indicate that it's not going to go as well in the majors. Arcia is deserving of the call up and should be on the roster anyway. Edit: quick math in head didn't pan out, Alber's whip looks good.
  9. Many of us thought Diamond would regress a bit this year but so far he has still been a big disappointment. Same could be said of everyone in the roation minus Correia.
  10. No, not really. I was just trying to point out that Hicks got the CF spot basically by default and Thomas was called up and doing pretty well so he's probably keeping that spot for a while. They probably won't be rushing Hicks back given what Clete has been doing. They'll give Hicks plenty of time to get some ABs in and get to 100% before he comes back up. However, had Thomas been a total disaster they'd have to rush Hicks back a little quicker even if he's not been all that impressive to this point. Parm isn't getting the same chance because there are other corner OFs who are better on the roster. Hicks started pretty well everyday because there's not much depth at that spot on the roster. What I meant about Plouffe is he had issues getting ABs at times last year which is where Parmelee is this year. Also, Plouffe is in front of Carroll and Escobar so not exactly great competition for the spot but at least Plouffe seems competent for the most part. Agreed. That's the whole problem though, I think they are trying to be a rebuilding winning team.
  11. Well, they seem to be trying to do a little of both winning and rebuilding. Basically it looks like prospects are being brought up and given a chance to play (Arcia, Hicks, Thomas and now Gibson) the ones that succeed get playing time (Arica, Thomas and Hicks by default) the young players that have ahd a chance and not been successful get less (Parmelee & Plouffe). It seems like in their hybrid approach young players get a chance to play and if they don't produce they get a reduced role. In a true rebuild all these guys would be playing a lot.
  12. Exactly. I think from Gardy's point of view he's paid to put the best team out there and he thinks that starting Parmelee in most cases isn't putting out the best lineup he can. So, unless there is a directive from Terry Ryan or they trade someone Gardy is just going to keep putting out the best lineup.
  13. I agree it is a development year but I think the Twins think differently or they'd be playing Parmelee a lot more.
  14. Yes, that's why I mentioned the spot in the lineup. If you have better hitters around you, generally you'll see better pitches.
  15. That's well and good but that doesn't justify giving him more ABs. If Arcia is showing more potential and hitting better then he should get more ABs. If Doumit is comparable or a little better (as it looks) he should be getting ABs as well. So, unless Parm can make himself more valuable than the other two there is no justification for playing him more particularly when his defense is still iffy.
  16. We have some pretty low standards around here if that is enough to make us happy. This is a babystep forward for someone that should be taking full strides at this point. Not that I don't want the guy to be good, I'd love nothing more than to have him turn out to be a good OF but I can't get excited about what we've seen so far.
  17. The way things have gone with Willingham and Morneau this year is probably Terry Ryan's worst nightmare. Willingham is having one of the worst seasons of his caeer thus greatly reduced production for the Twins and also making him worthless for trade. Morneau is playing well enough to be useful but not well enough to get much on the trade market.
  18. I think the difference is Doumit is driving in runs. Not sure why or if it has to do with where they are in the lineup but that is the one advantage of playing Doumit.
  19. Last I heard (about 3 weeks ago) was that he was just getting ready to start throwing again after another setback. Any updates on that? Seems like a real shame for a guy with that sort of stuff to basically throw his arm off. This has to be about the last shot before the Twins part way with him, I would think.
  20. Sure, if we are using logic that's the way they should go but we all know that in baseball managers tend to give proven vets the benefit of the doubt. It is sort of like in boxing when they say you have to KO the champ. For a lesser player (on a career level) like Parm he'd probably have to out play those guys by good margin in order to get significant playing time. I'm not saying that's the right approach but it seems to be the way it works.
  21. Hopefully the Twins can get both of these games. Miami has one of the worst lineups in the league so our pitching should look good for two games.
  22. Right, and that's what makes me doubt Parm's ability to develop. I understand that most players are more comfortable when they know they are the starter, it's less pressure and it's easier to get a rythm at the plate. It's a tough situation, do yo just say "Heck with it" and start him for most every game over the next month and see what happens no matter how bad it is or do you play Doumit and Arcia more because you're getting more out of them right now? Tough call right there. One side says they are a rebuilding team and we need to find out what Parm can do so we can move forward at that position, on the other side you want to win games and score runs.
  23. I can agree with that. I don't care what level of baseball you have played but even when I played in High School I played better when I was the starter than when I wasn't. I assume for many players in the Majors it's the same. Though, the way things work in the league you sort have have to make the best of the time you get or you might not get that long stretch of playing time.
  24. Well, Parmelee has about the same number of ABs this year as he had last year and pretty similar stats. Maybe a slight improvement in stats so far this season but really nothing to get excited about. However, at this point I don't think there is anyone in the minors worth brining up in his place so they may as well let him play it out and see what happens. Plouffe, I'm actually OK with as far as progress at the plate goes. Defense is still terrible.
