  1. How about signing bonus? Incentives? Perks? Could that number flesh out a bit?
  2. If he rakes for a whole season (and I would expect him to do so) he can probably come back and sign an MLB contract for about 1-2M I would guess? On a poor/average team, you could do a lot worse than play him as your 1B, or platoon him there or in the OF. I honestly think he would hit .320 with some power in an MLB platoon.
  3. That lineup is middle of the MLB pack (~15th in runs scored). Want to put a case of beer on it?
  4. "Unwritten" rules are all pretty much BS, and this one is no exception. If I were in MLB I would lead the league in getting beaned because I'd lay down bunts during no hitters and blatantly steal signs every time I was on base. If I were a GM I'd employ a guy to breakdown film to crack other team's signs. The whole concept of unwritten rules is ridiculous. If you can't spell it out in the actual rules, then let the players do it or change the game. I didn't watch this series, but I think it's safe to say every team pretty much does a little sign stealing once in a while, right?
  5. One minute Kurt Suzuki was sitting comfortably on his couch watching some SportsCenter and surfing TwinsDaily for some news about his new team. The next, his face got redder and redder until his head exploded. No one knows why.
  6. Well if that's the case it is unfortunate; for him, for the Braves, and finally for the Twins. Sounds like "shoulder tendinitis" might be a euphemism if he is really that unlikely to recover fully. Rest and a cortisone shot can cure some pretty nasty tendinitis, so reading between the lines it sounds like he has some structural damage no one has yet mentioned.
  7. Two things: This makes me feel quite a bit better after all the negative things I have heard about his fastball. A guy with nice secondary offerings can afford to only throw 91-92 on his FB. It was the reports that he struggled to approach 90 that worried me. Which leads me to my next thought... Is it common for a pitcher to lose as much as 6! MPH on his fastball from some simple tendinitis? That seems like an awfully big drop. Assuming he can regain that 92mph velocity I see no reason he can't work his way up to a #3 caliber starter with his secondary offerings, right?
  8. Because that is how it has worked in 97% of all sports video games ever made.
  9. Definitely not a foregone conclusion that Parm's bat never catches up to MLB pitching. Might not be with us, but I wouldn't bet against him. Wouldn't be a tragedy to see him move on either, but he still has enough potential that I'd like to keep him around for a while.
  10. I have to agree with RB. I'm sure I didn't watch nearly as many games as you all did since I mostly listen on the radio, but the 20 or so times I did see him out in RF I was pretty happy with his overall play. Range isn't everything. I would rather have a savvy guy who plays the wall and corner well and who has an above average arm than a Revere type who gets to waaaay more balls but has to one-hop it to the cutoff man. IMO, Cuddy is a great comparison (both offensively and defensively) for Parm's ceiling.
  11. That hits the nail squarely on the head. Of the following players who could make a case for being in the opening day lineup: Worley, Deduno, Diamond, Albers, Hendricks, Hernandez, the guy who came over in the Morneau trade, Gibson, Meyer. The only two you worry about blocking are Gibson and Meyer, and I would bank on both of those guys getting some service time this year. No disrespect intended to any of the other guys, but they have not proven they are good enough to be part of a good rotation and you can only give someone so many chances (see: Hendricks, Liam). Give them another role, stash them in AAA if possible, or let them go and wish them success with another club.
  12. Don't confuse blind hope with astute observational conclusions. Hughes pitching better with TF as his home park is an astute observational conclusion. Kubel bouncing back to hit .300 and 30HR is blind hope. The rest seem somewhere in between. As long as a team doesn't make moves solely on the basis of blind hope, I'm happy to take a few fliers on past results if they are cheap. I like having hope.
  13. Either of our predictions are pretty likely. The SPers will be a whole lot better this coming year. If the BP holds steady teams will have a bunch of trouble scoring runs off us in 2014. I'll go a step further. If Arcia does well, Hicks puts it together, Plouffe figures it out and is steady, Dozier is the "new Dozier" and Pinto hits like we all hope he can over a season.... The Twins will win the Central. Write it down, I said it first.
  14. Meyer 2015 ERA - 3.11 Meyer 2016 ERA - 2.92 How's that for optimism?
  15. ERA Predictions for the coming year: Pelfrey - 3.87 Nolasco - 4.19 Hughes - 3.96 Correia - 4.56 5th Starter - 4.44 That will drop our team SP ERA over a point in one year.
  16. Please let's stop with the tears for Diamond, Worley, Deduno, Hendriks, Albers, et al. When they were 4/5ths of our rotation I was as upbeat, positive, and enthusiastic as possible, but the hard truth is that the way they pitched last year they would struggle to find a spot on almost any MLB roster. They are/were Twins so I loved them, but you don't field a winning team with sentimentality. To suggest the pitchers we brought in will perform near the level we saw last year is plain silly. Our team SP ERA will almost certainly drop a full point. If the BP stays strong we will pitch well as a team. We have one SP coming off the books per year for the next 4 years. That is awesome flexibility. Gibson will be given a spot when he is ready. Meyer will be given a spot when he is ready. In 3-4 years we could/will easily see the likes of Berrios, Gonsalves, Thorpe, and Stewert knocking on the door. Our BP should continue to be well stocked. We are set up for pitching success for the next half decade at least.
  17. All valid, non-trolling points. But I think a lot of fans tend to get hung up on the title of "Ace." In my opinion, a strong rotation headlined by a SP with a 3.5 ERA is enough to win in the playoffs. You don't have to have that superstar guy, with the gaudy 2.2 ERA and 11 SO/9. Garza or Meyer could be a good enough pitcher to fill that role for us.
  18. I am fairly certain that we'd lock him up long before his arbitration ran out if he was trending that good. Sano should be a Twin for at least a decade (3-4 years + early extension for 6-8 years). I'll take Pujols or Cabrera for the next decade over an ace in his prime any day of the week and twice on Sundays. When you factor in injury rates, performance decline, and just plain limited impact for a guy who only plays 1 in 5 games, the ROI in aces is just plain bad. Home grow your own or don't go fishing.
  19. I completely agree. But then he took a step back (to 2B) and figured out his offense. I firmly believe he could make the transition back to SS and be that much more valuable and productive.
  20. Except Dozier?
  21. I know this drum has been beaten to death, but it's not just SS that could be blocked with a Drew signing. Moving Dozier back to SS and letting Rosario play 2B is still very much an option. I say go all in on another SP, move Worley to the pen, and cut bait with Diamond (hope he catches on with another club). Deduno and Gibson fighting for your 5th SP position for a year until Correia's contract is up is not a bad thing. Meyer supplanting Deduno in 2015 is also not a bad thing.
  22. I liked Diamond in the pen until I looked at his splits. As much as I enjoyed his nice 2012 I really think he's gone. I look at it this way. There is a lot to like about Worley and Deduno. But would you rather have Worley or Garza? Would you rather have Deduno or Garza? Nolasco Hughes Gibson Correia Garza Take it a step further to next year: Garza Nolasco Meyer Hughes Gibson That is a playoff caliber rotation and we can have assembled it in less than 2 offseasons. Author's note: I have been an active hater of Matt Garza for some time now, as evidenced by my avatar of him in a dress. If he can move past my disdain then I can as well.
  23. By next year (2015) our outfield will likely consist of Buxton, Hicks, and Arcia/Pouffe/Parm/etc. We're spending "all this money" on contracts that run several years past that point. I agree adding an additional 1-2 year contract seems a poor choice, unless you want to establish a rapport with that player and extend him if/when he succeeds.
