  1. The Astros did just fine by themselves. It would be patently unfair to criticise their decision.
  2. Could be. They'll have to compete with some others for a top ten spot here at mid-season: Vargas, Tonkin, Minier, Jorge, Harrison, Walker, Hicks, Goodrum, Santana, and maybe a couple of others are going to get nice mid-season reviews. And Bard, Chargois, and Wimmers are off the radar screen because of injury and might come storming back like Kepler has. Just a few years ago, those slots were being filled by the likes of Hughes, Tosoni, and Gutierrez. Rather nice upgrade, woldn't you say?
  3. The best part about this list is that none of these guys ranks among our top ten prospects, although May is close.
  4. Yes. The average fan will attach very quickly to exciting new players. Frankly, the one thing that WILL keep fans from the park is the ticket prices, driven in large part by the free spending us rabid fans clamor for nonstop.
  5. Well put, Seth. The reason I haven't been more troubled by Ryan's failings in procuring #2-3 starters is that it's harder than some people think to find them with acceptable financial risks, and that we weren't going to contend in 2013 anyway. The way I see it, for the next two years, the only internal candidates that have any liklihood of delivering #2-3-4 starter results are Gibson, Meyer, Worley, Wimmers, and just maybe May, Eades, Hendriks, and Deduno. The odds of four of them panning out isn't so hot, which is why I'm hoping for at least one #2-3 from outside the system. Then I'll be fine taking our chances on the #5-6-7 staters coming from this group plus DeVries, Darnell, Baxendale, Hernandez, Blackburn and the like.
  6. Yeah, I'd take Xander Bogaerts for Perkins in a Boston nanosecond!
  7. Same here, although I'll hold out a modicum of hope that someone is interested in parting with a B- or even C+ prospect in exchange for a package of Mournsy, enough cash to cover his W2, and a C- prospect, of which we have oodles. We don't need to offload him to cut costs, or to make room for Parmelee and Collabello for three months during a .500 season, or to land a fringy C- prospect. He's worth more to the Twins for the remainder of the season than he is on a standalone basis to any other team, I'm afraid. So, if we can't "package" him, let's keep him.
  8. Good observations by thrylos and others. We have an abundance of 5-6-7 SP's from both sides. We all know that. We really need Gibson to be a 2-3, Worley to come around as a 3-4, Wimmers to come back as a 4-5.... And we need to go outside the system for a 2-3 or better, maybe two. This off-season, pretty please, Mr. Ryan?
  9. Bullpen Banter came outwith its mid-season Top 75 today too, with B&S at #1 and #7, and also #37 Stewart, #44 Meyer, #49 Berrios, and #53 Gibson. So 6 of the 75 are Twins, and Rosario and Kepler just missed, according to them. Some reasons to be encouraged about our chances to compete for the division in the near future: 1. The rest of the division placed a combined 8 prospects. 2. We placed 6 before CWS place thier sole prospect, #55 Hawkins. 3. Detroit placed only one: #29 Castellanos. 4. KCR: #30 Zimmer, #32 Mondesi, and #46 Ventura. 5. CLE: #5 Lindor, #34 Frazier, and #63 Paulino. 6. We just graduated Arcia and Hicks.
  10. Hope plenty of CR fans are savoring this season. That lineup, even without Buxton, is as good as it gets. A team OPS of .800 and .275+ BA? Wow.
  11. We've seen a ton of young players come up who are still a long way from reaching their projected ceilings. Some will dissappoint, but don't discount this last wave completely as not being "legit". All of these younger players have a chance to get better: Florimon, Parmelee, Dozier, Plouffe, Gibson, Pressly, Hicks, Escobar, Herrmann, Hendriks, Hernandez, Thielbar, Oliveros, Arcia, Worley, Diamond, and even Deduno. If enough of these guys improve, and the next wave, which is legit even in the minds of the most critical among us, comes through, this will be a contender perhaps by 2016.
  12. Who killed your dog anyway? Wow.
  13. Thanks for the chuckle, thrylos. Two years removed and a league away and yet you can still remain objective about Cuddy. I don't like Plouffe. He tweets too much. Oh, and don't destroy your opinion by looking, but Cuddy is pulling off an All-Star caliber, Gibsonly year. Although it's nothing compared to Plouffe.
  14. Did you copy Brad Steil on this memo? You know, those people are so clueless. It'll be a huge relief for them to get all your ideas. They certainly have not considered any of these options.
  15. Good point. I was ignorant enough this past winter to think that, through FA and maybe a trade, we'd find three pitchers who met or exceeded the "Diamond Standard", and I viewed Scott Diamond as a#3-4 starer on a contender, not the #2-3 guy he often was descried to be by other posters. That didn't happen, probably as a result of a combination of factors, including Ryan's failing to get it done, a weak pool, and some bad luck. I agree, I don't like relying on a FA pickup to plug such an important hole as a #2-3 starter, but what are the realistic choices for this team? We all want the quickst fix possible.
  16. Sorry, Nick, I didn't think it was necessary. His first sentence alone was cause for disbelief, but your points are elucidation enough.
  17. Starting earlier would've been one way to skin the cat, but do you believe today's results, from a W-L perspective, would be much different? I think they're ahead of the rebuilding curve. Well ahead actually. I could very easily be mistaken about this, because we won't know until we know. The jury is still out on Parmelee, Plouffe, Hicks, Dozier, Deduno, Hendriks, and a couple other guys. The next wave is still two years away from being a force, and we won't know who will dissappoint and who will come through among that group of Sano, Rosario, Gibson, Arcia, Buxton, Pinto, Wimmers, Berrios.... I'm optimistic. And patient. But, if Ryan fails to pull the trigger on a front-of-the-rotation starter next off-season, I'll be very disheartened. He didn't have viable options last winter, and the timing for making a big splash wasn't in place. Next winter is different.
  18. The Twins have signed Taiwanese prospects in the past. Not many, but at least a couple.
